OK, I'm in. Have always struggled with imaginary stuff, so should be an interesting challenge.

Do you think this type of work qualifies for this project? I still have one day to delete it from the Novembre ATC project.

Yes Anney, this lovely card would be right at home in the imagination ATC.

As I said in the November ATC, this new ATC-imagination is for flights of imagination, fantasy and abstraction.

Set your mind free.

The main thing is that this ATC project is not for copies of real life things (people, animals, nature) so that it is different to those ATC projects.

Now we can choose to put our cards in the thread that seems most appropriate for its genre.

Now I need to make some.... :p :p

I'm in.
Don't often do abstract - but does collage count as imagination/abstract?

I'll keep this project in mind when I do something really different. :wink2:

artbyjune
12-19-2004, 05:11 AM
Yes, codzoned, collage counts as imagination work...as long as the image doesn't primarily intend to copy reality.

i.e., the image should say something fantasy-related. Not just straight reporting.

Wacky is great!! Fanciful. Try something you've never considered before. :D

This is a great idea stumpy! With 90% of my art being created from my imagination and the other 10 % from (bad) photos I have taken, I will eventually make time to submit some more atc's here.
Thank you for taking the time and effort to start this up. BP

Just a thought for card-makers...think collage, do something Monty-pythonish.

Or how about those mix-and-match animal story books???
i.e., head of lion, body of elephant, legs of giraffe, etc.....

They might be translatable into ATCs.

Stumptailmonkey, thanks for creating this project. This has managed to inspire a couple of ideas in me. And the best thing about it is ... nothing has to look realistic. Whew. Hopefully more ideas will be rolling out shortly. :D

Colourful and striking image, Lisa.

Looks like one of those paintings used for meditation in Eastern religions/philosophies.

You seem to fall into the centre and then are pulled back out again by the lines.

My sympathy to anyone affected by this tragedy. Watching news coverage last night I wished that I wasn't so short of cash right now, because it looks like they need all the help they can get. maybe I can do a charity auction of one of my paintings on ebay and donate the proceeds?

Dropping watercolour onto wet paper is a good way of stimulating the imagination.

Kind of Rorsharch ink blot approach.

Tried and tested method...as you probably all know already....Leonardo da Vinci recommended looking at stains on tables and trying to see images in them in order to stimulate imagination.

One quick question before I get strated on this....

How heavy of a support would you recommend? I usually have watercolor or acrylic papers that is about 140lb. Would that be heavy enough for an ATC? Or, would it be better to have that mounted onto matboard or cardboard?

I have never done an ATC before but after browsing through these I am really excited about it!

Thanks for the help!

Hi Keith,
welcome to the wonderful world of ATCs-from imagination.

Glad to have you here.

For supports- watercolour paper of 140lbs is usually robust enough on its own. Just put your details: name of work, your name, materials used, maybe your email or website address- on the back.

However, if you feel you would like extra firmness, glue the watercolour paper to card stock.

Hope to trade with you. Looking forward to seeing your ATC's.

PM the artist whose ATC work you admire to request a trade!!

Cheers,

For newcomers...

To trade your card for another one you like in the ATC galleries, just PM the artist and request an exchange. Mention the particular card you wish to trade for and ask them to look at your gallery of ATCs to choose one of yours in exchange.

1 for 1 is the rule. But if you like an artist's work, why not do 3 for 3...saves postage.

Having secured the trade, you now exchange postal addresses ...also by PM.

That's about it!! Happy trading, all. :D :D

No worries, found the place and uploaded one card. Painted a few more yesterday and just waiting for them to dry propperly before I scan them in.

But another question please!:

1. What is the best way to pack/wrap them when sending?

2. What is the best way to store the cards? I dont want them to stick to something.

Thanks!

Hi Aboxofgifts, and welcome to the ATC projects.

Since the ATCs are the same size as trading cards, like Pokemon and other fantasy/sci fi trading cards, you can easily buy individual plastic sleeves for your own cards- to store them and for sending them protected through the post.

You can buy plastic files for ringbinders which store about 12 cards (I think) in one plastic sleeve (rather like slides-photographic- holder). This is great for storing your traded ATCs from other artists.

The plastic sleeves are quite cheap, and you can get them in games shops, toy stores and on the web.

Here's a link to a UK online supplier. There must be USA and other suppliers online.

trading sleeves supplies (http://www.uktradingcards.com/index.php)

To further protect cards in the post, lots of folk send them inside a greetings card or other card.

I'm very much looking forward to looking at your cards for trade.

By the way, you can trade across the different ATC projects.

Check them all out: Main ATC project which started this whole thing off;
Animal ATCs; people ATCs; nature ATCs and this one: Fantasy/imagination ATCs.

Cheers all.

Some more information.

Best to post via airmail internationally to make sure the trade takes place with a bit of immediacy.

If you don't have pokemon/games card sleeves, try using plastic food wrap to start off.

Daniela et al,
WELCOME to ATC's wetcanvas style!
So great to see new people and your exciting variety styles to trade with.
RE storage and posting, I have done quite a bit of mixed media pieces, and traded for some atc's that require careful storage.

To post I have found basic white gift wrap tissure paper best, with a bubble wrap or slightly rigid eg. cardstock surround fine. It is a good idea to enclose the padded atc in waterproof material like food wrap or cellophane etc also as some postal addresses get a bit wet enroute.

Re storage and display, I use polypropylene sleeves, which look like your usual clear plastic stuff, but are non acidic and non sticky. So archival quality and will preserve even delicate stuff like encaustic atc's (heat sealed pigmented wax). It costs a little more, but some of the atc's have had such a lot of time and care put into them, that I consider it worthwhile.
I want to be able to continue to enjoy them when I am old and grey.
Hope that helps.

I agree, and would like to add -from experience, that the best glue for ease of application and non acidity, is PVA or a spray fixative. PVA being the least likely to cause separation between layers.

I love your series of the 'cross'. This one is the most mystical in feeling, I think. I like the more geometric ones as well, so striking. Maybe we could trade? I need to upload some new ATCs soon, so wait for that if you're not keen on the ones I have posted at the moment.

Hi all,
have you posted in the new miniatures forum yet?

To get the imagination flowing, for the ATCs, why not do some of the following:

1. scribble and then look at the eresult and see if it suggests an image
2. do a mini abstract - feelings from a piece of music
3. suggest an emotion
4. use a medium new to you
5. use the images from the WDE or image library to spark off an imaginative journey.

I also thought we could have a monthly challenge to help get the imagination ATCs going.

Each artist could take it in turn to suggest a topic, theme, issue, medium, etc.

Then you could use that prompt to work from and post your results.

I will start it off:

My idea for the rest of January is this:

1. outlines.

Treat it any way you want......

Good idea, Stump! You gonna sign up someone for each month or just pass the baton month by month? (Maybe whoever has idea for this month can tap someone to be responsible for the next month's inspiration.) This is getting more fun all the time!

Hmmmmmm..... outlines..... Gotta go find some paper.

No cartooning at all. Just googly eyes and such. I find it relaxing when I want to draw but don't want to concentrate on composition and shading bla bla bla. :wink2:

Since this is the Imagination project, how about an imaginary self portrait? If you could be anything besides what you are, what would that be? An astronaut? A sports superstar? An animal?

I thought this might be kind of fun since there really is no boundaries here. :D

Avie, with my ATCs I do the watercolour first and then do the ink lines over the top. Waterproof ink in a sketching pen, not pen and nib style.

I've done ink under colour before and it blurs which can be a nice effect too!!

Did I tell you I got the sparrow embroidery card you sent recently?? I just LOVE it. How do you print onto material? I've never done that.

Hummm, I think I am going to have to go to the art supply store and experiment a little. I have such a fear of color...

Oh, the sparrow! Isn't she just the sweetest of the little birds? I print onto fabric by ironing a piece of freezer paper to the back of white fabric, this stablizes it for the printer. I trim down the edges of the fabric neatly and then up the settings on my printer to use heavy ink and a long drying time. If you don't do that the picture will come out faded looking. Just a lot of trial and error if you know what I mean! After the printing I just peel off the paper and embroider.

Can't wait to see what everyone comes up with!

Well, I didn't realize there were 2 threads for art cards going. Maybe I placed mine in the wrong thread .... so I'll put them here too, since they're more contemporary with a whimsical twist.

2 from the 'motherhood' series, and 2 from the 'floating' series.

OKay.
Here is March's theme challenge: (Fish PMed me also)

MOOD COLOUR/S
----------------
Let's see if you can suggest a mood with your use of colour and texture.
You can use a textured / canvas etc atc size background and paint, bead or use mixed media.
The idea is to think BEYOND just using blue for 'feeling blue' and do something interesting like "feelin sexy" or "back seat driver" or "contemplative" etc.
Go for it.

( And this time I will get something done also. The previous themes have been great but I have been too tired to put in a decent submission. My apologies)

Okay.
Here are the two I am working on, you are welcome to interpret these in your fascinating unique way :

MORTALITY
CHERISH

I would like to dedicate these ideas to Avie, in memory of her dad.

On a lighter note, although probably one you can get hot under the collar about just reading it, what about trying

BACK SEAT DRIVER

It makes me think of texture and bright colours (and thumping somebody).

Maybe we could extend the mood idea for another month...it seems to have a LOT of scope for inspiring cards.

Hey Guys Im all signed up!

Mind if I jump in stumpy?

Im a sloooooooooooooooooow ATC maker as yall know; and i've been trying to acumulate some darn cards to trade so that I have a good stock to play with.

I have a wee question. I do allot of things from imagination but I don't really do much in the way of abstract work and on ocassion I mix the imagination with memory. And I was wondering if that would be acceptable?

Im still acumulating before I post them but I recently made a card that would be on the lines of fantasy that would be apropriate for this site but it is imagination/with memory from these awsome black flowers I saw. The flowers are the head dress of what I like to call the black pearl sisters. Thats why im asking if it fits in line with the theme :D

Hi Morganna. Welcome to this little branch of the ATC tree!! Glad to have you with us. Looking forward to your ATCs from imaginaton.

'From imagination' in my book means ...composed out of your mind with no direct copying of reality.

So, of course that means from memory is just fine!!

Realistic treatment is fine too, e.g., in a surrealist way.

Or .....as long as its not fundamentally a copy-type of work.

In fact, the label is pretty OPEN really. I want people to have lots of fun and experiment!! The place to be zany or wild or try out imagery and techniques.

Don't know what do do with them?

Exchange them here (http://groups.msn.com/ATCSecondGenerationForwardTrades) with other ATC entusiasts. This is an MSN group dedicated to shareing Second Generation / Forward trading ATC's only.

First or new cards are to be traded on Wetcanvas or other ATC trading groups.

Fosker if you want to know how to make Avatars there is a good lot of help here at WC with that little croc fellow. I also think there is a project too. Anyway if you need help and cannot find it we will help you out.

Even if you PM me with your pict that you want to make into an avatar I could adjust it for you and PM you back with it the right size till you know how to do it.

An Avatar is not important however. What is important is that you have heaps of fun on WC and learn heaps. I know I do.....

Hi guys...so its now the month of MAY. Time for a change of theme for the ATC's.

I thought we could try ATCs on the theme:
.....'in your dreams'................

You could tackle it by painting/drawing/collaging images from actual sleep-time dreaming. Or it could be along the lines of wished-for-dreams. Up to you.

As a bit of a twist, you could try incorporating words into the ATC.

looking forward to seeing all the dream imagery!! ;)

For this month's theme (JUNE), try working on creating an imaginary underwater world, or create a fantabulous never-seen-before flower, or insect. Use a medium new to you. Or use collage.

Have a great weekend all!!
