View Full Version : Loosely Stretched Canvas??

I tried stretching my own canvas for the first time today. It came out pretty good for a first attempt but I noticed that it was much looser than my pre-stretched canvases. Can I paint on this or will it have some kind of effect on my painting?

Try soaking the canvas with water, this can tighten the canvas up. If it is still loose it is OK with acrylic as acrylic paint is very flexible. Oils can be a problem with a very flexible support.

Thanks, Marty. I'll see what happens. By the way, I found your article about making a gallery wrap canvas very helpful. Thanks again,

When I stretch my own canvases....I stretch them loosely (you'll need the give)...then I paint them with a mix of one part pva glue and one part water...let it dry and it will tighten....then I paint white gesso over it...sand it back.....gesso again and sand again......I end up with a very nice canvas.

Gesso will also help to shrink the canvas, tightening it up. Here are a couple of threads that you might find interesting about canvas.

If water doesn't tighten it, gesso should. Try a big "X" across the inside also. As a last resort, tap in some some corner wedges to tighten it up. If you used pre-primed canvas, you have may have to get it a little tighter initially than unprimed. Have fun.
