View Full Version : Auctions at Yahoo

I'm expanding in more ways than thru the hips! :D

I've ventured into the Auction arena at Yahoo.com. If you'd like to check out my auctions, they are at

I got my same user ID!! so I can stay carlyart on both sites. I did notice that the description area for the auctions does not support all the html that I wanted to use...not sure why yet. I'll have to play around with it some to find out how to get all my images to show. It worked fine for the but not for the .

At Yahoo, you can link to your website and to other sites in the description. I even told folks that I have auctions at ebay! Will let you know how they turn out.

Listing fees were much less too!

I've been looking at Yahoo also, then I happen into auction message boards. Not a good thing to do all the time I don't think!
Unfortunately, you hear all the bad things. I heard there seems to be more deadbeat bidders there. (Just repeating what I read!)
Lots of folks as we know love Paypal, that is until I sign up and then a person hears all the bad stuff! Ekkkk. I keep reminding myself just how many thousands of people use the auctions and pay options. Surely the good experiences out weigh the bad. At least I hope so. I did notice that it seems that there is another ebsq artist on Yahoo who seems to do quite well there. Watch out, Carly..I may be following you there!

Good luck Carly. I'll be interested in finding out how you make out.

I heard once that more people share bad news than good! People without a complaint don't frequent message boards very often. Unless they are like me and just read everything for the sake of reading!!!

Yahoo is working to upgrade their site and to attract new sellers with their lower listing rates. With all the discomfort at ebay over the checkout thing! I think they will be getting some new sellers. This will help to upgrade the quality of buyers, too.

Hey Carly, Tammy and Suzette,
Carly your yahoo looks good; I really like both pieces!

Did you set up a link to that www.feedbacksite.com

you register there and they will pull your feedbackfrom all sites and keep all together on their site.

You can put their link in you yahoo auctions and bidders can click to see your feedback totals from ebay! That was neat, something I found in the ebay forums today.

Did you tell your customers to check out yahoo?

Who knows? I may just list something over there and got to keep my id too. Good luck with your auctions there. I scan their art pages by pix from time to time; sometimes there are a couple of really high bids on things not so special, go figure.

Give us an update on how these auctions go! Good luck!

Okay, I'm on yahoo now. I put up 1 painting for a 7 day auction and I already have 1 bid on it with 5+ days to go. And...its a painting that I listed twice on eBay with no bids at all. Yea!
Maybe we're on to something here. :)

11-13-2001, 12:53 AM
Oh, my id on Yahoo is tmermaid because I've had a Yahoo account for a long time (even before I used eBay)and that's what its always been. I post on their auction message boards as justsittingaround2 (my eBay ID)though.

11-13-2001, 01:07 AM
Tammy, I have another yahoo ID too. I just registered and got a new one for the auctions. I was really glad I got CARLYART!

11-13-2001, 01:11 AM
It wouldn't let me do that. Maybe because I was already signed in with my other id when I registered for the auctions? I dunno know. But that's cool.

WTG!! =) I'm checking into Yahooing as well. My brother recently posted an excercise bence on Ebay and received two bid for $50 and $51, neither meeting his reserve. So he reposted on Yahoo, has 8 days left and already has a bid of $350!! I don't know if Ebay is going down hill or what, but I'm planning on trying both for a while.

11-13-2001, 06:14 PM
Oh! I forgot. Tammy, did you just go with the 10 gallery fee, or did you bid higher. TIA!

11-13-2001, 07:49 PM
Congrats Tammy! Great going!

Have you set up a web page at geocities to link to your auctions?
I've been reading on the boards at hoo trying to figure all the stuff I need to do before listing.

I also need to study some of the ads; seems they are shorther than at ebay.

I had the same problem trying to sign in; already was set up on the hoo wallet as getsumart. A guy on the boards told me to sign out, then sign back in and register for the new auction ID. I was able to get artchick48 again.

I do believe a good number have left ebay for good. I will keep listing, 2 now on 'bay, I may split the series and put 1 or 2 at hoo to see how they might do. Yahoo is advertising big, I've read on the boards to try and pull in sellers.

Did you girls notify your bidders at ebay to check in on your auctions at yahoo?

Good luck to all of you! ( and me soon too! LOL )

I searched for you under Art, tmermaid but nothing came up; I found Carly's. Did you list in another category?

And does anyone know if yahoo erases their discussion board like weekly? There were a lot of postings there with granny and tonight there were about 9 all dated today.

Can you use paypal there? Billpoint?

How does Yahoo collect their fees?

I have also done a VERY STUPID thing on EBAY. I have a lot of faith in people and I'm hoping it will work out ok. I had a lady that bid on 2 paintings, I waived the ship fee on the smallest one since they were shipped together. She had excellent feedback, hundreds. She paid with an e check thru billpoint. Billpoint said DON'T ship before echeck clears. Well I went ahead and did ship them BEFORE the e check cleared and left her FB, positive, mailed the paintings, she has the paintings and she left me glowing FB. This lady has been really nicec emailing me about everyday, sending a pix of each of her kitties, just to show.

Today, I received a notice from billpoint that her e check failed to clear. I sent her an email with a copy and asked her to resubmit a payment or pay with a credit card or money order. She did email me right back, very apologetic, saying that she would check on the echeck, that once before she had keyed in wrong numbers on her check acct number. I've been expecting an email from billpoint this evening but haven't received one yet. Hopefully I will hear from her. IF she never makes good on the payment, I can use the FB followup to state the echeck failed and payment was never made BUT is there anything else that I could do to her, like report her to ebay? If I hadn't shipped the paintings, and then she hadn't paid I could file a NPB report and get my fees back from ebay and relist the paintings. SHE IS ALSO THE CURRENT HIGH BIDDER ON ANOTHER PAINTING RIGHT NOW. If she doesn't clear this up before the other painting ends, should I be mean and cancel her bid OR still give her the benefit of the doubt and wait to see if she pays. I won't ship this one until she pays! Boy have I learned my lesson. She is such a nice lady, it is hard for me to believe that she wouldn't make this $ good.

Have any of you had a similar problem with someone who had excellent FB? This was the first time anyone has used an echeck to pay.

I did go to the billpoint board and found out there is a prob with echecks failing but one guy told me that the ones that fail due to the bug, fail within minutes and that ones that fail after several days are due most times to non sufficient funds or some other reason.

Hey girls, me again.

I also wanted to know if you all are setting up and Auction Booth at yahoo? And have you signed up for the yahoo payment service?

KJ! Welcome to WC!, ebay and yahoo fever. :)

Thanks for all your tips Carly, Tammy, Lee, Tina, everybody. I've been slowly learning through lurking. I ventured into ebay a few days ago, BEFORE I read this thread about ebay being bad right now, and I will go sign up with Yahoo for sure.

One question. Should I use skirkart over yahoo too, or should I go with just my name?

Does anyone use one name for their more serious art and another name for their fun art?

Sorry to hear about your paintings Lee. I sure hope you recieve your check!! Thanks for the alert!

BTW, here's a link to my FIRST 3 for sale at Ebay. Any and all critiques on how/what to do different would be ever so appreciated.

I listed: art/painting/contemporary/skirkart
should I have listed with the art/painting/self promoters/skirkart or perhaps s.kirk or sandi kirk instead of skirkart?

:::nervously awaiting approval, but hoping for tips as well::::

11-13-2001, 11:39 PM
Hi Sandi!!!

LoL Sandi is the little bird that told me about your thread here. =) I've been meaning to get tuned in to WC for a while now. This thread was just the draw I needed. (yeah, like I need a reason to spend more time online. ROTFLOL)

Here is my auction Lee

I tried to get a new Yahoo id but they would not let me link it to my cc because my other id was linked to it and its the only one I have! Now what do I do?

11-14-2001, 12:36 AM
At the top of the message boards there is a line that says something like...Internet....Yahoo Auctions. If you click on Yahoo Auctions it will bring up all of the Topics on the board. You will find granny there!. Every time I get lost on the board I just click that link and start all over LOL

11-14-2001, 09:19 AM
Hi Sandi!

I really enjoyed seeing your pastel landscapes! They are really beautiful. I had no idea that you could use pastels and watercolor. Thanks for posting the link.

If I were you I would list all of your work, regardless of subject, under the same id and I would try and keep the same id at yahoo if possible.

The lady emailed me right back that she would check into what went wrong with her e check. I asked that she make another payment, perhaps by credit card or money order. I have not received any confirmation from billpoint that she has attempted payment again by echeck or any other means. Gosh, I hate that because I'll have to email her again. I don't like how I'm feeling BUT it is a good lesson to learn NEVER SHIP YOUR PAINTINGS UNTIL PAYMENT IS CONFIRMED. Some sellers even with credit card payments, don't ship until the $ is deposited. But after reading the billpoint board, even credit card payments can be chargedback. Who knows? Maybe it's best to require payment by money order or certified check.

I still don't know what to do about the other auction she is high bidder on. Maybe I will just let it run out, then just hold off shipping till she pays for all 3, giving her plenty of time to make good her first e check. Then, I'll follow the rules and file a nonpaybidder report to ebay on all 3; could at least get my relisting fees back or I could offer it to the next highest bidder. I may hereafter just not accept echecks. It seemed funny to me, because when someone pays via credit card at billpoint, in my billpoint account, it will show the date that the payment will be deposited to my checking account. However, on this lady's e check, there was no anticipated deposit date stated in my billpoint account; I found that odd.

Tammy: I did finally find your piece by entering your name into the search box at yahoo!

:::gleefully waving::::: Hi KJ!!! tweet tweet. :) lol

Lee, Thank you so much!! I really appreciate your nice comments more than you'll ever know. *sigh*

I'll keep same ID, thanks!

:::keeping fingers crossed the lady pays up TODAY, to end all stress, worry & confusion:::::

11-14-2001, 02:05 PM
Hi Lee, sorry to hear about your troubles with this lady. I don't think I would even let her bid until she makes good. And I would report her to Ebay for sure. But your are right, that was a mistake to ship before payment cleared. Oh well, that's how we learn, don't we, from our mistakes.

11-14-2001, 06:26 PM
Thanks Tammy! I'll try to find that link to find granny!

Thanks Sandy! Crossed fingers are good.

Thanks Suzette! That same lady has bid on the one I just listed; so now aside from the 2 she owes me, she has bids on 2 more. My hubby says I worry too much that she wouldn't bid KNOWING she can't pay! I said Hello!, hubby, if you were dishonest and some ding dong shipped you 2 paintings before payment was confirmed, wouldn't you order some more? I HOPE this lady isn't like that, but the next 2 won't ship until all 4 are paid. She has 139 fb, I believe there was a problem with one fb but 1 doesn't really worry me. If I haven't heard from her tonight, I'm going to email her again. Billpoint is having problems with their system, no doubt related to their changing over to the checkout and ebaypayments.

But did you know, you shouldn't ship anything even if a credit card buy until it is deposited to your account; but seasoned sellers on the boards say it's safe.

Do you know what kind of problems they are having? I posted my first auction of a sweater. This is my trial run before I start posting my work. It sold friday and I updated the checkout details which, they said, generated an invoice. The buyer has put in her shipping address and it looks as though she may have put in her CC for payment. However, when I go to my billpoint summary, I see nothing there. The invoice that was sent is not even showing. I emailed them, they responded answering a question that I didn't even ask and said that they buyer hadn't paid yet. I had asked why the invoice wasn't showing. They said that they forwarded my question to a supervisor and I'm waiting for their reply.

Anyhoo, as this is my first go-round, I really don't know what is SUPPOSED to happen. Does nothing show up until it's paid? Is it just perhaps delayed due to the bank holiday on Monday? Wouldn't if show if she tried to pay and it didn't clear? I dunno. I don't like holding up the shipping for the buyer. I hope it doesn't create a problem.

11-14-2001, 08:33 PM
With the problems that checkout is having, I'd email a buyer directly and be sure about what they are doing! They may be receiving insufficient information from ebay to finish paying also. If they stated that the buyer was paying by credit card...they may want to use PayPal...or think that you offer another method of payment.

I like the changes made with checkout, but I don't think all the bugs are worked out yet.

Lee, I wanted to see how things go at Yahoo before I invite my clients to go there for the auctions. I didn't sign up for the yahoo payment thingy..I'd rather offer just PayPal as an online method of payment (no chargebacks with PayPal!)

I'd email that lady and tell her that I noticed that she has bid on two more of my paintings and would like to clear up the problem with the e-check before those auctions close. That trusting in her feedback and responses to your emails, you shipped your first paintings in good faith. However, under the circumstances, you would like to see a payment made for those paintings prior to any further sales.

(let us know how it turns out!)

Hi girls!

kjsspot: There are LOTS of problems right now going on with billpoint. Anytime I have a problem with any payment service, I go right to ebay's discussion boards for that topic. That is the best place to go. Also, if Billpoint people review the boards and will answer if you direct a topic line to them.

Sure, enough many are having trouble with bp's e checks failing; also $ not recording to bp accounts as paid, also credit cards being charged multiple times for the same auction! I have had no payment problems prior, BUT next listing I'm going back to paypal and not offering BP till things straighten out.

Carly thanks for the advice, this lady usually emails me around 5:30, very chatty and pleasant, that's why I don't want to crack too hard on her, but I do need to be firm. Last night she said she would check on the bp e check problem. I thought she would email right back last night but she did not and has not emailed me all day or tonight BUT at 9:30 this am she bid on my other listing! I waited till 8:30 tonight to email her again. I told her that BP had told me that they have problems right now and a BP advisor said I should resend her an invoice to try again with an echeck. I told her I did not think that would be good and told her she could do a credit card payment to me thru paypal; last night I told her I accept money orders as well. If I have no response from her by tomorrow evening, I'm going to use your advice Carly, that sounded firm but reasonable.

Hi all,

I'd like to get signed up to try a few things over at Yahoo... can someone post a link for where to go to do that (pretty please?)

Lee, I hope you get this situation sorted out with this lady... maybe it's just a screw up, and it will all work out. Will keep my fingers crossed for you....
