A new project has been announced in the WetCanvas! project system!

Title: WATER DISTORTION
Project Leader: rapolina
Relative Difficulty: Irrelevant
Type Restrictions: Painting
Medium: Watercolor paints
Subject: Not Applicable
Days open for signups: Always
Maximum participants allowed: Unlimited

Description:

The underwater world is suggestive and stunning, full of wonderful blues, reds and other colors. Everything loses its shape and becomes charming.
Paint sea life, coral reef, swimming fishes, waves and anything else that can be under any water.

You can paint both realistic and abstract painting ... whatever you can imagine!

Hope you can have fun and discover a new, fascinating subject!

You can look at this statue that is under the sea near Genova, in Italy. Many references can also be pictures taken at the seaside, or of a coral reef.

Additional Information:

For more information on the project: Click here! (http://www.wetcanvas.com//Community/Projects/index.php?cmd=view_details&proj_id=798)

Remember, in order to help keep the discussions on projects organized, you should post your questions, suggestions, and comments on submitted work here in this thread. By doing this, we allow other non-project efforts to not get "pushed down" by a swarm of project-related threads.

The delicate plankton or kelp or whatever is nicely silhouetted against the blue of the sea. This is a beautiful design. It would be lovely on silk or on anything, for that matter!

thank you Kat!
as soon as i can i'll post the way i did it, that is the same I use for undersea scenes, very relaxing and funny.
in few words, i lay a multicolor pale background, then frisket and other colors over on dump paper, more frisket and so on, darkening some parts of the painting and using a lot of water. Then i keep off the frisket and correct the white/pale colors if necessary.
i'll try to take some pics from the next one!

thank for the new entry, very beautiful all!

Hi Dave! I like the way you've captured your printmaker soul and put it into watercolour - the rhythm and symmetry here is beautiful and works well with the monochrome.

These are: 1) wonderful, well executed and painterly, and; 2) paintings that I could hang and not tire of.

Good job!

I am fortunate to live in a Sub-tropical climate, South Florida, where the warm Gulf Stream waters flow. I have been painting tropical fish for about 2 years now, I just love their colors, and how the refracted light reflrects off of them. I have recently started using a powder pigment that I mix into my piaints for the fish called, "Interference". This give my fish a shimmering effect when your veiw changes. I realized why my paintings missed that "life" like quality while I was snorkeling on a reef. The best way to see how the underwater world looks is to see it in person. Reference Photos just don't capture that ultimate look. I know most of you don't have this luxury, but I have found another way to see it, go to a good pet store where they have large aquariums of saltwater fish and study what you see and you will understand what I mean about that "Shimmer" I mentioned. It is so awsome!

It is kind of on the small side- 4 x 6 inches.

This is the first time I have tried a painting like this. I didnt start out with the intention of doing it this way, but it seems to work well... I LOVE the impressionist paintings, and was trying to kind of capture that feeling in this painting.

I started out with a couple of weak washes, like any watercolor painting. I wasn't happy at all with the colors, though- The sea has SO much color to it- and the washes were, well, flat. Boring. I was ready to throw it away, but I tried the stippling- And I liked it!!
