I have decided to submit two watercolor landscapes to the International Artist magazine competition. I have three weeks to get the entries in. My question is this: Which of the selections do you think would have a better chance to win?

Winter Gate (small 10" x 7")

Winter Gate Large (26" x 41"):

Far Horizon (35" x 43"):

Farmyard (12" x 18"):

Bev, to me, #1 is perfection! :D

10-24-2004, 02:29 PM
thanks Lyn!....I did not see a size limit on the entry form....so I guess this small one is ok.

10-24-2004, 02:50 PM
Number one is my choice too......it's perfect.......good luck

You are sending in two right? I would chose Winter Gate - small and Farmyard, they are both my favs! :)

10-24-2004, 03:26 PM
If it was me I would send in the first 2.

My choices are:

Winter Gate (large) I really like the posts and the rusty colours contrsting with the blue in the snow.

Far Horizons I like the bright palette here and the distance you created.

Bev, to me, #1 is perfection! :D

Truly beautiful!

And I love the innovative way you painted the field in Farmyard...Good luck ...you have wonderful options.

#1 is MY favorite......so lovely.
Really tough choce to make as they are all winners in my book.

BEST OF LUCK

No 1 top of my poll. ........

........farmyard would be second for its dramatic originality............ if you were just to add something to soften the hard line that runs through the middle of the pic :wink2:

10-24-2004, 04:25 PM
Number ONE.

I actually left my chair and picked my choice at one meter's distance :wink2:

10-24-2004, 05:22 PM
Instant decision - # 1, I didn't actually vote for the second one but if you are submitting two # 4 is my second choice!

thanks everyone!! I am getting an idea for what I will do. I appreciate the feedback.

Boy, what a tough choice!!!
My first choice would be Gate #2(large size)--although I like the color of the snow better in the smaller version;
My second choice would be Farmhouse--love the reflections!

I think they are ALL fantastic; love the distance created in the "Far Horizon" painting and the color--the smaller version of the "gate" has a wonderful looseness to it; as I said before--love the color of the snow-- also, love the gate in this one also.

I can only HOPE that I get this good someday!!! I know...practice, practice, practice!!!!

Good Luck to you(I was also thinking about entering one of these competitions--love International Artist magazine; not sure I'm ready for it yet....esp. after seeing your work).

Bev, since you can submit two, I voted for both gates - they're different enough to be judged seperately, and both drop-dead gorgeous!

10-24-2004, 10:44 PM
Thank you Michele....I do not know if they are good enough for the competition...but I will never know unless I try. *LOL* I am still practicing all the time. I try to paint at least one watercolor a day.

Thanks CJ....do you think they are different enough? It only costs $7.00 to enter. I will do the photos and slides of the painting..myself....I hope.

One and two are my favorites- I particularly like the appearance of the snow in #2, seems so fluffy.

The first holds together best for me, I am attracted to the leaning Pillars. You are drawn inside them,
Good luck

I voted for number 2. I like both versions of the gates but the warmth in the sky in number 2 and the larger size made it my first choice.

Jenoir, Juneto, and Gail....thank you for your input!!

I always wonder what exactly will the "judges" be looking for in a painting.

I am sooooo addicted to landcapes. I just can't get enough of them.

All 4 are very good  , but the farmhouse #4 is my favorite, followed by #1.

When I looked at the poll I thought it was for a painting we where going to do not ones that had been done. Duh blond of me. I like #1 please take my vote out of the none of the above box. Teach me not to read down before acting.

I'm coming in a bit late on this, but my votes go for...

#1 - I like the darker tree trunks on this one compared to the larger version

#4 - Really striking foreground, with it's hard edges in center and left and the texture in lower right

Good luck!

#1 is my pick
Love the complete unity and harmony

Hi Bev,

Just found your Poll and voted for #2, the large version of the gate, and #4, the farm.

Those two seem to be a little more original and dramatic to me than the others.

Love the footprints in the snow leading up to and through the gate and the glow in the stone pillars and beyond the fence.

The reflection of the house in the puddled water in the plowed field is terrific and the bold diagonal browns of the dirt rows is powerful.

Have you gone to their website and looked at past winners? That might also help you make your decision.

Good luck with whichever ones you select.

Bonnie...so am I!! I love landscapes.

Dave and Rod...thank you both for helping me out!

Sylvia...thank you. I have been watching what is winning (in the past). I might at least have a shot at it. They seem to like traditional works.

Hi Bev... I'm always running late... I voted for #2 and #4... I love the warmth of the sky against the cool snow... and the trees in your larger version do not seem to be so imposing... The furroughs in #4 are striking and unusually done...

Wishing you the best of luck!!!

LOVE number one!

10-26-2004, 10:12 AM
CharM...thank you for your comments! I did the second painting as a WIP a year ago. *LOL* It was freaky...because it was my first HUGE painting.

thanks nnelson... :)

While they might all four be accepted, I'd stop and look longest at #1.

Right on, Bev.

Thank you Pars...I believe #1 will be one of the entries.
