I need some other artist ideas on an upcoming lesson I am gonna do with my 8th graders.
We are going to make a plate out of clay and then build onto the plate. They can build anything from a face to a fish. I have an example that I will post as soon as I can get a picture made.

You could tumble some broken glass to remove the sharpe edges and the kids could embed them in the wet clay, cut shapes out for negative space, see what stuff they can come up with to make different textures...
If I think of any more I'll post again.

I wish I could tell you from experience, but I've seen the results and read about it. Yes you fire the clay with the glass in it. I couldn't find a difinitive melting temp for glass but some of the info mentioned 2400 degrees F and 1500 degrees C. I think you should try it and then you can tell me what happens. http://www.wetcanvas.com/ubb/wink.gif

I cannot find any info on firing glass and clay together, and I tried for about 20 minutes. I read of this in an article about an Arizona vessel artist that fired her works with broken glass and wire imbedded in them which represented how tough life was or something like that. She had won an award at the Little Feats exhibit. I am curious enough now to do a little experiment of my own and although it may be to late for your class, I'll let you what happens in about a week.
Thanks for the compliments on the sculptures.

do you want just ideas in relation to this project or other ideas for after this project too? I don't teach younger kids, so I am not sure how helpful I will be, but I can try! http://www.wetcanvas.com/ubb/wink.gif

I am looking for any ideas that would make clay more interesting and fun... I have a kiln and fire to cone .05
I still have not ordered any glaze and may just go with a clear.. as I have to buy a lot for a cheap price...so I need ideas to make the piece interesting without putting a lot of money into it.

Hi, I am probably too late to answer this question. But, you cannot fire clay and pieces of glass together. The COE [Expansion Rate] is too differant. The glass will crack. Although you can prefire the clay to bisque, put crushed glass into any relief designs that you have made, then fire. The glass will have a crackle effect to it, but it can look effective.
Good luck,
