I'm not sure if this is going to work. It's the first time I've tried to upload an image. All the digital photos of my paintings have come out much lighter, with a lot less tonal value than the originals.

Your file has no ending....you have to use all the file name and the [img] brackets when you copy and paste.

You have to have a file ending in the image name telling in what format the image is saved, i.e. .jpg (read: point j p g).
Than you can upload the image
Than you copy the line that will be shown you, something like
with http://etc. in between. I can't show you it because you'll only see the broken icon than.
than you paste that line in your posting and we all will be abel to see your image
