A new project has been announced in the WetCanvas! project system!

Title: ATC - Animal Project
Project Leader: Godzoned
Relative Difficulty: Irrelevant
Type Restrictions: Any Type
Medium: Any Medium
Subject: Wildlife
Days open for signups: Always
Maximum participants allowed: Unlimited

Description:

Artist Trading Cards Featuring Only Animals

Put your favourite animals on ATC’s and trade with other artists!

ANY MEDIUM
ANY STYLE

Size:
All ATC’s are 2.5 x 3.5 inches (64mm x 89mm)
The same size as baseball cards and other trading cards.
This allows them to fit in plastic sleeves and binder pages designed for protecting and storing other kinds of trading cards.

On the Back of Cards – please put the following:
Title of card
Signature or Name
Date
Medium Used
Country
Email Address
Whether it is a single card or “series card” or a “limited edition print”
If series – put series name and number of card eg. 4 of 6
If limited edition print – put edition name and number of card eg. 3 of 6

Trading:
One card for one card.
NO: “mine is better than yours” or “I want 2 of yours for one of mine for mine is better quality”
One card for one card policy. EVERYONE is equal

PM the artist if you want their card. They will in turn look at your cards and PM you back about the trade.

Trade with other ATC projects. Cross trading will make more variety.
For another (the original) ATC Project final entries click the reference link below.

Once your card is traded, edit your final entry and put “TRADED” in the title of your piece.

Advice:
Link to 'ATC Advice here' thread from the reference link below and ask your questions.

Ok lets start trading!

Remember, in order to help keep the discussions on projects organized, you should post your questions, suggestions, and comments on submitted work here in this thread. By doing this, we allow other non-project efforts to not get "pushed down" by a swarm of project-related threads.

Welcome all!
Any critter will do fine. I count anything an animal as long as it eats something. Imaginary ones eg: dragons etc are also welcome. But as for humanoids - elves, hobbits. They are not counted as animals for they talk and where clothing. Hope this helps. :D

No where are those zoo photos I took a while back.......

Ok, I've just uploaded a progress image to the gallery, thank you Debbie for saying "any critters, even imaginary ones! lol!" I just hope I'm not stretching the guidlines for the project too far! :D but this is the type of thing I had in mind for a series of cards, not finished but it's a start :-) anyway if this is too far out? I'll work on something else :-)

Great new project Debbie
I have to offer an apology here tho'. I just uploaded some new birds and I didn't put them in here. The reason for this is that I have already arranged trades with others in the old group and I felt that to be fair they deserved to see the new cards first, even the birdies.
Perhaps this new place will encourage me to dig out some of those horse and cow snapshots I've taken and get busy making cards.....

You can still cross trade with the old group.
I put a note in the discussion of the original ATC project that I have new cards to trade and a link so they could see them. :D
Doing it that way will help cross trades.... :D

Im all joined up Deb! I don't have any animals at this time LOL Other then the two birds i've already traded with you in the past, and the sea horses which are also already traded. But if I get any Im gonna go ahead and upload all animals here, and in the other to keep my whole gallery togeather.

I should have asked you here, but I asked you over there, are all the trades here only animals for animals since there is cross trading from gallery to gallery. IS is animals for animals in the animal section. Whew that was a mouth full. LOL

Thanks deb, Sorry if its gonna take me some time to produce tho, since I've been in a compleate art break. But im in for then :p

Thank you for the compliment. I used very little pastel pencil, but would use fixative (Krylon). I'm afraid I did not understand how these projects work (I'm a new member - tend to speed read). This is not on a card, but on black paper. I'm so sorry. Please remove the drawing, if you will. It must be at least 11 x 14. I feel like such a dork!

Thanks Debbie, I just would like to add that the recipe ATC's are open to all trading not just other recipes.... hint, hint :wink2:

I loved doing this card and I hope it shows! The black is from changing the ink to blue in my rapidograph pen for the project. At first it upset me but then it grew on me and I think it adds to the horses' personality.

Hi you guys.

I have just signed up.

You are producing such cool works, that I want to keep an eye and hopefully trade for something soon.

I have been getting a little complacent in the ATC project, and need a new challenge to augment my stuff there.

Don't think I have EVER painted or drawn an animal in my life...thinking..thinking...you know I hadn't until I did Pilan and MeikaM a dragon fly collage each.

OKay. My stuff will probably be a bit slow coming, and probably fictional (as in, what is that?)
but I will give it a go.

I may be the queen of quantity at present, ATC numbers wise, but that is a long shot from quality...so will need TLC here guys (don't laugh too loud when I finally submit something okay)

Thank you for starting this project Debs (Godzoned) and of course for getting me addicted to ATC's. What a cool bunch of people ATC'ers are to hang out with...

Grimalkin, it is such a cool work. What a shame it is a bit big...but hey, keep going, just do a slightly smaller size (Godzoned gives good measurements in her introduction to this project). Don't worry about the black paper thing. I use all sorts of stuff, and if it is a bit light, I just put a cardboard backing or something thick on the back, using an acid free adhesive...
As long as you can put who/ what etc on back, not to worry.
You have talent, I am twitching to trade.

Hmmm bit large for an Artist Trading Card (ATC). But no problem. Maybe you could make it into one over several cards. (Hmmm that is a lot of cards) :D Bit like an ATC jig saw puzzle. - just a sugestion if people want to trade with it. (just tell them it is x number of cards)

I won't remove it. It's too lovely to do that. :D

Try to stick to the ATC format of 64mm x 89mm next time. I hope you do more. Love to see them.

Ohhh this one is really good.
Love how you done the "hairs" or are they spikes?

The look of the texture in this is awesome. Work well done.

Took my time didn't I! I had this half done (the underpainting) about two weeks ago. Then I lost the book it was in. Finally found it. Then I couldn't find the puffy stuff! You know, some things just try to give you a hint, but I wouldn't take it. Animal ATCs HERE I COME!

(Come on BEEP! Mixed media animals - I wanna see them! of course....i have to get my nerve up to doing a self portrait~)

Mixed media. Not up to trying to draw an animal yet. But will...eventually.
Like what is coming out you guys. Welcome Weckster !

The fish out of water is a great piece (saw it in ATC Nov). Is it posted here in the Animal project? I looked in finished pieces but it wasn't there.

Any medium and any style welcome here as long as it is ATC size and an animal - fantasy or otherwize. :D

Lion and chimp are going to be posted up tomorrow. The scanner isn't working in colour (yellow/green fluro stripes over everything) So will have to take digi photo. Camera not too good in un-natural light. Still haven't got the full hang on how to use it. Ohhh i also have a dog done too. All in acrylic. but I guess you all will have to wait. :D

Yeah, we did too..used to eat then too...once chookies went off the lay for good ( when Dad's threats and ground shell in mash, didn't produce more eggs) and when Oinkus got too big for our woodshed area...the neighbours used to give us their food scraps also, so never had anyone tell on us for having a mini farm in a residential area... Had a goat, a lamb, a cat, a dog or two and stray relatives as well. (we didn't eat those tho )

heres my pig story:
We had some in Takaka (NZ) as a family. We had a hobby farm. 2 pigs, 3 sheep, dozen bantam hens, dozen normal hens and about 6 rabbits. Dad made some home brew beer one year and it didn't work out for some reason so he fed it to the pigs. They were hung over for a week! Pickled pigs! lol

Hi everyone! I am excited about painting my first ATCs now that I have only 2 shows left before Christmas. :D Silly question #1 : I noticed that regular playing cards are the same measurements as the ATC requirements. What you are going to do sounds great! No standard materials. Anything that is stiff, goes.

I have used the following:
Cardboard - plain and cut up cerial boxes- anything I can get hold of
Canvas pasted on card - pre-prepared stuff that comes in pads of 20 sheets
Matting (the stuff they use to frame pictures)
Drawing board
300gsm watercolour paper
Thermal backed plain material pasted on corigated cardboard and prepared with Jo Sonja's all purpose sealer.
Plain paper stuck on card

Others have used:
Suede drawing board
Felt - Art board
Photographic paper

I know there are plenty more. So really the answer is - anything that you can paint or create on! ATC's are great to experiment with.

Also have a look at this link - ATC Advice (http://www.wetcanvas.com/forums/showthread.php?p=2962245#post2962245) most things you want to know about ATC's and ask anything else you want about them.

No standard material! So gessoed playing cards, paper, cardboard,.. whatever you like provided it's the rigth dimensions!

Silly question #2: do Yu-Gi-Oh trading cards have the rigth dimension? (I don't intend to gesso them, but I wonder if I could store my ATCs in a Yu-Gi-Oh collector book)

don't know.
One way to find out is take an artist trading card into the shop and try to fit it in the slot of a yu-gi-oh collector book. I do things like that. Rather checky aye. Just say to the shop keeper that you would like to know if your cards fit if asked "what are you doing?" :wink2:

Hi guys!

Yu-Gi-Oh cards are the right dimentions... My son plays them and I went a measured for you!

bjcpaints... I use a lot of bristol board. It is great for my drawings and I also use it for mounting my needleart ATC's. It is fairly inexpensive and I can get a bunch of cards out of one sheet. I did my acrylic painting (all 2 of them) on it and had to mount it to an additional sheet because it warped slightly (but not too bad). Oh and WELCOME TO ATC's!

Barbara, for the purists out there, it is nice (I personally think) to use archival quality products if you have them / have access to them.

I just think there such a lot of acid free paper/cardstock etc available out there now, and that it is worth while to consider long term preservation of the wonderful ATC originals.
For adhesion of mixed media and also adding backings to help prevent/fix warping, I have started using PVA glue and also impasto gel medium, both of which are effective and safe.
I also used scrapbook stickies when I was desperate and budget delayed purchasing new stock. They are acid free just fiddly.
But I was naughty when I first started, and just used super glue that I had at home. Also -of course, if you aren't too worried about others giving you acid free stuff, just use the materials Godzoned and Anney (? I think it was) so helpfully suggested.
They have traded me some beautiful cards, and regardless of whether or not they are on acid free materials, I am really pleased to have them.

BTW, I am having such a lovely time displaying all my trades (just yesterday I started putting them into an expensive but high quality photo album, as I want them to stay as colourful as they are now.)
I am using a Creative Memories photo album (since I already have the album for my photo scrapbooking) and just purchased a few pocket pages that use polypropylene as the clear display material..which can showcase seven to eight per side really well.

Looking forward to seeing your work. Black Pearl

Very good advice BP!

I use an acid free photo mounting tape for everything I do (that is everything but the prints). It is very perminant and artwork friendly which is extra important for cotton fabrics and fragile embroidery threads! Even the prints I do of my work is of very high quality, I use the best paper I can find and I adjust the ink in my printer settings in order to get a VERY dark and textured print. It is more expensive but I want them to last FOREVER!

Plus I am bad at doing it anyway...would have to cheat and use a pen, as wobbly initials with a paintbrush.

If you haven't already spent the money just go and buy a binder and empty baseball card sleeves. You can get 30 or so sleeves that each hold 9 cards each for about 4.99 a pack. A binder can cost as little as 1.99 depending on the type you buy. Way cheaper than those fancy game or card specific collector books.
My first one had the transparent sleeve on the front so I made a nifty collage that fit in there and said ATCS on it. I outgrew it though so I got a bigger binder. My latest one is one of those fabric type binders with the clips, rulers, and conversion tables inside. It cost me 2.00 bucks at KMart. It fits over 100 card pages. Here's what it looks like so far. The whole thing doesn't fit in my scanner but you get the idea. :) I painted it with Lumiere paints and it was a piece of cake. I'm going to embellish it a lot more eventually. I cant imagine I'll need a bigger one. If anything I'll make a second volume if it comes to that.

Wow! I'm sure someone PMd you about this already, just in case no one has, please (x100) consider trading with me. I don't have a lot of animal stuff (I haven't even signed up for this Project) but I have a few untraded cards at the main ATC Project. I was going to transfer them here but I got lost looking for the main projetc page.

Cheers!

I'm gonna try to make more animals - after all I need a lot of practice with cats.

I've traded the border collie with Dreams-of-flight. Sorry to disappoint you Joel. But nice to know you like it!!

I hope to get around to more ATCs this week. Maybe more animals, or maybe flowers.

I'm working on big drawings of flowers at the moment, so it would be nice to do some as small ATCs to practise colours- before committing to big colour paintings. :p :)

I was talking to my mum about the stamps I've been saving and she mentioned that she sends her saved stamps overseas to some kids that as their job "cleans" them up for stamp collectors. These kids live in a third world country where their parents find little work. I'll have to get that address off her...... :wink2:

I hunted down some plastic sleeves for my ATCs today.

I got display sleeves to hold about 6 cards and to put in a ring-binder -so my cards from other people in this project (and main ATC project) are neatly displayed and protected. They look scrumptious all together. So bright.

Also some little individual envelopes in clear plastic for sending out my own ATCs.

I feel nicely organised now. Just need a ring binder to hold the sleeves. And I hope to decorate it like others have suggested above.

Fun project for the winter!! :D

Crayon work never looked so good. Use of burnishing tool fascinates me. No idea what it is but I like the effect. Is it something used on metal like copper, or a leather working tool ?
Ie. heated or embossed by manual force.

A burnishing tool can be used for embossing anything it can make an impression on/into through manual force. Paper, leather, foil, thin metal etc. The two I have were made by this company : www.fiskars.com and are double ended tools with ball shaped metal tips of different sizes.

TIP: if you'd like to try the technique, a ballpoint pen which has run out of ink can be used in much the same way.

My prints are not in color but I use a good matte post card paper, I find that photo paper esp. glossy will fade over time. Then I ajust the settings on my printer to the best print, heavier ink and drying time. You might just have to experiment on a few copies and see what works best for what you have. PM me if you like anything of mine! I would love to trade with you!

Ummm.... I can't figure out how to mark the entry that has been traded.
pleae advise.
Barbara

Hi Barbara,

1. Go into the project main gallery, up on the left hand side of the screen you will see 'My Projects' click on that.
2. Under the column 'Final Entries' scroll down to the project for editing and click onto 'Browse/Edit'
3. Scroll down to the entry you want to mark as traded and click on 'Edit this Entry'
4. Type in traded or what ever you want.
5. Then click onto 'Save Changes'

Presto!

Hope that helps!

Andrew these are so terrific! I would love to trade. Send me one of each and I will get a couple of cards out to you. I have not had a lot of time to do any of late because my sports photograpy is taking over my life! I need some creative recovery time doing some ATC's!

I love your prints!

Glad you received the 2 mice OK Barbara and you like it. I adore your 2 little acrylic mice.

I also received Avie's embroidered sparrow which is wonderful. How do you do that??? I've never attempted to print onto material. Great effect!

I had a few more in my mailbox too.

Hi June! I am pleased you like it! I iron a piece of freezer paper to the back of the fabric (after it is preped) to stablize it for the printer. It took LOTS of pratice before I made one work!

Hi all been painting big lately and looking at others paintings and commenting. So no ATCs as of late. But some are still available from me. (See my link below).

Andrew - I'm probably too late but your snake and crane look great. Hoping you have a great time on the ship.

Avie - wow sports photography! Golly all I get is blurs! lol I've only just discovered that I have a continuous function on my digi cam and it only takes two in a row. Great for taking photos of my lovely daughter in action when on the jolly jumper. :wink2:

Cheryl - your bunny design reminds me of those lovely quilts Americans do. Awesome detailed designs.

Well gotta go - lots of other subscribed threads to see the update on. Take care everyone.
