A new project has been announced in the WetCanvas! project system!

Title: Pastel Retrospective 2004
Project Leader: sundiver
Relative Difficulty: Irrelevant
Type Restrictions: Any Type
Medium: Pastels
Subject: Not Applicable
Days open for signups: Always
Maximum participants allowed: Unlimited

Description:

The Pastel Retrospectives for 2002 and 2003 projects were a big success. (SEE LINKS IN PROJECT DESCRIPTION)

Another year has gone by, with new members coming on board, big changes to the forum itself with lots of lively discussion and experimenting and most important, lots and lots of pastel paintings.

It's time to select 1-3 pastel paintings that you did in 2004, soft pastel or oil pastel, and post them here so we can showcase the year. You may choose them because you like them, learned a lot doing them, or other reasons of your own.

Please comment a little bit on each one that you choose to share with us and also indicate whether it is soft pastel or oil pastel, size and material used.

Additional Information:

For more information on the project: Click here! (http://www.wetcanvas.com//Community/Projects/index.php?cmd=view_details&proj_id=811)

Remember, in order to help keep the discussions on projects organized, you should post your questions, suggestions, and comments on submitted work here in this thread. By doing this, we allow other non-project efforts to not get "pushed down" by a swarm of project-related threads.

Kat, thanks for posting this one again...it brings such a smile to my face. Here in CA, there is an ad campaign on the radio about how "contented cows" make good cheese. These are definitely contented cows! and I love the play of the black and white cows against the greens of the grass and the blue, blue sky.

Mikki....it has been a great year....if you look at my join date and post history you will see I was a lurker....learning, but not as much as when I started posting......Between wde, oil and pastel sketch threads, projects and the two forums, I probably did nearly 100 paintings in 2004.....(some have already made it to the county dump....lol) Ya'll have become my friends, teachers, cheer leaders, shoulders to cry on..well you get the idea.

now to decide...hmmmmm

Yay, Wendy--glad you started this project again--many thanks!! I saw some wonderful stuff there, and added my 3 cents worth to it. It was hard to decide which paintings to show, which is a good sign for me. It means I've been painting and I'm happy with my work, thanks to so much help from people hereabouts...

Okay Julie...this is it...no more whining about not being able to paint landscapes. I'd love to turn out a piece this well done. Everything is wonderful here. It's okay to prefer still life set ups, they are certainly more convenient to do from life. Did you know that Albert Handell says the french call still life paintings "dead landscapes"? Anyway, I bet this one would be snapped up fast at auction or from a gallery wall.

Kat, maybe the lack of yellow greens is a good thing...your grasses sing as being fresh with spring growth. When working in watercolor, I never use any greens from the tubes. I mix them all as I need them because they are more realistic. I have the complete Ludwig set of greens now as well as a full tray of greens from other makers and I still have trouble with greens looking natural. Maybe mixing on the paper is the right answer for fresh looking greens.

Oh Pat! I can't tell you how many times I've tried to paint morning glories like this. We used to have an arbor in our yard that was just covered with them all summer long and the colors just entranced me...but try as I might I was never able to capture them as you have. Beautiful work!

Thanks, Mikki and Kate. I do love morning glories and have been wanting to paint them for a long time. Preston's mini project got me going.

Both your animal portraits are wonderful - I love the alert expression on his face and the softness of the kitty's fur. Nice work!

Hello everyone, I jumped in here just a tad late sorry. This piece is titled Head & shoulders. It measures about 28 x 30. It's done with pastels. I must have been thinking or feeling that there were too many things on my mind at once. Sorry about the grainy appearance. :wave:http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/21-Jan-2005/53232-Feeling_disconnected__head_and_shoulders_002.jpg
