Here is the latest project that I finished just last night. It is a burgundy leather finish. More subtle then a typical faux leather finish.....

Way cool! How do you do a leather faux finish?

There are a few different ways to do faux finishes, and the methods can also depend on whether you are using oil glazes or water-based glazes.

I prefer water-based glazes, but they do not have as long of an 'open' time to manipulate the glaze as you can with oil. However, clean-up is alot faster, and I don't have to deal with fumes.

This particular finish used a 'burgundy' color base coat. And whenever you are doing faux finishes, you cannot use a 'flat' paint as a base because you wouldn't be able to move the glazes around on top of it....they would just soak right into the basecoat. So you would always want to use an eggshell, satin, or semi-gloss basecoat.

Choose the basecoat according to the type of leather you are doing.....a red oxide for a red leather, a green for green leather, and so on.

Typically, 3 different colored glazes are used on top of the basecoat, usually in browns, blacks, burgundy's...which can also be mixed with browns and blacks. The customer didn't want blacks in this finish, so I had to come up with some more subtle color variations....
