A new project has been announced in the WetCanvas! project system!

Title: Spring Down Under, Fall Up Top
Project Leader: Jakeally
Relative Difficulty: Irrelevant
Type Restrictions: Any Type
Medium: Acrylic paints
Subject: Not Applicable
Days open for signups: 14
Maximum participants allowed: Unlimited

Description:

Announcing our new Monthly Acrylic Project.
In order to get this 'off the ground', the forum team will be setting the first couple of projects for you.

To reflect the World Wide nature of the forum, the first theme is
Fall Up Top, Spring Down Under.

For those who prefer to work from photographic references some have been provided from the Reference Image Library.
Painters who prefer to work from life, or who would like the challenge of doing so, please select your own group of objects or image, indoors or out, illustrating the theme from your own part of the world. Please submit new work only, done for this project.

Let's respond to the season, paint and have fun!

This project has been brought to you by Charlie's Mum but due to some complications in the system we have had to publish under my name.

Additional Information:

For more information on the project: Click here! (http://www.wetcanvas.com//Community/Projects/index.php?cmd=view_details&proj_id=768)

Remember, in order to help keep the discussions on projects organized, you should post your questions, suggestions, and comments on submitted work here in this thread. By doing this, we allow other non-project efforts to not get "pushed down" by a swarm of project-related threads.

Hi Mystfy - thanks for signing up!
There is a time limit for signing - the project detail page should say - but I believe it's open-ended for entry because, as I understand all the info, these are for all eternity!!!!!!
The idea for this forum, is to have a monthly project - does that explain? The next one is November, but as we're just getting this of the ground, this one has only two weeks. Clear as mud eh????? :D

Hi Maureen

I've been lurking  have saved some WDE images for the future, cos I've been a bit busy lately :D

Did do some "breaking waves" & "fog" pics over in the Marine forum :)

Anyway, I've broken out the acrylics [not used for some time, I may tell you] & made a start on an Autumn/Fall scene!

The first time I saw one I couldn't believe my eyes - a flash of red in the bushes!

This is coming along well, his colours go with the Fall theme nicely !

We see our cardinals here more in the fall and winter because the pairs are not so busy raising 3 sets of babies as they are in spring or summer. They are beautiful, aren't they?

This is 12"x16" on canvas board.

Thank you Maureen - still at the very scrappy stage, I hope to find time to do more before the next WDE. I haddn't realised because of computer probs that you'd commented. :)

Jo and Nina - you're way ahead of me already and looking very good.

Question - can we do a couple i.e. one of the supplied ref images say and one of our own interpretation?
If yes do we post on same thread or do we start another in the autumn folder?

Thanks

Christine, this is a beautiful start! I hope you are going to have time to work on iit.

Living alone has its advantages; when I am painting, I don't do housework. When I finish a painting, I take some time off and clean house and do laundry. The pups don't care as long as I feed them and talk to them occasionally!

Thanks, Maureen, for the welcome & you're right about the colors! I've got fall & spring with both subject matter & color palette. The lake wasn't a steely blue or cobalt blue so I kept it as I saw it . . . I liked the yellow against the thalo-y blue of the lake. I'm still finding it interesting using acrylics - color seems too strident or dull & chalky - trying to find the balance.

OK you have no aspens in the NE but you sure have the other color foliage. . . the knock your eyes out color! In Calif. we usually have to go above 7,000 - 8,000 ft. to find aspen growing in the wild. This year they were outstanding - yellows, golds tingeing to orange.

thanks again.

I think this'd be a unique feature for a project - closeup of the area you want others to see. I'm usually not completely satisfied with my dig. camera & Photoshop images as I see them posted later. The closeup might give a better idea of shadows, brushwork, details, whatever.

Thru a happy accident, maybe a great idea.

Hi - The best way to add a nice juicy orange colour is start with a smidgen of cad red and add cad yellow until you get the shade you like. The more cad yellow you add you will be amazed at the range of oranges you get. You can then vary this by adding a tiny tiny bit of burnt umber to make a shade colour. Important when mixing orange I've found make sure your brush is scrupulously clean and so is the water used to let down the paint. I bet you this will work here. :D

Beautiful bird, I am a bird lover, we dont have any that look like your little fellow here. Its nice to see the wildlife deplicted this way, it gives you a real feel for what they look like, when you have no way of seeing them in real life.

I really like the background change, it really sets this painting off. :D

This looks like a very beautiful place to sit and just think. I am in Australia and we have some beautiful sights here, this one your have painted looks breathtaking. I have a feeling that you can feel alot of energy in a place like this, the feeling of being small is what I Get with viewing this. Like this place is so huge, and we are so small. Thank you, Char! Your painting is looking good!

I have finished this painting if you want to look in the Browse the Gallery Exhibits (finished works) to see how it turned out. I'm fairly pleased with it, and thinking about doing another bird in its local habitat. Something colorful, maybe a bluejay.

Hi Mystfy......Goldie (Christine) told you how to make orange.....I'll add a little more:

Do a test sheet of colours - a colour chart - and label each colour e.g, lay a dab of each yellow you have along the top and a dab of each red down the side........mix a little of the first yellow and the first red, try equal amounts at first and place it under the yellow, along from the red. Then the first yellow and the second red.....and so on.
Do this with each pairing and study the results.

You'll have a variety of different oranges.

Always start with the weaker colour - ie yellow - and add the stronger. This allows you to strengthen the colour without waste!

To tone down the colour, add a little of its opposite (orange/blue), or to get an autumnal colour try some green......then be a devil and experiment with other colours too. ALWAYS make a note of what you've done!

Colour mixing is one of the great joys of painting (IMHO)! Your charts will be an invaluable reference in future!

MyBubbleWall - I'm panicking too - I did collect all my stuff from the hedgerows this morning and I've got a base coat on the surface.......tomorrow, please God, tomorrow...........!!!! :D

Char, thanks for your comments. I am trying to paint more 'feelings', less realism. Yes, this is a grand place - 8,000 ' (2440 m.) altitude with peaks to 10,000' (3050 m.) and the whole landscape was carved by glaciers. One feels very minimal. We've made an annual trip there the last 2 autumns.

You eloquently put into words what I just labeled as 'depth'. Thank you!

Hey Lynne,

I have never been to where you have painted, I could just feel it, from your painting. I was going to use the word depth, but it seems so much more, You have captured the essence of this area very well to be able to feel the enormity of this place by just viewing this painting.
You should be proud of what you accomplished with this. :D

Thank you all for your orange advice, I will be giving it a go later on tonight, I dont seem to have time today to sit and work with it. Will let you know how I go.

Thanks Lynne & Maureen,

Lynne - my smallest brush size is a "0" I bought it specially to do the twiggy bits on the first tree painting I did for this project. :D

I like using a rigger too but only on watercolours, I'm afraid I ruin all the brushes I use on acrylics & so keep 2 sets. Hence I buy cheap nylon ones for acrylics or oils even.

Maureen - I have a frame waiting for the 16" x 12" painting

Nina, you've obviously found a subject that inspires you to do some beautiful work. Thanks for answering my pesky questions, but now I believe I'll also get the twiggy bits brush. :)

I use a synthetic rigger reserved for acrylic painting, I just make sure I rinse it extremely well as soon as possible after I use it for thin lines, signature, etc.
