I just didn't like the other one that I showed you all earlier so I just started a new one. Thread to the other one. www.wetcanvas.com/ubb/Forum6/HTML/000063.html (http://www.wetcanvas.com/ubb/Forum6/HTML/000063.html)
Since scanning the painting, I already see alot of problems, especially the eyes are not the same.
What else can ya'll tell me that you see?
Is it any improvement over the other one?

Yes, here's the photo. I've been working on him a long time and quite frankly I'm tired of it and I'm going back to landscapes.
I use yellow ochra, light red, white, brunt senna and raw umbra.

well this was a tough exercise you gave yourself!! http://www.wetcanvas.com/ubb/smile.gif and what a cute little face http://www.wetcanvas.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
one trick is to mix the colors on the palette JUST as you want them to be on the painting-------->before you touch that paint to the canvas..this way you are not trying to mix them on the canvas...
i know you put a lot of time and effort in to this and am sure that was a good study for you, even if you are not completely happy with the results
back to landscapes..eh'
keep on painting!!

It seems the colors in your second post are much different than the first, an orange shirt vs a reddish one as an example. I'm assuming this is due to the scan? There is some progress here, but sometimes it is easy to focus on a tree and miss the forest. I think your are still trying to paint what you think you see vs what you see.
If you like painting people and want to learn to do them with increasing accuracy, stick with it and don't give up. Drawing skills are a must in this realm. Of course do your other work as you are tackling this new area. This will help keep the frustration factor in check as you develop, people are really hard to do.
Have you read the book "Drawing on the right side of the brain"? There are many exercises in there than can help you with some of the difficulties you are experiencing. See some of the before and after's in there regarding portraits, they are quite amazing. The key is to be disciplined and try to take it little by little, rather than trying to tackle all of it at once. You can learn to do this better, but if you don't try for sure it won't happen.
How about those exercises dj* and I were suggesting regarding the "posterize" function in an imaging program? Did you have any luck with that?
If you really want to improve at this, please don't give up and have compassion for your developmental process. Just realize it takes time.
