A new project has been announced in the WetCanvas! project system!

Title: Holiday Cards in Pastel!
Project Leader: 1mpete
Relative Difficulty: Easy
Type Restrictions: Postcard/Notecard
Medium: Pastels
Subject: Not Applicable
Days open for signups: Always
Maximum participants allowed: Unlimited

Description:

The Holiday Season is fast upon us! Sending a greeting card at this time of year is a happy tradition and a way to maintain contact with distant friends and family. Last year, I decided to send a card with a piece of my artwork on it so everyone could see what I was doing. I received calls and notes from people thanking me. Several people even said they would frame the picture to have as part of their future Holiday decorating. It was good for my self-confidence and appreciated by those who received a card. So that is what this Project is about . . .

Do a Holiday painting that represents your Holiday customs…Thanksgiving, Christmas, Kwanzaa, Hanukkah…most cultures have a Holiday that occurs at this time of year. Use the reference photos at left for ideas then let your creativity flow. Put the faces of loved ones in a Holiday scene. Paint a scene reflecting Winter in your part of the world. Create a still life painting of objects representing the season to you. Paint a favorite toy or group of toys. Paint a pile of candy or ornaments. Create something from your imagination. Paint a child enchanted with the spirit of the season. There are so many possibilities.

Last Year, I used a reference photo of a chipmunk eating a nut and a photo of poinsettia leaves to compose a painting of a chipmunk on a stump eating a candy cane with evergreens and poinsettia leaves in the background. It was fun to create and it my first animal painting AND it came out pretty well. I used pre-creased card stock and envelopes purchased at the local office supply store. To compose the card, I used an inexpensive print shop type program. It was so easy to do, that I also personalized my envelopes by printing labels (easier than printing envelopes). In fact, the whole experience was so satisfying that all my Birthday Cards this year have been composed and printed by me. Some with my artwork, some with clip art and some with a combination.

There are lots of images in the Reference Image Library available to inspire you, especially in the still life category. In the Flowers category, there are poinsettias and many forms of evergreens in the Trees and Bushes categories.

I've signed up! This was a most enjoyable experience last year when I did four paintings and printed out cards - everyone was sooo appreciative to get a little painting of mine -

I'm going to try to do this. Not making any promises though...but I will realy try. It is a nice idea.
How do we get addresses and stuff if we want to send them?

Sandy

People interested in sending cards can PM me their address and I will compile an address list to be PM'd to each person on the mailing list and only those on the list. Hope you will join in Sandy, even if it's just to make a card to send out to business contacts. It becomes a good form of advertising, too.

Ho! Ho! HO! We are off and running! Our mailing list has 5 names on it already! I'm going to do a collage of cards from my artist friends to become a permanent part of my Holiday decor. Don't forget if you want to be on the mailing list to PM me your address. Hmmmmm...what to paint....hmmmm

How do people feel about snail-mailing cards to other countries. I'd like to add my name to the mailing list but wonder if it's fair to expect people to send cards to addresses outside their own country. Or would we just send to those on the list who live locally ?

Mikki Petersen
11-08-2004, 08:43 AM
Good question. I participated in two postcard exchange projects where we sent original art to 24 other participants all over the world. For anyone's curiosity...it is 80 cents US to mail anywhere in the world. If anyone is worried about the cost, they can choose not to sent out of Country. This is all a voluntary thing in the spirit of the season. I don't mind sending outside my Country...in fact it is a bit more special to get mail from foreign places. Keeps my postperson intrigued. :D

postcard exchange projects where we sent original art

I assume those were not pastel! That would keep the postman intruiged...or messy!

I have done a holiday card exchange with people from another forum and it was all over the world. None were prohibitive to send and it was great fun getting them from Australia and New Zealand and Sweden. But there were people in the group who just couldn't afford to send them to everyone and we all understood that.

I don't imagine we are talking about huge numbers here either...obviously sending out 200 cards at .80 a pop would add up!

[QUOTE=meowmeow]I assume those were not pastel! That would keep the postman intruiged...or messy! QUOTE]

Actually, a lot of them were pastel or oil pastel...but we all sent them in envelopes wrapped in glassiene so the postman wouldn't ruin them...or steal them  And it was great fun. Those swap projects are a good way to get to know other members who usually frequent different forums.

As for the expense...we are from as many levels of affluence as we are varied backgrounds and resident countries...I would expect everyone to do only what is comfortable for them. This is supposed to be fun not stressful.

Boy, did I get in a mess with this one- all those darks! Again this was a real learning experience as I've painted very little architecture and never at night ! I can see that some of the windows etc are a bit wobbly and that clock face was a real pain to get symmetrical, and I can see now I've missed a line of lights.
C&C welcome.

Preston, this is already looking very good. You have wonderful lights and reflections on the ornaments. Does the acrylic wash leave the tooth pretty much intact on the Wallis? Do you heavily dilute it?

Hi Mikki, and thanks again for bringing this project to fruition.

Yes, I dilute the acrylic heavily, thus the underpainting is very dull. The advantage is that the white "holidays" are non existent. It also gives me an early look at the light /dark pattern. Hoping Santa brings me a set of Createx. :D

Thanks, Sandy; I'm hoping the red glass ball has been pushed back far enough now with the addition of greenery and a dropped shadow- it needs to read "under", so at least I've got that right. The whole stand thing will give me fits, but I figure it gets too stubborn and I'll just crop- no skin off my nose.

Dunno if I'll get to much more today- kids coming in for a visit and some errands to run. We'll see.

Julie! this is already gorgeous. Such bright rich colors of the season. The star looks okay to me so far. The greenery is some of the most believable I've ever seen painted. Have to agree with Preston though...that red ball does seem to be balancing the bowl atop of it...maybe because it is "kissing"...

Mikki Petersen
11-11-2004, 02:30 PM
BTW...not sure if everyone knows this...just because you are designing art for a holiday card, you don't have to limit the size of your painting. Work at a comfortably large size. When it is reduced to print on your cards, it will look even better.

Defining the stand took care of the balancing ball problem...should have known you had it planned.

You seem to have the same affliction I have. By the time I'm half way through a painting, I've lost interest and want to move on...so many paintings, so little time.

What a treat to drop in and see what gorgeous artwork cards you are all creating. I'm a bit behind in all facets of my life at the moment and thinking of the holidays isn't possible at this moment - sorry Mikki. I think you need to start this thread in August... give me time to prepare :) .

Lovely work - the ornaments, the bowl with greenery, the fabulous poinsettias, and the warm cozy home. Those are what come to mind - if I'm missed one - oh yes - the snowman!!! Excellent work!

thanks for making me start to think of the holidays!

As finished as it's going to get- I've got a few too many irons in the fire right now. I've been checking all the entries and might I say "WOW!" there's some really good stuff here- y'all oughta get in touch with Hallmark. Both the poinsettas are very nice (one of my favoriste plants, but they die easily- on me, anyway), and the snowman decoration is precious. Nice house, too- it looks very festive. The town scene is wonderful- very cheerful and bright! And I must add "Preston's balls are very shiny" (If anyone is thinking I meant anything other than the painted ornaments, you have wicked, filthy minds). Odd greenery, though- looks nothing like the stuff up here.... :D

Amber, how did you manage to get so much variation in the Poinsettia leaves? This limited palette is driving me to drink! (hot cocoa, that is)

Thanks Preston, it was looking at the O’Keefe project that gave me the idea for this crop.

Thanks Preston and Sandy - glad you like it. I think I will leave it plain - that way I still have a painting when Christmas is done. I can always decorate the little tree individually for family.

Sandy, I used to walk and cross-country ski in woods like this and had this picture in my mind after I talked with you about it. The tree shadows on the bottom are a happy accident - I didn't like what I originally had there, so I brushed it out and voila! there were the shadows. Sometimes you just have to go with the flow!

Waaahhh!!!
I finally was feeling better and had some time so I set something up and sketched it onto the paper. Then I used some Nupastels and then went over that with turps. I have done that before. The turpentine dries almost instantly and then I have an underpainting...and well...this time something went haywire. The turps won't really dry. I have used paper towels to wipe some off and been working a bit with the pastels over it but so far it is looking pretty odd.
I am going to try giving it some more time and see if it dries and I can work on it some more.
If not I'm not sure if I am up for starting all over...and this is so bad I don't think I can even show it....it's just all muddy yucky awful.
I think I'll go do something else for a while.

How awful! You've done this before, what was different? The paper? The brand of turp?

meowmeow
11-21-2004, 02:57 PM
I have done it before. I used to do it all the time. However, this turpentine has been sitting here for a long time and I think it somehow has gone bad.
I did just upload one picture so you can see it. You can see the alligatoring in the background. The pastel just isn't going on right. Sort of smearing and a lot of it looking very dark and odd.
It also is a much more complex painting that I had thought. Well, I knew it would be but this is just putting it over the edge.
I may try to play with it again later but I think I will possibly attempt it again or try something else...after the holiday this week. Just too much going on right now.

Thanks Mikki,
It wouldn't be finished without the color:) but that will be done with my oil pencils that I use with the oil pastels. I'm doing each one individually so every one is different. I'll post a pic of some of them with the color later :) This one was so much fun that I'm sketching another (wooden snowman) with my pastel pencils but it will have to be printed. The pastel falls off too much unless I spray it a lot.

I'm glad you are enjoying it! I usually loathe the whole holiday card thing. But last year when I designed my own card for the first time, it became much more personal as a gesture than just buying cards and signing them. That's where the idea came from for this project. Then I remembered how much fun it was to receive mail from all over the place when I participated in the Postcard Exchanges so thought we might have a Card list for here, too.

Sandy, this came out quite nicely. You would be much happier, I think, if you just accepted that every painting has a really ugly stage where it looks like it will never come out...but it does in the end. :) I agree with Cori that the shine on those ribbons is very convincing. Attention!

I have PM'd the Holiday Card List to everyone who PM'd me an address (I think  ).

If you received the list, please check your address and be sure it is right.

If you sent me an address but did not receive a list, please PM me right away and I will correct the list.

If you did not send me an address, you will not receive the list. The project is about the art, not the exchange, so you are welcome to be part of the project without joining in the exchange.

HO! Ho! Ho!

Are you going to finish this one,, I hope? I know the color pallette is a bit restricted but you can liven it up by adding some additional contrast colors and secondary compliments. I think it looks beautiful so far.

I may finish it eventually. It is put away for now as I have no desire to work on it. It's funny how emotional painting can be.

Well, I am plugging right along on this lil guy...I really like how HE is looking, but something is amis with that cloth. I want it to look soft and rich (the rich will be in the colour) but right now is seems to be so full of movement that I almost fear the snowman will tip over! lol

I am wondering if I straighten the "horizon" if it might help pull it together. maybe I'll pull it into photoshop and see if i can test my theory there...but if anyone has any suggestions - just let me know...I am planning to finish this either today or tomorrow.

OK here is my effort. Weather here is ghastly so it made me stay in & get on with designing my card. It is the Port area where we live in Spain - usually they decorate the streets with fancy lighting this time of the year; but as yet it hasn't been done.

So I improvised using a pic we took one evening & painted this with oil pastels for the first time- not sure if I like them as much as softies!! but as you can scratch out thought they would be a better option.
Now I have to figure out the printing & get them off to you this week .

I agree! Alexandra - this is a very festive scene. So often I tend to associate the holidays with deep white snow and cold and i forget that it isn't like that everywhere! I really like this piece! Good job!

Alexandra, this is a lovely painting and will make gorgeous cards, I'm sure. I like the bright colors and the exotic scene so unlike what we usually think of at Christmas time. Not only that but I think the scene could be interpretted for other times of year as well. Could be almost any festival scene. Great job!

I really hope to get busy on mine tomorrow. Things have finally slowed down a bit and I'm so jealous of the work all of you have been doing. :envy:

Thanks gang for all your nice comments. This is a first for me - the card was easier to do than working out the printing!! LOL  getting the right envelopes hopefully this afternoon - I did have some all lined up correct size etc, now hubbie has got involved !! so what was a going to be a doddle is turning out to be a major operation with coloured background & printed greetings inside- he used to be an 'Art Director' so whatever I do I get overidden!! Never mind I shall get them all off to you by the weekend- with luck !!

Just to let you know that it never snows in these parts so what you see on this card is all year round , apart from the lights that is :cat:

Ruth, did you join the project? You won't be able to post your work to the project until you join up. Go to the main project page and select "join this Project" and poof! you are in. To comment on entries, you can browse the gallery or you can click on the link attached to any of the thumbnails in this thread. Then select "Comment" and a dialog box will appear. The last bit of wording in that box tells you to delete that sentence and write your message. Don't delete anything above that sentence, or the thumbnail will not appear with your message. Glad you joined us!

Funny you should ask, Ann! We had a project about painting all the colors of white last year. Here's the link: http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/Projects/index.php?cmd=view_details&proj_id=592

In this project everyone painted subjects that are white but they were not to use any pure white. I think if you skim through the thread and the paintings in the gallery, you will find many ideas and answers to your questions. Great beginning to this special card by the way :)

I've put all the cards up on the TV cabinet. What a lovely display!

About half of my cards(includes overseas ones) went out last week before I got interrupted. The other half is going out today. so if you haven't gotten one from me yet, it's on the way.

I'm curious. How did/will everyone print the cards?
I used Avery textured card stock (50 cards for $10US plus ink) with my printer on its best setting.

I was wondering the same thing - I used a Canson watercolor card that's quite heavy and probably won't use again for this type of thing. Box of 30 for $7.99. I use an Epson 1270 printer and the ink cost is a killer at $30 a pop for just the color cartridge. I'm going to print a few more of these on glossy paper to see how they look.

I actual am getting mine done through Future Shop's Photo Lab (I don't know if there are Future Shop's outside of Canada - they are owned by Best Buy, if that puts it in perspective)

Anyway - I am getting 48 custom note cards (with envelopes) with my painting on the front. I think it cost about $40 canadian, but I did the math and realized that if I was to buy commercially available cards, it would cost about $10-15 for 12 cards...so really, custom cards with a custom message inside is about the same price...perhaps even less.

As for my gift tags, I laid them out myself in Photoshop elements and then used the custom package feature to create a sheet of 16 2 X 2.5 inch images. I then had the print shop at work print them off for me on their high res colour laser printer. Cut them myself and I think I ended up with well over 100 tags for about $4. I don't have 100 gifts to give, but I figure if I do a show next year, I can easilly offer them up in packs of 10 as a sale thing...

I thought about printing them myself, but between paper and ink for my Epson RS300...I would probably have been bankrupted. :D

Boy do I understand that rushed feeling! But your work here does not look rushed or forced in any way. Im not familiar with the artist (being uneducated in Art History) but I love the vibrant colors and the hint of stylization. What a beautiful painting to appear on a Christmas card.

I print my cards on Avery card stock using an HP psc 2410 printer. I thought about doing the cards on glossy photo paper this year but got rushed. Photo quality takes so much longer to print. that Epson cartridge sounds pretty reasonable to me...a color cartridge for my HP is about $45US. My total cost for cards and evelopes was about $20US for 50 cards. I would have liked to do textured stock this year but our office supply store was pretty picked over when I went in so it's plain old stock but they look pretty good. Postlady gets them today!

I want to take a moment to thank all of you for joining this project. My life is so hectic right now (in a good way) that I might not have done my cards this year if not for the pressure of doing them for this project. It gives me such a good feeling to do my own cards rather than run out and buy a box of something. After all, we are artists...shouldn't it be our art reflected on our cards? Happy Holidays all.

Ann, I got your card yesterday. Isn't it amazing how well these print up? Yours is just as cute as can be!

I came home to a mailbox full of cards!!

Sherry: Beautiful inviting card!

Sandy: Your bows just glisten!

Mikki: Loved the puppy! looks like he is guarding the tree from Santa.

Kat: The snow scene is perfect. Looks cold, yet that little tree looks protected. The touch of glitter was a great addition.

I am so happy to hear that everyone is getting their cards in time for Christmas (and my apologies again to those who probably won't get theirs until after the 25th - most of those were overseas, but a couple were in the US).

That card printing website I used is really cool. You can also order larger greeting cards - I just preferred the note cards. They also do calendars...and I am thinking of doing that next year as well - I think they would make nice gifts....

I think I have cards from everyone now! They have really added something to my Christmas decorating this year - thank you all! And I think I have officially run out of room to put any more cards!

Cori, I really like the way your cards printed up. I may try that next year.
I did do some “refrigerator” calendars this year. I printed 4 months per sheet of paper so a year only took 3 sheets. Cut them out and stapled the stack to a magnet.
I was so excited that I actually had 12 images that fit into the monthly themes. And the family and close friends who got them, loved them. A big ego boost!
