I just had the 2000 Smithsonian calendar and the December picture is Thayer's "The Stevenson Memorial"! I saved it and I am going to frame it.Its very beautiful. I know this is probably an oil painting forum question but.....I was looking at the wings on that angel and I was wondering if they are a really good example of underpainting. I feel sorta funny saying that about such a lovely picture, but I feel that I could use them as a guide for my work, especially since I really do feel that I am usually winging http://www.wetcanvas.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif it anyway.

i'm not familiar with the work. an underpainting is the tone/color laid down as a base over which to paint....{M}

This is the Stevenson Memorial that I was talking about. I should have posted it along with my comment. He left the wings unfinished which seems to me to be very daring.The rock the angel is sitting on is supposed to symbolize the mountains where Robert Louis Stevenson was buried and I first thought that the unfinished wings aluded to Stevensons short life, but apparently Thayer routinely left parts on his paintings in a unfinished state.

chris...they look finished to me. the wings look evolved. he may be focusing the light on the figure.

underpainting is just an initial wash of color to paint over....{M}

I wasn't familiar with him until my brother bought a Thayer print for me at the Smithsonian. He has amazing work. I would love to see his work in person.
