View Full Version : WetCanvas! Art Supply Store Proposition

Hi gang!

As many of you know, we run the ads at the top of all of our pages in an effort to help offset the tremendous cost in running the largest community for artists on the Internet. Of course, as you also know, many of these ads are untargeted, blatent interruptions to your experience here.

Sooooo, we have a proposition to make. As always, you have a chance to shape the direction of WetCanvas!, and help make it an even more useful resource for folks.

The proposition? If we got rid of the ads, and opened an online art supply store, would you use it? We are investigating the opportunity to do this, but obviously, we want to make sure that the service would be useful to everyone. Due to the time and monetary effort required to bring an online store like that up and running, we'd obviously need a pretty hefty outpouring of support from you guys in order to make it fly.

Comments?

Cheers.
Scott

Well, I have questions. Who would supply the Art store or would it just be Ads from various other Art Stores. Would the prices be lower, competitive or higher than other art stores?
I do think it would be a good idea. It would be of more interest to us than the ordinary ads.
I'd like to say I'd support it but I tend to just run down to my local art store more than anything else. I'm not a big mail order or online buyer, but then I'm not everybody.
I would buy from it if I could.

Good question, Tammy. We have a number of partnerships in place that will allow us to run the store ourselves - this would not simply be ads from other stores.

Yes, prices would be discounted.

Cheers.

Scott,

If they have what I need and the price is competitive, of course I would buy here first in order to support WC.

I'd buy it here first to support WC too...
... but, I don't have many art supplies that I could actually buy online. Or rather, you're not likely to carry the supplies I need (archival inkjet ink? gold wire? scalpel blades?).

Even so if there is an online shop and I could figure out something to buy from it, I would.

Scott, I also think you should have a "tip jar" for donations. You know a lot of people here are SO happy with the support you've given us, above and beyond what could be expected from any other site. So, give us a chance to just plain GIVE you money. http://www.wetcanvas.com/ubb/smile.gif I'd buy $20 of random, unneeded art supplies if it supported WC... but you'd only get what, $5 of that? I'd rather just give you $5 (or $20 even), myself.

Scott,

Why not make a special membership like museums have? (No one would be excluded from the site and membership would be completely optional...)

$100 DONATION family membership
$50 DONATION individual membership
$25 DONATION student membership

Benefits of membership could include:
*you did the right thing pat on the back
*a wet canvas t-shirt, mug or cap
*wet canvas calendar (could easily be made up and sent via email) with members works

I'd donate too!

I'd be interested if you have mi-teintes paper and other supplies I use. Sure I'd be happy to support you.

Hi Scott. I buy all my supplies online, so this idea would be great and I could support my favorite place too. I like the idea of memberships too, maybe call them Gold, Silver and Bronze though. Also the VIP type memberships like MisterArt has is a good idea too. Thanks, Sandy

Scott,

If prices were competitive I would certainly buy here in order to support my favourite site, but, would there be problems shipping to UK.
I know my husband buys motorcycle parts from the US and has taxes to pay when they arrive here.

I buy most of my supplies on-line anyway so I would be happy to support WC in that way. Great idea, Scott!

Scott, this is a good idea. I would certainly support it providing the product costs and shipping costs were competitive. Think that would be the key factor for most of us...as well as stocking those unusual items that have already been mentioned.
Bring it on !!! http://www.wetcanvas.com/ubb/smile.gif http://www.wetcanvas.com/ubb/smile.gif Carol

Scott,
That is a great idea. Don't leave out framing either. I buy all my art supplies and frames online.

I would buy from WetCanvas just to keep the monkey off the site!!!!

This is a great idea...personally I shop online for almost all of my supplies now.

I like the idea of free shipping with orders of ...say...a $100 or more!

Scott, sounds good to me, I buy most of my stuff through catalogs. I liked some of the feedback given too; especially the free shipping http://www.wetcanvas.com/ubb/smile.gif

By the way, isn't this like pushing drugs
to junkies? http://www.wetcanvas.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Scott,

I would buy from the art store to support WC. I do not have a good local art store where I am at. Question would it be like Dick Blick or like that? I have to travel about hour to get there and if I could buy online from WC I would do that. I think it is a great idea. We also have a lot people online that could help with question about some supplies.. I know I am no expert and sometimes when I go to art store I like some help picking out stuff I need...

Great Idea two thumbs up for this .. also I do not like some of the banner ads... to flashy ... sorry

While you are at it Scott....see if you can partner with a discount framing company. Many artists order their frames from such.

Arlene - just to confirm, several of our partners/distributors carry the full Canson line of papers, including the mi-teintes. :-)

Scott,

I would support WC's art supply store if the prices are competitive and shipping isn't outrageous. Would like to see a variety of products that aren't out of stock. It is really annoying when you order from the brand new catalog and you have to wait 3 months because they are out of stock!

Oh, please tell me you would sell Maiemeri's acrylics?? And their Polyvinyl one's too. I use the latter for my tiles!! Fingers' crossed...wishing...wishing!

Warmth,
ReNae
