Well, I have posted replies on several threads here so I thought it best I now formally introduce myself.

My name is Jodie and I am a graphite portrait artist.. mostly children. I am virtually totally self taught (have taken those proverbial art perspective classes in high school and one in college) and have learned all I know from other art books and studying other artists work. My goddess of graphite drawing is Lee Hammond who has a series of books out on portrait drawing in both graphite and colored pencils. I am itching to make a transition into colored pencils but am working on an onslaught of commissions I got for Mothers Day and Fathers Day (what better gift on those days than drawings of their own children!).

I happened upon this site by accident while searching the web for all the websites I could find of other artists. WHAT A FIND! Unfortunately, I found it JUST as the website went down for a month! BOO HOO!! So glad it is back up now and look forward to sharing joys and concerns with you other fellow artists!!

Nice to meet you! I'm new as well and self-taught. Though I admit I've not read any drawing books, and I just got my first set of colored pencils this past Christmas.

I read somewhere in some encyclopedia that portraiture isn't just people?

I feel like I've wasted half my life in the dark, and I'm just now stumbling into light. I am sure to be a true pest with questions to satisfy my need to know. http://www.wetcanvas.com/ubb/smile.gif

Thank you for all the warm welcomes! Yes, I would like to post some of my artwork here but don't have a CLUE how to do it! My website will be back to functional within a week so I think I will just post that when it is ready again.

Loretta: My understanding that in art, portraiture refers to people. I cannot imagine what else it would include?

Hi Jodie: Your're right, Lee Hammond is the
goddess of graphite for portraits... I have
some of her books... but my favorite or God
of graphite's for portraits, still life,
animals and birds is Gene Franks, Walter
Foster Publishing... He also has books on
Mixed Media, and Drybrush Watercolor that
are very good... Gene Franks has a style unto himself, and he has been my mentor for
many years... I'm still trying to master
Lee Hammonds style...

I'm looking forward to seeing some of your work soon. Weclome to wetcanvas, I sure you
will enjoy it in all its many forums.
