A new project has been announced in the WetCanvas! project system!

Title: Secret Santa Sketchbook
Project Leader: sassybird
Relative Difficulty: Medium
Type Restrictions: Other
Medium: Any Medium
Subject: Other
Days open for signups: 10
Maximum participants allowed: 20

Description:

With the holidays coming up a Secret Santa is appropriate. For this Secret Santa Exchange sketchbooks will be the focus.

All sketchbooks should hold at least 50 pages, that would be 25 pages doubled.

Anything can be used to bind and decorate the book.

All books should be completed by Dec 1st in order to give time for shipping.

Once you receive the name of the person you are going to be sending your book too try to learn a little about the person to make the sketchbook personal.

The books are to be posted by the person that received them, identifying their Secret Santa.

Additional Information:

For more information on the project: Click here! (http://www.wetcanvas.com//Community/Projects/index.php?cmd=view_details&proj_id=772)

Remember, in order to help keep the discussions on projects organized, you should post your questions, suggestions, and comments on submitted work here in this thread. By doing this, we allow other non-project efforts to not get \"pushed down\" by a swarm of project-related threads.

I forgot to mention that you should pm me your address when you sign up for the project.

Just a note to remind everyone that if you commit to this project you must complete it or the person your are given to create a sketchbook for will be left with no gift, and that is not fair. So think hard before you commit to the project.

Just to clarify, are the books to be completely hand made or can you just decorate the covers ?

Li

You can decorate the covers of ready made books.

This is a wonderful project Sassy but I don't think I can make it this time and you are right in saying we should think carefully about it. Take care!

Sorry, my brain is still on vacation. Just to make sure I'm straight on this--we would decorate the covers of a blank sketchbook to send to someone and someone would do the same for us? Making sure I'm not supposed to fill a sketchbook and send my artwork to someone else. The first option--I could do, the other, I couldn't. Size guidelines? Thanks for your patience--My brain is at the shore, my body is in a valley and it's raining.

No size limit except it should have at least 50 pages. You can decorate a ready made book, or make a sketchbook from scratch. Anything you want to do. It is blank books we will be sending each other.

Come on folks. This is an easy project. Just decorate a ready made sketchbook, or if you are so inclined make one yourself.

I already ordered a book and have some ideas. But we NEED MORE PEOPLE !!!!!

C'MON ALL YOU MIXED MEDIA GENIUS' ! We know you all have the skills. Jump in ! It's so great to recieve gifts from your fellow WCer's. I have a wall of WC gifts and treasure them all.

It doesn't have to be complicated, just something from your own hands.

I'm excited about this project. I looked at sketchbooks yesterday but I couldn't remember if there was a size dimension or not so I decided to hold off a bit.

Only 5 more days for signups.

No size limit Penny. Keep in mind the weight as there are international participants and postage can vary tho I have never had a problem.
I ordered a book today. No idea what I'll be doing yet.

It will be nice to get a personal art gift for a change. I love my family to pieces and they don't understand my needs but you would think at the least a gift certificate to one of my art supply stores or at the least a colored pencil in my stocking lol. Your hubby is such a sweetie. I'm refraining from coming up with ideas until I know who this is for. It's hard though.

CaishaRose

I'm looking forward to this. I've only ever decorated my own sketchbooks. It will be nice to do one for someone else for a change... And it will be cool to get one in return. ;) I'm waiting to see who I'm making one for until I start coming up with ideas. This is really a fun idea, I hope we get some more participants.

It's very old fashioned looking, I love the antiqued look. You will inspire us to all get started. I am patiently waiting for the book I ordered to arrive so I can get started.

Hi Caisha ! Can't wait to see what you do. Love your noucturnal landscapes btw.

Kali, you are as prolific as ever and they are all great. I wish I had your energy !

I can't wait until we find out who we are sending to so I can customize my sketchbook ! I received mine in the mail today and am just waiting to see who I'm sending it too. Okay, I admit that I already chopped it into sections, waiting...who ?

:D I'm glad I'm not the only one. At the beginning of this year, I finally decided it was time for a hard-bound sketchbook instead of those glorified notebooks I'd always used through school. I've found that the hard-bound ones last a lot longer. :p

I bought a spiral bound sketchbook from Dick Blick ( the nearest art store to me is 200 miles away. LOL. ) I am taking it apart so I can make my own binding. I am waiting to find out who my recipient is before I start. I've never made a binding before so I looked up some totorials on line. Hope it works !

Just a thought---I would like to post a little information about me here in the thread to simplify when we get our assignments. I'm newish to W/C and could take a whole month to find the information I want about my recipient so ...what if we give a bit of a cheat sheet here?

I'm still trying to find a sketch book that will help me get into the daily sketchbook habit. I have background in crafting, education in healthcare, and require art (hobby so far) for my sanity. I am both highly organized and disorganized--meaning if I do it, I want it done properly. If I can't do it properly, I tend to not do it. I really want to master watercolors so most of my recent efforts have been there, or in trying to improve my drawing skills. I also work in acrylics, primarily tube acrylics, although I have just discovered fluids and I think I'm going to love them. Have some caseins and watersoluble oils to work with later when I have my "studio" (space in the family room) set up. I'm a lefty, so I sometimes sketch from the back of the book or even upside down to work around the binding. Haven't tried pastels or charcoals enough due to this. Crafty--I knit, crochet a little, decorative painting and such, beading jewelry, and scrapbook journaling, my current love. Maybe this helps more than my bio.

Hi Rainbow,

We who have been in so many projects together and know each others styles do tend to forget that new comers have no idea who we are. It's a good idea to set some stats down. I would never have thought of designing the sketchbooks back to front for a left handed person but that makes sense.

I am both highly organized and disorganized--meaning if I do it, I want it done properly. If I can't do it properly, I tend to not do it. .

I am hoping that you are fairly young and haven't yet learned all of the down sides to being a perfectionist ! LOL. You will miss a world of opportunity if you only try things you " can do properly." I am lousy at so many things. I've participated in projects here in mediums I've never done before ( and had no right to be in ) and I was horrible ! LOL. Really bad but I don't regret a single experience. How can you ever discover your potential if you don't take risks ? Who's grading you ? Jump in. Make mistakes. Get embarrassed. Make friends. Laugh at your weaknesses. It makes for a full life !

If you want to find out a little about the person you get, click on their name and view the user profile. You can see their bio's, threads they've started and project entries.

For me....only thing I don't want on my sketchbook is leather.

Can't wait to see your work. I like your nocturnal paintings very much.

Li

10-31-2004, 11:09 PM
Thank you, lisilk. I like to think of myself as young but I often feel like the Garth Brooks song, "I'm much too young to feel this d old." I'm working on the perfectionism as it has caused me to let my weight get out of control (but I AM working on it now) and my house is ATROCIOUS, but that begins again this week.

I've signed up for some projects and haven't gotten to them just yet. I think that is a great idea, especially for someone who is doing self-study now. I am excited about them, just haven't completed them yet.

Thanks also for the compliment on the nocturnal paintings. To date, I think I have been most pleased with them as they have come closest to my vision. I've got to do another (or two) for a project. (I do have something in mind, Alan.).

Thanks for the tips on the bios. I think I found them once but...I'm still getting used to finding things again. I would lose my brain, if it wasn't trapped in my head. Now, where did I leave my head? LOL

Linda, how did you fold the edges so neat and clean?

After I got the corners lined up I gently pressed a crease with the back of my thumbnail then used this gizmo to get a nice sharp crease.

http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/20-Nov-2004/1471-tool.jpg

It is plastic and is 1" wide and 3" long.
I don't know what it is but I got it in the mail years ago in a sample craft kit.
A plastic cooking spoon works well also, just don't use anything metal as it will mark the paper.

Sara, I'm so glad you liked it. I was in such a rush that day to mail it out I forgot to enclose a note. You draw such wonderful birds and so many of them that I wanted to make a bird friendly atmosphere hence the bark, string and feathers. I also notice that you signed up for the 365 drawing project so I wanted to give you a sketchbook with as many sheets as possible. :cat:

I'm so glad you like it! Actually, I didn't look up old posts, I looked at your website then decorated it in a nature-y style. It was something I'd like to use so I hoped it would appeal to you as well. I'm so happy that you like it!

I didn't post any pics, so, if possible, you might want to take a pic before you rewrap it...

Oh, BTW, as I said in the note, if it stinks a little from the fixative I used, just air it out. I went a little overkill on the tape and packaging because I knew it would have a long trip ahead and didn't want it to be damaged or get wet, so it was pretty sealed.

I was just thinking about it last night wondering when you'd receive it. I'm pleased you got it to cheer your up after a tough day at work. :)

Hi Everyone. Don't forget, the person who recieves the journal should post pictures in the " Finished" gallery of the project and say who the sketchbook was from. I want to see all of these sketchbooks that are coming in !

I learned a lot about what not to do on mine. LOL.

I forgot that I have to post as the reciever, do that on the weekend , when I have daylight to do photos. My camera is not the best one doing photos with flash and during the week I go out of the house and it is dark and when I come back it's also dark :crying: ...
On saturday I guess.

Oh dear, which snake??????????
Eeeks, I think it was probably from Gaia, my boa constrictor - either her or, our pine snake Tree.

One of those two anyways.

We do ahve 21 so, it's hard to keep track lol.

All of the sketchbooks are so wonderful and unique. ( Of couse, Gudruns is my fav. since it's all mine ! :D )

My apologies to my recipient. Mine is finally finished and will go in the mail Monday. My studio is completely packed up and empty now, boxes ready for shipping to Fla. Seems so sad. LOL. To finish up the sketchbook, I had to keep searching through boxes for finishing touches. LOL. What a mess. I will send it priority so it should be recieved by Wed. or Thurs.

Kali, thanks for posting this. My house is insane today! I love it and I love this project. It's nice to have something that is "mine" that was thought out just for "me". I think I'm going to take my sketchbook into a corner somewhere and go draw myself out of my frustrations :cat: Thanks again Kali

PS. For future reference when did you mail it? I received it Friday (yesterday). Mailing can be so weird. I can mail Mexico in the same amount of time and money as it takes for me to mail to California. Go figure.

I'm so glad you like it, Kali! It feels great to know it brought you some happiness after a tough day!

And, it's your sketchbook so you can use it how you like, but just thought I'd mention that when I decorated it, this side here is supposed to be the front and the other is supposed to be the back. If you look inside, the wires on the spiral binding are different on one side than on the other and the key was hanging out the bottom... But use it in whatever way appeals to you. I have a sketchbook like it, though, and I like keeping the wires from the binding at the back fo the book... a personal preference, though. I'm soooo happy you're happy with it!!! :D

I just posted the pic of my beautiful book I recieved last week from Penny. I have had it out on my coffee table since the day it arrived. Everyone who sees it admires it. It is so perfect for me. It has been like a little walk in the woods this past week and I have so needed that. I swear I think everyone in the state with even a mild touch of arthritis is having a joint replaced this month. And I have a Christmas commission still in its infancy on my easel (YIKES!)
Anyway, thanks Sassy for this project and thanks to Penny for my beautiful sketch book. Have a Merry Holiday Season everyone!

Sara, LOL, I have TWO commissions yet to finish and mail next week. Neither of them are started yet.

A bit of history for you. The bark and the feather at the lower right hand corner were collected on various camping trips in VT. Here I was dead tired taking a break on a mountain trail with my boys and I look down and see this delicate little feather. I considered it a gift and carfully put it away in my pack. The bark, that's another story... I don't take bark of living trees I wait for it to peel. My boys were ahead of me and I see a tree fallen and well, went off of the trail to get as much bark as I could. Needless to say with the dog twisting me around and being so intent on getting the bark, when I was done and looked towards the trail I couldn't find it. Thank god for a good sence of direction or I would have still been lost in the woods today.

I'm so glad you like it and may it be a happy home for your beautiful birds. I tried to include everything they would need to nest. :cat:

I received my beautiful sketchbook today! It was even wrapped... but I unwrapped it and it is gorgeous!!!

Thanks so much, Li! It's perfect for me!   ...Sorry I peeked. I figured the odds were it wouldn't be for me. :o I'd make a bad gambler, I guess. I was surprised when I opened it to see all of the neat finishing touches you put on it! And, I seriously doubt photos or scans will do it justice, but I'll post pics tomorrow when I have the daylight to photograph it.

Thanks, Li!!! :D  :p I love it!!!!

Penny220
12-15-2004, 08:47 PM
I soaked it in bleach water to remove any algea (sp), layed flat and finished by pressing it with a steam iron. I put everything together using Golden Gel Medium and I paid extra attention to the edges so they wouldn't get hooked on something and peel up. White birch bark is very thin and parchement like so it's pretty easy to work with. :cat:

Thank you Gudrun and Penny. Yes Jennifer, the flower is a very much reduced print of a pastel piece I did. I was going to try to do an original for you but by the time I finished, the studio was empty. LOL.

This was a good project for me, very out of my element ( thanks Charissa ! ) I learned a lot....esp. about how much I DON'T know about book making and book binding ! LOL. I really want to try more once we are settled. ( Only one more week before we pull the computer cord and start the long drive. Yea ! Hopefully you will hear from me again come late Jan./ early Feb.)

I hope you all have wonderful holidays !

I was so thrilled to receive my sketchbook today!
Sara did a wonderful job at making this truly personal for me.
She wrote that her design was inspired from an aerial view of my home I had posted on WC awhile back. The materials she used were inspired by nature as she knew that I enjoy the outdoors. Her colours are those of autumn which is so beautiful in Virginia. And finally the gold represents our home where everything comes together.
I believe this is one of the loveliest presents I have ever received and it will be well cherished.

Thank You Sara

It's a beautiful piece, Li. You didn't get time to do an original pastel, but I got one of your encaustics instead! :p I've never used encaustics, but after seeing what you've done with them, I might just hafta give them a try!

Thanks so much again, Li. I'll treasure this sketchbook for years to come! Happy holidays and have a safe trip! Peace!

Wanted to sincerely apologize to Gudrun about the assembly problem from the sketchbook I sent. I had pressed it to help everything lie flat and it was sticking when I mailed it. I'm really sorry as I know it must have been a great disappointment. Am trying to think of a way to make up for it. Will ask Santa to be extra nice to you until then.
