Doug - we can't thank you enough for doing all the background work on this. Sandra and I are quite excited about getting there and seeing your wonderful country and the other WC'ers. Going to book the flight and car rental this week-end. Does anyone know of a web site that outlines traffic signs and rules of the road? I need to go over this before tackling driving on the other side. :(

Just finished booking our flights and other travel arrangements - how did we ever do this before the internet came along? We're flying into Glasgow Sept 10th, (arriving early - 5:00 am :( ) renting a car and heading south to spend the first week near Penrith where we've booked a great looking self-catering (converted farm) just outside a village. This looks like a good base to explore Hadrian's Wall, the Lake District and the Penines. Going to be busy.

Will be leaving there on Friday, Sept 16th to meet all of you at Kettlewell hopefully the same day. We've then got until Sept 25th to get back to Glasgow for our return. Really looking forward to this - 10 months to go.

Just finished booking our flights and other travel arrangements ..........

Good work, David - sounds like a great holiday you have planned. You'll be staying near Dominic at Penrith.

I'll put together some suggestions of places to see comfortably from Penrith for you, although I know you will already be enjoying looking for places on the web. For me half the fun of a holiday is doing the research and planning places to visit.

I look forward to meeting you both in Kettlewell.

Hi again,

We've sent off a deposit to book Wayside Cottage for the week 17 - 24 Sept, so hopefully Colin & I will be joining the Dales Diary  :D too!

Nina

P.S. We had a ride over to Kettlewell between Christmas & New Year.

Wharfedale is just as beautiful in Winter as in the other seasons. A little snow had settled on the hill tops while we were there, lots of gushing waterfalls, wish I'd had chance to stop & take some photos.

There were lots of walkers around, although they did have all the right gear to wear & a few red faces from the cold winds!

The village shop is amazing - like going back in time :D

Yorky

That's good news, Nina - look forward to meeting you both.

Yes, Kettlewell is an idyllic place really in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales.

We now have 25 definite and 4 probables. Still room for 3 more men in room 9.

Anyone else wanting to come better reserve their accommodation before it gets booked up by walker and holidaymakers. There are several self-catering and B&B's in the link above.

Hi Billy,

I have been unable to locate a Walkabout pub in Southport, but a Google revealed a reference to a club in Liverpool and a Walkabout pub in Brighton.

Oh and a Walkabout pub in Southport on Australia's Gold Coast ;)

I'll keep looking.

Here's the updated list of definite and possible participants for Kettlewell. Note that Dieter(billythekid) is considering coming for part of the week. I would advise those who are thinking of coming who are not booked to organise their accommodation well in advance.

http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/02-Mar-2005/1046-List3_2005.jpg

I will be asking for money from everyone sometime in June - I have to pay in full for the accommodation in July.

Whilst we have no formal tutorials organised, I am sure there will be many opportunities for informal "demos" during the week. I will shortly post a list of possible painting locations for you to check out.

As some of you already know, I went through Kettlewell this weekend.

It was a beautiful place, a painting scene on every corner :D

The first photo is of Dale House where most of us will be staying.
The car park is just facing, and you will get a pass for the car park, btw so that you don`t have to keep paying to park there.

This bench was just over the road from the guest house.
I`m posting this photo to let you all know that I bagsy this bench for my pliene aire.....lol.http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/29-Mar-2005/13042-2005_0328camcorder0052.JPG

The best news is there are three pubs within staggering distance, in fact you can see two of them from the guest house..........lol.The other is just a bit further up the road.

I`ve decided not to post any more, because I don`t want to spoil the fun for you.
If anyone wants other sneak pre views, Calendar girls is on on Friday night 10.30pm on sky movies 1 .

Hi folks,

question came to my mind: Are we planning to do plein-aires (would be first time for me) ? I would like to know because of the things (easel, chair etc.) I would have to pack to get into the plane.

Thanks.

Yorky
04-01-2005, 07:47 AM
Plein air? - I hope so, Billy - but I don't bother with an easel - I work on my knee and use a block of paper. I'll bring an extra chair for you to save you having to bring one.

My essential plein air equipment is:

1. A haversack/stool containing my watercolour pad/block and sketch book and :

2. Folding palette with dried tube paint,

3. Pencil case with brushes, pencils, erasers rolling ruler, etc.

4. Double compartment water holder, valve topped sports drink bottle for carrying water,

5. Masking fluid and ruling pen,

6. Kitchen paper for clean up,

7. Folding garden chair (much more comfortable than my stool)

8. Camera

Sounds a lot, but everything except the chair fits in the haversack.

Doug

Plein air - you bet !

I've got my eyes on that bench too

PS

....

Hmmmmm.....Doug, it looks to me like Dale house is self-catering. Is that true?? Because, you know, I've just taken a course in Tuscan cooking.....and I LOVE to cook for big crowds......hmmmmm......would a cooking demo count??

How long will it take to drive from Leeds to Kettlewell? Is Leeds the best point to take a train and rent a car?? It looks like it's pretty easy to get to Leeds by train from London. Is that right???

Yum Yum Kate .... I definately think you should do a demo :D
Manchester would be a lot closer airport for you than Heathrow or Gatwick if you can get a flight from where you are
Edited to say....... sorry I don't know about Leeds :(

Yorky
06-29-2005, 06:38 PM
Sorry I'm late to respond, Kate, just got home from David's.

Yes, it's self catering Kate - I would usually have breakfast, lunch out and a pub meal in the evening. If you can solve the logistics of getting together the ingredients (probably Skipton would be the nearest town for those) I'm sure everyone would would look forawrd to an Italian cooking experience. The kitchen at the hostel is quite well equiped.

Leeds is easily accessible by train from London. The journey from Leeds to Kettlewell is around 50 miles and would take around an hour and a half depending on the traffic. The journey from Manchester Airport to Ketlewell is around 80 miles, much of it on motorways and would take around the same time. I suggest you try www.multimap.com for the routes. I checked on www.carhire3000.com and was able to hire a car at Leeds downtown (presumably close to the station) or Manchester Airport.

Have a good holiday meanwhile.

Doug

leojacko

Hi Kate

Leeds/Bradford Airport is north of Leeds [in the right direction] & quite close to Skipton & Kettlewell - 34.2 miles according to the AA route finder & 1hr 5 mins driving time. Car Hire is always easier from airports.

http://www.theaa.com/travelwatch/planner_results.jsp?minx=385024&miny=457132.5&maxx=430080&maxy=494853.5&width=430&height=360&author=&toolMode=1&displaymap=true&showMap=true&gp=map#map

I'm not sure about the cost of a flight from London to Leeds - it may even be cheaper than the rail fare !! :)

If you want to give me a shopping list for the cooking ingredients I'll get them for you from our local shops & bring them along. There is an amazing little village shop in Kettlewell, but not sure how great their stock is. They may even be on-line as when we went in there they had a PC on the desk. :wink2:

LOL - was like the road runner - good job there was no trafic :D ;)

There is a large range of pots and pans, wonder if next door's chef (in the picture and who maintains the place) would lend us one? I'll try and pay another visit up there and check it out. No hardship, it's a lovely run.

Oh, Doug, don't make a special trip--if there are a couple of large ones we could use them. We can figure out a way to find or rig pretty much whatever we need. Except for knives, or course--or at least a knife sharpener.

Hmmmm....let me think about a list and maybe we can see if someone can bring anything out-of the ordinary.

Knives, no problem.
I will bring my chefs knifes, and the steel to sharpen them.
I also make a mean Lasagne, maybe we should team up Kate.
30 will be a challenge though, my numbers are usually 300 upwards, but maybe this once I can scale down lol

Joe

PS, my car will have plenty of room, so if there are other things needed, let me know, as I will probably have them and can bring them.

Doug I'd be willing to do a small type demo, class whatever on the new style of painting I've been doing at the moment.

But I think I will learn more from thses few days than I will be able to give.

Also, DW, Chris may be interested in coming for the 1st couple of days over the weekend, is there anywhere to put her up, or should I look for a B&B? Although she hasn't made her mind up yet!!

I wonder just how loud Andy snores???

He is allocated a twin room at the moment and if he could sleep in Bedroom 9 for a couple of nights you could use Bedroom 8. How about it Andy?

I would like everyone to let me know their arrival and departure days, so that I can see if there is any spare accommodation.

I think we can arrange demos as required depending on the weather - which I am sure will be fine. I would hope we can do our touring/plein air bit every day, and if anyone has a special request, let me know. I'll put together a suggested list of "gems" to visit and paint. This doesn't preclude anyone going off on their own for a special visit (e.g. Rbblehead Viaduct).

I know our accommodation won't be ready until Sat morning, but I can sleep in the car for one night :)

There will be no problem bringing knives with me, as I am not flying.
They will be locked in my car during the Ferry crossing, no problems at all.

Doug - CRS setting in here but what dates are me and SWMBO booked in for - I couldnt remember.......or is it that we can turn up anytime from Friday 16th onwards?

I have decided to forgo the motorway route and am nipping up to Preston then across country - not much difference in travel time but a much nicer route methinks. Oh and will there be a sign on the house like on Jaytees (ie Wet Canvas here) - just in case I wonder into the wrong place.

Will be bringing some Uncle Joes mintballs with me - probably a couple of big jars - and again - if anyone is coming whom I didnt meet in Kington - would be grateful if you could bring a fridge magnet from your neck of the woods - will swap for a Wigan one........LOL.

A UK get to gether! Excellent.

It has been quite a long time since I have been on here (I recognise names here, bet mine isn't recognised though! )

It was seeing your reply on the BBC site 'Are you a Digital Citizen' page Yorky that reminded me of Wet Canvas!

Anyway, if there are no objections I may drive up for one of the days as it isn't that far and I'm often in the surrounding areas working anyway and the paints and ink pens are always in my rucksack so I'm always prepared!

OK, the photo links were popular, so can I introduce you to a photography project which aims to cover every 1km square in the UK with photographs submitted by the public. Madmum (Ruth Harris) and I (Doug Elliot) have submitted our fair share, and there are some wonderful shots there.

So if you want to tour the British Isles in photos, have a look at the Geograph site (http://www.geograph.co.uk/mapbrowse.php), Squares SD and SE cover the north of England.

Enjoy!

We check in at Wayside Cottage after 4pm on Saturday 17th.

Maybe will be hanging around the village or area a little before then anyway.

Have a few ideas about places to paint - one of my favourite places is Gayle Beck, so that's definately on my to do list so are upper Wharfedale and Coverdale.

Still hadn't got my Ferry ticket, so this morning I ring the Ferry company, only to be told that yes, I was booked on the Ferries, but my booking had been cancelled as I hadn't paid.
This is amazing.
I know I have a bad memory, but when you book over the phone, you give your credit card details and the booking is made.
The girl on the line tried to blame me.
I asked her would the booking have been made without payment.
She replied - no, we take payment at time of booking.
To cut a long story short, I had to book (and pay) again.
I shall have to ring the bank on Monday to check the last payment wasn't taken out.
Just as well I rang up.
So I'll still be there late Friday night.
See you all then.

I got a TomTom for my car yesterday (Sat Nav).
No more stopping after every junction to read what the next step is, on my hand written notes.
I'm taking it out for a text run today.

You just put in the post code of home, then Belfast Ferry Terminal, then Liverpool Terminal, then Kettlewell postcode (thanks Yorky).
Then I sit back relax, and listen to a nice voice directing me all the way.
Maybe see you all an hour earlier on Friday night.

Just had a pm from DaviBR requesting a contact number for Dale House. I have a feeling that the 01756 794490 owner's number is in Skipton, so an emergency number would be the Cottage Tea Rooms next door which is 01756 760405 and this can be used for Cliff View too.

Just wondering??????????????

I have heard so much about a book........."painting watercolour portraits that glow", by Jan Kunz

Does anybody who is going to Kettlewell own it, and if so would it be possible for you to bring it with you, so I can have a little look, before I buy?.

It`s expensive to buy so I was hoping to check it out a little, just so I can see if it`s worth purchasing.

Cheeky cow!! aren`t I??

Hey, we used the TomTom on our assault on Easter Europe this summer, and it was great! You can choose the voice and the nationality of the "person" who gives you directions, so we had "Jane". It was like having a 5th person in the car, luckily, since BIL only THINKS he can read maps. The first lesson we had to learn was to trust her. But some of the roads had been changed since our chip was made, so sometimes her map showed us driving in the middle of a field, or a round-a-bout had been changed, she would tell us to "turn around at the nearest possibility"
Maybe I will bring some of my books, which seemed like a good idea to buy at the time.

Thanks for looking everyone, as you can see it`s quite expensive .................I refuse to pay over seventy or even ninety pound for a book, especially without seeing it first.

Joe, thankyou, I`ve got the flowers one and her painting from photographs book. That is probably why it sticks in my throat to pay so much for the portrait book, when they were a standard sort of price.

Kate Mc
09-11-2005, 06:58 AM
Guillaume, I'll bring some. It's hard to describe. It's not exactly paper, it's a sort of plastic "paper" used by printers because it's tough and takes ink well. But it resists water also, making it very interesting for watercolor. Here's (http://www.wetcanvas.com/forums/showthread.php?t=292386&highlight=yupo) a thread where Celeste's using it.

Has anybody heard from Joe today? There were some pretty big riots in Belfast last night.

YOO HOO, JOE! Check in, woudja???

Kate

guilliame
09-11-2005, 07:32 AM
Kate  thanks for the link,ok yupo is a type of plastic material that absorbs paint slower than watercolour paper then tonk it with a coffee filter to create texture, sounds like fun,i know when i was experimenting with watercolours, not so hot on wet on wet colour washes :) so used the colour neat then applied water to suit, sometimes i used too much so to tone it down i used more water then dabbed or tonked over it with a thick absorbent piece of kitchen roll and i noticed there was a hint of texture left behind,

Hey Joe,do as your told and check in :)

Quite a saga, Judy the hunt for the phone. Not sure whether here will be a mobile signal at Kettlwell, it is well up the dale. May ring the village store and ask.

Looked at the BBC Atlantic Chart (http://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/coast/pressure/) and it indicates a high pressure system hovering west of Ireland by Friday, so it will be chilly north winds at Kettlewell. Warm clothing and woollen gloves wil be de riguer for plein air painting.

Okay Yorky, thanks for the mobile numbers. Our phone won't work in the Uk but in a pinch we could try a land-line. Our first plane leaves here in about 12 hours and we should finally roll, (stagger) into York Thursday around noon time. My bags about 85% art materials so I hope none of you artsy UK people wrinkle your nose at my sometimes recycled clothes. Judy will be turned out much better, as usual. We are at the Moat House in York till Saturday morning. If there is something we can haul over you can reach us there. Our plan is still to go to Whaw Saturday and base out of there until we can get into Greta house on Monday. We will look into driving down towards Kettlewell Sunday to scout a bit but painting will be a priority and we might not make it... or if we do we might not see any of your lot about... or if we do see them we might speed up. However we will be in Kettlewell from Monday afternoon on. Dave & Judy.

Well, we're all packed. We're now in that last hour or so when you have nothing to do but wait for the taxi and wonder what you've forgotten. Have you evern actually twiddled your thumbs???

We're off today to Manchester airport, then we'll drive to York to visit some friends from Belgium. Then we'll drive to Kettlewell tomorrow, arriving around mid-afternoon I think.

Hmmmm....I wonder if I have time to pick up a chocolate bar for Pat. It seems like she had a hard day yesterday. Dunno, Pattypurple, but I'll try..... Hold on!

SEE YOU ALL TOMORROW!

Kate, who's STILL worried about Joe.....

Oh gosh - isnt it exciting!!!!

I still have to clear my room yet for the electricians so will have to pack tonight.

Mum nearly didnt want to come after all the upset yesterday - I said 'Well I am going regardless!!' - anyhoos its all sorted now so she is happy.

Oh and have bought two large bags of Uncle Joes Mintballs - one for each house to share.

We will be setting off around dinnertime I think and taking the leisurely route so hopefully will arrive mid afternoon.

Can't wait to see everyone!!

OY - scuse me - there is nothing wrong with my driving skills or my ability to find my way anywhere - as for the two roads we missed to Kington (which we never found our whole time there) - how was I to know we were entering the Herefordshire equivalent of Brigadoon......lol.

And another thing - I am perfectly well behaved - its Alan and Joe and Andy who got me in loads of trouble - dragging me into the pub - and JJ and Stephie keeping me in the one pub till the early hours of the morning. :p

AND ANOTHER THING - THAT'S GOING IN THE BOOK!!!!

((((((((((Jana)))))))))))

We will miss you so much.

Did you notice that my name wasn`t mentioned once in the above post.
Now you all know who was in the pub every night.

There was me getting the blame all this time, when the truth finally comes out the night before Kettlewell.
Now every one knows I was tucked up in bed with my warm cocoa every night.
