Hello, all!
I have been trying to figure this out for a long time, and JUST realized I could ask all of you!! (DUH)
I was wondering why there aren't any other colors of goldstone available to us.....other than the gold, the green, the blue? I have seen several other colors in cabochon form; one was a really pretty pale green....almost a seafoam. And one was a lavender! A GORGEOUS lavender! Kind of the color of Bullseye Neo-Lavender in rod form. So, if they can make it, why can't we have it?!
Just wondering....

Well, if it is a cabochon with a glass matrix you can always try pulling stringer from it & see what you get.
I haven't seen anything like this in slabs but maybe someone else has?

I sometimes get odd colors in cutting rough. Most memerable was some goldstone that came in red, and some blue goldstone that showed up purple. I have some wonderful rich emerald green that shatters with every glass I try it with. melt a blob, encase pull a stringer and watch as it just pops into tiny chunks- and when I look they have split all apart. :( Have found that to be the case fairly often when my cutting rough is really off colorwise. and sometimes thats the case when it is the standard color. <shrug> but the peices left over from cutting cabs are always worth trying to pull rather than throwing out. ;)

Wish I could cut cabs!!
The ones that I saw were in a rock shop in Ames, Iowa. The owner said that he had had them for years. He was asking $30.00 a piece for them, and they were only about 20 x 30 cabs; a bit rich for my blood at the time. Although I am kicking my a$$ now for not buying them. Bet they aren't there anymore, either! :( Hmmm....wonder if I could find his number....

When you pull your goldstone stringers, try encasing them with color instead of clear. Encasing with black will give you purple :-) Tres purty!

Try encasing goldstone with rubino, yum!

 !! I never would have considered encasing my goldstone stringer with BLACK!! COOL!! Wish I didn't have to go to work today.......
I have experimented a bit with some transparents, including the rubino, (which IS yummy!) and I guess I forgot that the Black is actually a transparent, too!
Ok, what others? We've had black and rubino mentioned, what other colors are really good?

I just got almost two pounds of brown? regular goldstone on E bay. I look under , Goldstone chunks, or , Goldstone slabs. The blue I mix with the dark trans blue (comes out really nice) on a black center.encased with clear .The green is different seems to crack into sharp slivers more , haven't really used much of the green.
Have fun Melt on Tom

I got mine from Color-Wright. Here is a link to the slabs they sell http://www.greatslabs.com/slabs_goldstone.shtml and they also have it in large chunks http://www.greatrough.com/rough_goldstone_red.shtml I purchased the chunks and put them in the kiln when it was ramping up. I pulled them out at apx 300-400 deg F, I really dont rember. and dropped them into a metal bucket filled with ice water. I still ended up with large chunks that I will have to break up latter. PS encasing the gold with red transparent gives a beautiful ruby look.

the "red" and blue from Color-Wright work well with moretti. the green does not. or at least does not for me. Its also harder to cab then the other two colors. <shrug> The blue is a tiny bit trickier then the "red" it sometimes doesn't take well to being en-cased with clear. otherwise they are a great source for lampworking. Also nice people. ;)

If you have a rock shop near by go take a peek! Mine sometimes has some great colors! Not cheap but I think I paid like 10. a pound so much better than 30 for a cab!
Hugs Robin
When I took Ofilia's class, we mixed the goldstone with the transparent color. It didn't give the same intense sarkle as the just encased, but another option for colors. I did encase some goldstone with transparent red Moretti. It looked great sitting there, but by the time it was all melted into the bead, looked all scummy. Stupid HH.

Goldstone is best worked with an oxidizing flame, which is impossible on a Hot Head torch. Nevertheless, I had great success with it when I worked on a HH. Just make sure that you turn your HH down and encase the goldstone to prevent reduction.

Thanks, yup I know. The problem I have is the transparent red and the HH. The red tends to scum up with extra heat. No problems with the goldstone here. I was just complaining about that silly red. So pretty, yet so irritating.
