Well I guess I've used up all my beginners luck with pastels on that back porch, because this is just not in the same league :D
It started off well enough, I'll post the 1 3/4 hr pic, and some promise was there.
Geez, the thing took me 5 ( five, cinque, 1/2 a 'dec') hours to get finished and the freshness has worn off, as did my enthusiasm.
Note the grapes got smaller and smaller as I proceeded from left to right- a sign of getting weary and losing intensity. :D
Doesn't matter, had fun, got out of three hours housework (please tell me it'll have done itself when I get there !!)
Nu Pastels on light tan Mi Tientes (smooth side) 10" x 12.5" ( 26 x 32 cm)
Maybe tomorrow I'll feel like expanding the grapes- pretty much everything is fixable, I've been told by someone who knows these things !!
ps can anyone tell I have no idea what grape leaves really look like ?? :D

And Judy, thanks so much for the wonderful vacation photos !! Are you going to let us know how it went at the Kington event ??

Hi Lauren,

Lucky me. I get to be the first to comment. (Haven't painted yet this weekend just cheering everyone else on.) I like the softness of the background where it meets the light in the center. I'm not an expert on grape leaves but I think they have lots of little points on their edges. Someone else can correct me if I'm wrong. Yours look right.

I just love the soft reds and greens here, and it's a nice crop- wonderful!
(I did a crop of the grapes too but can't get it to photograph tonight.)

Hi lauren, ooh this is pretty so far. Kat's right about the leaves, they have 5 sections but artistic liscense might be at work here. What I like best here is the subtle filtered light. Beautiful.

Dab I don't know why you are whining?? I really love what you have done with the grapes, they look gorgeous and so do your leaves. Love the colors you got in them and you used pastels. Little secret I thought that this would be so neat in pastels, right, so I got out my brand new box (never have used them before) and obviously my painting is done in WC. Does that tell you anything? I just couldn't make them work. And here you have a seemingly effortless pastel painting.

Great great job

The mood here is what counts. It has a vague look, but very expressive. I like your choices of colors and not too much busyness.

Very nice lighting! Nice thing about pastels--brush off the parts you don't like and keep the rest :D

Ahhhh...you're killing me Lauren! This is the first time we've done the same photo......I like yours way better. Wanna trade? Huh, do ya?? PLEASE?? :wink2:
I love how soft you made it all look and how delicate it appears to be. How brave you are to do each grape individually......I totally cheated when I did mine. As far as what grape leaves look like.......GEEZ! Who knows or cares. Yours look wonderful. GREAT JOB....NICE WORK.

OK! I'll be the smarty, but only because we have grapes out our back door hanging on the patio arbor...to simplify, they look something like a maple leaf with pointy edges as you have on the leaf at the top right. Good color for them. This is nice...you did good! :D

Thanks for posting both pictures - I think you've woven some beautiful colours. I finding it hard to paint/draw from one side to another - so seeing how you've worked is fascinating. (It also means that i tend to smudge pastels a lot!!!). Lovely grapes.

I really really like this. The way you blended the background colours, the leaves and the grapes all turned out great! Well done!

Maybe not a match for your porch pastel but still very fine indeed! The colours are dreamy.

Jeepers Lauren - those grapes and vines are gorgeous.....your pastel work looks so accomplished......I shouldn't really be surprised, you do so well in other mediums, why not pastels too?
The precision and the light on the grapes is superb - and I can see why you got artist's cramp!!!!!!!! The softness of the bk/gd lighting and leaves is lovely too..... :envy: :envy: :envy:
If neo-pastels can do this, I'll have to put them on my Santa list!
(Now I'm about to upload my grapes - maybe I should just tread them for vinegar instead!) :crying:

Maybe this looks better on the monitor than it does in "real life"??--because look at the comments and how much it diverges from how you feel about it! Sometimes the monitor does indeed enhance our work --because, after all--it is pure light radiating into our eyes--illuminating! but I will join the chorus, that I think this looks VERY good--good composition with a formal look--I like it alot!

I think this is wonderful! I particularly like the colors you used in your leaves, which I love.

For me, the grapes are the focal point of your interpretation and they are outstanding. The colors used on the vine really offset the greens too.

Thanks to all you artists out there who not only walk the walk, but take time to talkthe talk :D :D :) That's the best part of the WDE's to me- the conversations back and forth are always fun !!!

Thanks to Deirdre (Deepat) for recommending a grape leaf picture- I abused the paper a whole lot more and changed my leaves- I'm more comfortable with them now. Also increased the crop on the centre bunch. That better be finished, 'cause I'm quittin' no matter what ! :D :)

ps I suppose I could have just waited for Lorna to post (had I known she was going to do the grapes) cause her leaves look like they're growing in my monitor !

Absolutely spot on title then isn't it!!!!! Coz I looked at the pictures then read your ridiculous self deprecating - well can't sayt the word I want to so will say rubbish instead!!!
You have to know this is good woman. You give me lectures and then go on with a thread like this - Can't you just say that my course did me good and wey hey look what I did, {puffs chest out with pride}. :D

In real life at least in my world (lol) grapes are different sizes just the same size in advertising and glossies lol!

If you can't abide looking at it because of all of the dreadful mistakes  I will dispose of it for you - promise!!!!

     Good work, ney marvellous work - admit it. Oh and before how I go like the bragging photo of the new pastels, mine are all black on the outside, can't believe that you have used these for painting and think these are for 'modelling' purposes. Are you getting a retainer from the pastel company??

Sorry about the cheeky post - you bring out the worst in me and the best Lauren, hope you raise a smile over it anyway. {{{{{{hugs}}}}}}.
