The International Wetcanvas meet in Montana 2005 is being planned  I and a number of my wetcanvas friends do not have sufficent resources (money, spondulals, beer tokens.) to even contemplate that trip.I am opening this thread purley as a place to post your thoughts /suggestions as to the possibility of 2005 gathering or gatherings this side of the pond.PLEASE USE THIS THREAD TO THINK OUT LOUD :D

Neither do I :crying: :D approximately 4 hour flight to Mondana, 6 hour flight to Britain! That gives you an idea of cost LOL The airport car alone is $ 100 to get to the airport and back.

I will enjoy via the generosity of our phototaking friends :D

Perhaps we should have an ontario meet.

Andy, I'd be interested. It's an easy train ride for me to London, and then a train ride to wherever. If it's easy to get to by train, that's better for me.

I hope that I'd be able to join in, but I'd need plenty of notice and I would only be able to escape for 2 nights, so the closer the better, and easy travel by train is essential! (And cheap, please! Money is always tight with 3 hungry teens  )

(Still hoping for a return Kington trip :D )

If JT is willing, to do again what she did before, then why are we looking for somewhere else?

Kington 05...........The ReUnion.

Spoken by someone who didn't make it last time.

I'm sure the pubs won't mind an annual event.

I'd love to go back to Herefordshire again, and it would be nce to be all together in the same accommodation if possible, but will consider any location.

If I just fill in a bit of background from my point of view. The meet we had at Kington was great and JT allowing her house to be used and abused was very kind of her. The accomadation which was found by Doug and JT was also spot on BUT Kington is not an easy place to get to if your carless ,the rented houses where 10 miles from JT's the people who stayed in or nr JT's found it difficult to socialise in the way they' d have liked to on a couple of nights because of drink driving , on one evening it was near impossible to get an evening meal in Kington and impossible in Pembridge . The pubs did indeed do well but it was two pubs 10 miles apart .The cottages in Pembridge were to far from the pub/ eatery to walk. arrangements had to be constantly made adapted to ensure that none drivers were taxied back and forth the 10 miles to Kington.. All in All in was brilliant but there were things, problems we didn't need , hence the suggestion that we look at other ways of achieving the same result.

I look forward to returning to JT's many times ,but it will be for smaller meetings and just a couple of nights in a hotel in the town center.

My idea for this thread was intended to look at a gathering of maybe 20 people or more with ease of travel playing a part in deciding the location

Some of the Criteria I would like in any choices we make for a large gathering would be (not in any particular order)

easy to get to
able to provide beds without traveling
everyone near to each other so non drivers can visit
able to offer single as well as double rooms
reasonble cost
within walking distance of food and drink
nice to paint
alternatives for non artists
social space for all

Andy I think this is an exellent idea.
I would like to go to Kington again, but it`s also nice to meet in different venues, for different painting trips and evenings out.

I can`t thank Doug and Ruth enough for letting myself and Pat stay with them, if it weren`t for their generousity we would have been in Kington on our own from the Monday onwards.
Which just wouldn`t have been the same.

I`ll never forget our trip to Kington, and I sincerly hope to do it again, but I would also like to try other places too.

Hi

How about renting a Scottish Castle as Kev mentioned, plenty of rooms, space for communal painting, great subjects to paint, hire a minibus for painting expiditions, people can get there by train from all over Europe and Britain...have a look at this link

http://www.ltr.co.uk/properties/scotland

Some of the above are a bit on the expensive side but I have seen Castles and Mansions for rent a around 2750 per week..divide that by say 20 and its not to bad

I only looked at one price, and that was from 200 to 275 per person per night

From my point of view I don`t think thats an option.

I have rented cottages from Welcome Cottages (http://www.welcome2004.co.uk) several times, and always been satisfied.

For a large party for example there are three adjacent barn conversions near Uttoxeter in the Peak District totalling around 50 people reference W7922, W7921, W8968 and W3993. We could have our own get-togethers there.

W7921 costs from 897 for the week i.e. around 50 per person!

This is just an example, I am sure there are others.

http://www.welcomecottages.com/uce/welu?view=details&action=readDetails&cottageId=402387&holidayPark=N&sleeps=20&propertyTypeId=

There are soooo many to choose from - but at the end of the day we will have to decide which area exactly we want to go - though I would still love to stay in a castle - and Henry - that one appeals - especially the fishing bit....lol.

Perhaps we ought to start a poll, or a list of

1. People who would like to come, where and when.

I think September 2005 is a good month for availabilty and cost.

Those interested please pm me and I'll draw up a list of preferrences based on Pat's location. There will be other accommodation in the Kettlewell area.

Nearest station would be Skipton I think.

Its a super area (http://www.yorkshire-dales.com/welcome.html) with loads of easily reached painting spots.

Have six takers so far ....

Andy........ I take all your points.........I guess it was a) because of the expansion to a week b) the expansion in numbers c) when I go on hol I self cater and dont visit pubs or eat out :D

That said Im still very happy for small group weekeds/midweeks here....between Ivy Cott and Bell Cott and Church House we could sleep 12 !!

However.... I think lovely ideas are brewing............

from my point of view.......... I would love to come for a week as long as I could bring the 2 dogs and perhaps Helen as dog sitter ( unless Guilli would like to volunteer :D) so would probably need own small cottage near to the main gang............if thats not possible it would have to be a weekend only but not a shared room ( unless my plastic surgeon would come too   )

My thoughts on offereings so far......

Derbyshire Dales are quite gorgeous...... only visited once and would love to return.......and within easy reach of a number of motorways........

Yorkshire dales I find less interesting ( lived in Hull 3 years so know them better) and a tad too far. ....

Scotland wonderful but much too far............

never got further with girl guide assoc......... will have a go this week between challenges and choral concert rehearsals

DOUG....... please put me on list if theres a suitable one going around :D

will now subscribe to thread

Thank you Yorky. Hello to all

I cant say anything now as I am in very unsettled job and family situation now and I have no idea what will be during next few months and if I will get more holiday's days from my new company.

But must admit that this is for me big temptation ... to see all that lovely people again and have chance to have more fun! Lovely landscape! (and psssst... may be to see Peter again  :D)

But I cant really tell now, if I will be able to come. It's for me too early. I will be able to confirm early after Christmas, when I will know more about my new job, when all will be more still and of course I cant forget financial side of matter as this is for me a bit expensive and I still recover from this year's trip.
As for date. Uf! I will visit this pages regulary and to see what's new. When you deciede, I will try to match date and will see. I was looking that there is a one direct flight to Birmingham with CSA from Prague and than many direct coaches to Derbyshire. If I deciede to come ... it should be separate visit only for this occasion and only for 2-3 days ... may be longer weekend.

... but I really must think about it and count a bit...

There are more to these Get-Togethers than just painting.
Just being there, and getting to meet and converse with so many people that you already know through WC, is a real buzz.
Look at it as a social break rather than a painting break - although some painting DID go on at the last Get-Together.

Hello

Joe.....I never suggested that painting was the only reason for a meeting of people from here, of course I understand that socializing would be high on the agenda in a gathering of similar minded souls

It may sound extruciatingly boring, but I dont drink/smoke, therefore paintng is highest on my list when meeting other Artists

Meeting the members would of course be exciting, there is a lot of life experience amonst this lot to draw on...but next time maybe :)

Thanks for your message

......of course I understand that socializing would be high on the agenda in a gathering of similar minded souls

Henry....... there was an awful lot of socialising went on with neither drink nor smoke involved :D No booze here at Ivy Cottage - though it wasnt actually banned - though we did banish the smokers to the bottom of garden !!........ and I confess I never once went to the pubs in the evening or lunchtime !!! Not once!! Thats how anti-social I was !!!

Im also guessing that next time around there will be more painting as we've all now yacked our heads off. .....and many of us are back into painting again as a result of the weekend in Kington.........and more eagerto get on with it !!

I do so hope you'll make one of our get-togethers one day....... it would be so good to meet up with you...... but if Scotlands a H*ll of a way from England I guess Englands a H*ll of a way from Scotland too...... so I do understand.......

DOUG. .......I only suggested the Oak 'cos of the folk that didnt want to be stuck out in the wilds again - which Im guessing puts the Luntley cottages out of bounds ??? There are self catering places in Kington itself........ but without the medieval charms I thought would appeal to our 'vistors'

should I start another thread for spring? we may get too confised in this one if we're planning two .......... perhaps we need to start two new threads? what do you think ?

Yorky
10-13-2004, 07:26 PM

We all know Prince Charles loves to do watercolours - why dont we drop him a line telling him about the group and how we are looking for somewhere to meet up and paint and wondering if he would like to join us in Scotland and if so could he put us all up at Balmoral Castle - after all its not like he wouldnt have room would it......lol. :p

Just a thought!! :D

Hi

Please don't misunderstand me. I'm not suggesting that you are organizing a booze up :D there's nothing wrong with that in any case, I was just explaining to Joe that I knew there was more to the get togethers than painting..thats all :)
