View Full Version : Project Discussion: Dogs, Dogs, And More Dogs!

Artguy29

A new project has been announced in the WetCanvas! project system!

Title: Dogs, Dogs, And More Dogs!
Project Leader: Artguy29
Relative Difficulty: Irrelevant
Type Restrictions: Painting
Medium: Any Medium
Subject: Wildlife
Days open for signups: Always
Maximum participants allowed: Unlimited

Description:

Dogs are one of the most beautiful and expressive subjects to paint. I thought it would be interesting to see how people view these animals through their own eyes. The key is to be as creative as possible, creating a painting that not only shows the dog itself, but reflecting its feelings in the background.

Additional Information:

For more information on the project: Click here! (http://www.wetcanvas.com//Community/Projects/index.php?cmd=view_details&proj_id=775)

Remember, in order to help keep the discussions on projects organized, you should post your questions, suggestions, and comments on submitted work here in this thread. By doing this, we allow other non-project efforts to not get \"pushed down\" by a swarm of project-related threads.

Hi,
Just a quick question - Do we have to use the reference pics you chose or can we submit a painting of a dog of our choice?
Thanks,
Barbara

You can use any reference you like; the ones posted are just some ideas. Looking forward to seeing your work :) .

hi, I have another question: Could we use coloured pencils or soft pastels to do our piece, or would that be considered as a "drawing" and not a "painting"?

Thanks

I checked out the more info link. You can use any medium, wet or dry.

This sounds like fun, count me in. Haven't painted a dog in a while.

Artguy29

You can use any medium. The only restriction is that it must be in color; no pencil, charcoal, etc.

Dave

Ok, colour...got it, thanx!

Is a background required? It says to express the dog's feelings in the background. I really stink at backgrounds...lol.

Artguy29
10-28-2004, 06:49 AM
CRYROFLE,
Some type of background is required. In your case, you can just put some nice colors around the dog. There dosen't have to be any actual "objects" in the background. You can get pretty expressive this way, just by your color choice.

Dave

Quick Note:

As there as been some confusion with allowed mediums, I just wanted everyone to know that any medium may be used, as long as it's a "painting". This word can be interperted in many ways, but I see a painting as something in color. So the basic media you can use are watercolor, acrylic & oil paints; colored pencil, pastel (any type). I ask that you keep within those mediums, but if you have something else in mind, please let me know first; I'm always open to new ideas!
Thanks for signing up!

Hello all,
well this is the first time I've signed up for anything "project" wise.
And I do have a commission (for a friend of a friend..) and I am literally looking at my ref photo's now..... So I might as well combine forces
and maybe stop myself procrastinating!
I'll be doing an 11x14, oil painting.
When I get started I'll post something in the progress area of the projects!
Thanks, Mag

Nice job on this!
Excellent use of colors. I love how you've added a varity of colors to the dog itself, rather than the "standard" fur colors. It gives the piece a very nice look.
What medium did you use? It appears to be in oils.
Well done  !

OK I posted a little black pug I just finished. This is only the 2nd project I have entered. The first one there was no discussion for. It was of my 2 dogs. Anyway, I am still learning the ropes here so I hope this is all in the right place. Thanks.

Barbara,
Yep, this is the right place. You should post all questions, suggestions, comments, etc. in this thread.
I love this little guy! His big, round eyes are very effective in this piece.
Maybe a hint of highlights on the eyes and nose would give them some more depth.
Nice work!

Another display of beautiful colors; very vivid and unique! They give him a real personality!
You've done an excellent job on the proportions as well.
I think the right eye should be darkend slightly; it looks rather washed out.
Maybe a background of some kind will give it a nice look

I don't usually do animals.. in fact, this is probably only the second or third animal I've ever done. I once did Koko the gorilla that they taught sign languate... but other than that I don't remember any.. I've never thought that I could do them... but I like this one.
Thanks Dave.

Thanks - Just thought I'd try some dry painting with the watercolour - worked better than I expected. I'm going to try and work out a bigger, or at least more formal, painting to do using this technique.

Hi, excuse me if my post appears twice, new here, trying to figure it out. My name is Michelle, and I just saw this thread - perfect timing, as I just completed an oil painting of Jekyll, one of our "babies". It's 11 x14. I told Jekyll's story in the project gallery. He has a brother,Hekyll, and I will paint him in January. Looking forward to seeing all the wonderful dog paintings on this thread! It has crossed my mind that dogs may secretly be our guardian angels...;)

What a great site this is! Glad to have discovered it...although I suspect it will diminish my actual painting time:rolleyes:

What a BEAUTIFUL job! Very soulful eyes. And you can almost feel his wet nose! You didnt say what medium you did this in. Pastels? Oils? Again awesome job. Robin

This is something I just did from an old "how-to" book on painting dogs. The author didn't provide enough painting instruction, so I had a teacher help me out a little.

What a lovely painting of a Cairn. I have a Cairn who is 16 the end of this month. This painting has caught the typical Cairn expression.

I wasn't sure this is the right place to post this. I'm a glass artist who specializes in sculpting miniature portraits of dog heads from molten glass. I was just featured by www.beadingtimes.com (http://www.beadingtimes.com) as their "Artist of the Month."

This is a picture of one of my favorite pieces. The glass dog is approximately 1" tall.

Wow Vicki, a beautiful piece of art!
You would probably have got more comments if you'd place your thread in the main page of the Forum.

Hi, I'm new, and was wondering why photos aren't posted here as they are in other fora, but instead, there is a note such as "Regarding this entry --> http://www.wetcanvas.com//Community/...entry_id=98002"
Where is a poster supposed to put their photos?

Regarding the questions about posting; If you choose the "go advanced" posting option, you can type in your message and then go to the tool bar on top and click on the yellow box with the mountain outline on it and it will give you the option of posting a photo. This photo will have be properly sized so that the resolution will not exceed a specified size. ( 800x600 which I accomplish by first sending it in an email to myself and when the option for size is displayed, I use the "small option" and then drag it out of the e-mail and onto the desktop then I follow the instruction on this program (which I found to be fairly simple) and then you can post the photo. It will not work if the image is too large. If this doesn't help, let me know and I can contact you more directly.

The question was not about HOW to post, but, "
why [aren't] photos aren't posted here as they are in other fora, but instead, there is a note such as "Regarding this entry --> http://www.wetcanvas.com//Community/...entry_id=98002"
What is the note about, if, as you say, post them --here, in this thread, I suppose--and they show up here, but numerous times there is and WHY is there the note, "Regarding this entry --> http://www.wetcanvas.com//Community/...entry_id=98002" , such as in post 77, it says, "

Sorry ntl,

I'm still not quite sure about the question so I'll let someone else who has better understanding of what the problem is answer the questions.

Hi everyone - As some of these Projects have been running a very long time, I hadnt checked this thread lately. For instance this Dogs, dogs, dogs Project was begun in 2004. It has an unlimited time frame, so as long as members are still posting in it to keep it active, thats ok.

Ntl - is asking the question "where to post her photos of paintings".
THIS PROJECT AREA, IS FOR THOSE MEMBERS WHO HAVE SIGNED UP FOR THE PROJECT "DOGS, DOGS, DOGS", and any other Projects that have been approved by Admin.
Anyone who HASNT signed for that Project can post their photos of their paintings in the list on the main page .
I hope that clears up any misunderstanding about where to post?

Also, for those new members having problems posting their paintings: if you go to the Welcome to this Forum thread (it is a Sticky at the top of the Forum Page) you will find info there about how to post your images.

Hi everyone - I'm closing this Project Thread "Dogs, dogs, dogs" as it's a very old Project and was begun away back in 2004.
