View Full Version : Anyone got a mix for "Gold"..

.. Need to paint a gold amulet on the arm of a nude I'm doing. Can't get a real good natural GOLD colour. The nude is done in burnt umber and raw umber.... Anyone got a "secret" formula..??

Hi Mike, for me the secret of getting gold metal is to closely observe the reflections.these could have all colours from white and yellow to browns black and other hues from the surroundings..
I painted gold with just brown and yellow and it wasn't great..next time I'll do the above and copy from a true reflection..
I know copper has a lot of orange and red tones, silver lots of black blue and grey...
how about trying a greyed lavender grisaille underneath for depth, and glazes over top? especially since your paletee is already the browns and yellow tones..

if you are talking about a "gold" for a skin color, i use golden's green gold with Cadmium Red light, or green gold with Permanent violet dark. (MIX carefully, a little of too much and its mud). sometimes i have to add a tiny bit of either primrose yellow or hansa yellow medium, depending on what i'm doing.

Adding touches of red and green to yellow ochre or raw sienna makes a pretty nice gold color. I use white and the yellow to make the highlights. If you want a look, see the gold lettering here: http://www.wetcanvas.com/forums/showpost.php?p=426452&postcount=1
In my painting it was lettering so it was pretty flat, but for something like jewelry I would use maybe raw umber for the deeper contrast caused by the curves of the metal.

The colors I use are burnt umber or neutral gray no. 5 (depends on the object the gold is reflecting), bronze yellow, yellow oxide (orcher), cad. yellow and white.

I have a bronze yellow(Liquitex) which consists of synthetic iron oxide(PY42) and natural iron oxide(PBR7) which I think could be used, then mixed with something else for the shadows and highlights.

Winsor And Newton has a quinacridone gold (some other manufacturers have it too) I think pigmnent is PO49. It is a pretty good pigment to start from, it does wonders in mixes, too

Thanks everyone for your input.... learned a lot but alas I still haven't got it right. Sooooooo I'm going to find some already mixed.... Atelier have a titanium coated mica paint (Rich Gold) that looks interesting and then I guess one of those metallic gold arylic paints for touching up cars etc.
