Pastelist, if you have any links to works online by Georgia OKeefe, you can post them here. Some members may not be familiar with her work.

Just a reminder to everyone, painting in the style of is not copying someone's work :) We have a lot of great reference images in the library that would make wonderful "close-focus" subjects.

Thanks,
carly

I've signed up too - I have a photo that will be just perfect for this. May try to do one in soft and one in oil pastels - might be interesting to see the differences - :D

I've signed up. Hadn't heard of Georgia O'Keefe until I did a close up of an orchid for the WDE some time back and several people very kindly said it reminded them of O'Keefe, so I really have to have a go at this one.

This is a cornflower that's blooming out-of-season in a flower pot outside my studio window :) so I decided to use it for my subject. It's on watercolor paper underpainted with the orange Createx Pure Pigment. The digital picked up the strokes of oil pastel over the underpainting nicely but in real life, this still looks orange all over!

Will be interesting to see if I can maintain the abstract shape while I add the color to distinguish the petal shapes. Now I'm off to do some blending :) See ya later!

This turned out lovely. The softness of the petals and the energy and boldness of the inner flower. Also has that abstract feel that Georgia O'Keefe showed in her paintings of flowers.

Watergirl,
this could be a watercolor with the flowing lines softly blending together. Wonderful abstract quality, too. I didn't do as well in capturing that feel as you did. I'll have to try another one using the softies :)

No problem, Preston :) It's a reference to the painting by the Belgian surealist painter Rene Magritte.
One of his paintings shows a pipe with written underneath 'Ceci n'est pas une pipe' (This is not a pipe).

http://www.mandalivia.com/talk/archives/000377.php

;) Of course, he was right you can't smoke this pipe, so it's not a pipe - it's an illustration of a pipe...

Hope this helps!

Wow, the florals are all gorgeous, and very reminiscent of the O'Keefes I've seen in terms of the almost abstract quality of the close-ups! very impressive!

Steven, I appreciate yours even more with the little are history lesson, and after having seen one of her early works in the on-line references that is striking ly similar!

I haven't started mine yet--need to cogitate more. I notice that most are gravitating to florals, although I recollect her palette on most flowers as generally being more severe: lots of white and navy, although I guess the poppies were bright enough. and she did an iris that was impressive, didn't she? Maybe I'm wrong on the palette. But her skulls always attracted me--bones have such a stark beauty. My little natural history collection isn't even unpacked, and doesn't go so far as cow skulls, but I think I have something more along the lines of chipmunk bones...hmmmm.........

Just to avoid any misunderstanding -it IS based on some early abstract paintings O'Keefe did, often refered to as the Canyon series :p

Afraid it's not very O'Keefe, couldn't stop myself adding in all the details. I may have another go if I have time and try to loosen up a bit. I'm not too happy with the scan, it's lost the subtle changes in colour, the orange has rather washed everything else out. 15"x15" on Wallis, underpainted with orange Createx.

I love all the crinkley texture you put in though. This is just 'in the style' of O'Keefe, you gave it what you saw and wanted to bring out and that's better than just imitating. I had trouble with the oranges and digi too, I have magentas in the cool areas and it wouldn't differentiate...so I can appreciate how in must look in RL...beautiful!

When I first saw this I knew it was a magnolia, so I think you did capture the feel of it, Mo. Also, I think O'Keefe's purpose was to show people something she saw in flowers that they might not, and you did that well. So glad to have you back, girl!!!

This is my entry for this project. It was done with Rembrandt soft pastels on regular pastel paper. The size is 9 x 12. I hope everyone is enjoying this project as much as I am. Thanks for sharing such wonderful work. Please take a bow!

"can't seem to stop myself painting in all the details."

That is not a bad thing! Your execution of the many different planes of the delicate poppy petals is superb! Nice , soft, sheen...

Hi, Terry . the iris looks great. don't all the flower close-ups look pretty? wouldn't they be niced framed and then hung together in a grouping? In a garden room, of course! I think I'd like to start a "collection" ... A rose of course...oh, maybe several roses all diffent colors...ok, then a nasturtium, holly hock, larkspur...hmm. each one a fun challenge.

The keys to happiness are found in: having something to do, something to love and something to hope for.

Nice use of analogous colors.....confident strokes...I think this is a good example of "breaking a rule" to create a successful composition....I am referring to the lily being in the center but it doesn't look like it because of the way you broke up the rest of the picture plane.........slick! ;)
