The thing I try to do is to get a good flow and interesting balance.
You do that alright, Art Guy, and then some. I have been blown away by these cards since you posted the first one. They truly entertain the eye.

Hi all, I have been soo busy lately.

You know these little cards are actually pieces of art even as tiny as they are. I got to totalling the hours I spend on them are they are a lot. It takes time glazing and glazing and more glazing in layers. Some you can't even tell but its a build up to the finished painting. I average about 3 hours per little painting. This is about what I do on a 11 x 14, well close but I use much bigger brushes.

What is the average time you spend on your art? Or do you all have experience in just wipping them out in record time? I feel if I spend any less time and detail I can't offer them to anyone because they are a part of me. I want to do the best job possible because I have to be satisfied with my efforts and results.

Do you guys feel the same as myself?

Thanks

I have received Gundrun's card, WOW!!!!!!! I love it  Great work.

I have received Miss Pearls 2 leaf tips, a very creative way of embroidery

I have received the Weckster mini mogdolini, awesome.

I have received the beautiful cactus flower from Marianna :D

And my first card was from jakeally

Wow! I think I am going to think up a creative way to display them instead putting them in a book. I have a great idea but will not tell you until I can figure out how I want it to be.

I hope all of you have received mine and you are happy with the quality. I work hard at it and want to offer my best work. It will only help me to become a better artist with my attention to doing my best.

Thank you for allowing me to participate.

Pilan,
I average 3 and a 1/2 hours per piece. (This doesn't take into account drying time between coats of paint...or time spent hunting out plasters for finger pricks.)

Incidentally, I just managed to snap my first needle in half tonight.
I think it had OOS (occupational overuse syndrome).

I think of a piece as finished, when I would personally accept it for a trade happily.
That is, when I can look at it and feel that there has been an effort to create something tasty and unique with a touch of fresh 'parsley' to garnish...

Makes me hungry for more...

I know the system seems quite complicated. and it is. when you explore the project portfolios, there is a option to comment on an entry. when you push 'comment' it will automaticly include the picture you are commenting if you don't erase the few first lines in message-writing box.

I learned to use this by trying, just push every button and see what happens.

I have finally finished my series on trees!

I thought I needed to do some work on different tree techniques, to make different looking trees, and to really LOOK at trees....so, to kill two birds with one stone, I thought what a great idea for ATCs....small format, cool!
I don't know why I picked the number 30, but I did. Those of you who have traded with me will have noticed on the back that I put number so and so out of 30. Which meant I HAD to make 30.....what was I thinking? Needless to say I ran out of ideas, got frustrated and all the rest! I frequently found myself going back to my standard way of painting trees, and had to force myself to stop and make a tree that looked like a real tree!
Anyway, I've finished them, but I haven't posted them yet....I need to photograph them and process them through PHotoshop. So, bear with me I will try to have them up by tomorrow.

Loving every minute!
Terry

I especially like the shoulders and back.
Can I make a suggestion? Ignore or consider at your discretion...d'you think the foot needs a little softening with a rubber on the instep? Just to bring in a feeling of fullness on the heel of the foot and down a mite, where that distinct area of shadow is.
(Mind I say this only because I have chubby feet at present -I am in my third semester, and there aint no angles left on this body...)

Looking forward to seeing more of your style.

 I just received my first ever encaustic ATC's from Gudrun and Jakeally.
They are absolutely FABULOUS!
Even my husband and brother-in-law Alex who were present at the unveiling, paused dinner to seriously admire...being careful to "keep your hands off busters".
This is high praise indeed from two whose idea of art appreciation is drooling over the forks on the other brother's Betty Boop trike.

Thank you and they all arrived safely. :p

This one and Gudrun's flowers on black look SO GOOD.
Don't be put off by the wax/storage thing.

There are ways of safely storing them like using polythene pockets/folders from stationary stores. These don't sweat like ordinary plastic if you do a woopsee and leave them in a warm place.

Kalle,
I have adhered two and three layers of paper/card successfully. I have also used gel medium to fix small acrylic gemstones to cards ( they are about 2-3mm thick.) Also, I recieved a card which has a small, flat starfish fixed to it.
Does this answer your questions?

Hi everyone!
Just thought I'd give you all an update on glues. I know there was a discussion about this near the beginning of the thread. There was talk of rubber cement vs other types of adhesives. At that time I reccommended YES! glue as it does not wrinkle your papers.
Since then I have gotten hold of Jonathan Talbots book and he gives an excellent run down of the various adhesives one can use. Essentially, according to Mr. Talbot, rubber cement will darken and deteriorate the paper. YES glue turns to sugar! It looks like use of acrylic gel medium is about the only truly archival way to adhere artwork. This may or may not be an issue for you all. I probably will go ahead and change to that exclusively just because I'd like to think that what I do will last.

OMG! That is frightning (sp) What does it say about that PVA glue (that is what I think its called anyhow)?

Well at anyrate, do you think we would have problems if we kept them in those plastic sleaves, no matter what? Providing they are archival. I have a rule, that since I can see and admire just fine, the moment I slide them in, im not planning on taking them out for an eternity.

What does it say about that PVA glue
Actually, PVA glue is also reccomended as archival. It is the only one other than Acrylic medium. Interestingly enough there is a question mark beside Elmers glue in the archival column. Over in the text he says that besides medium and PVA that Elmers and, of all things, wheat paste are longer lasting than others. Who wouldda thought?

Amaizing! Wonderful landscape! Well done. I know it is supposed to be there but the river in the background kind of looks like a steal rod. To fix it next time you could put a kink in the river. But other than that you are doing really well.

:music: Oh Happy Day!! :music:

Terry

And everywhere I go I see TSpoon trees! There's an avenue near my house full of them! It's spring here now, so there lots of new green leaves shimmering, just like the card I got from you. Wonderful!

Hello atc members. I'm fairly new to the scene, but have done some trading. It was my intentions to finish my floral series with 2 more images this past weekend, BUT, I've injured my back and can hardly walk, and to add to that I'm on my own, as my husband is in Colorado for another week. This is the first time in a week I've been able to sit in a chair to be able to log onto wc. I have atc on the table to send out, but can't get to the post office. I'm so sorry. :( :o
You would think that I would have all the time in the world to do atc's, but I have no way to get to my studio for more suede board. Now that I'm moving a little I'm going to go ahead and start another series of atc's on bristol, then when I can get to the studio I'll finish my two floral pieces. So please be patient with me, I haven't run out on anyone. DeBee

Well here is my humble contrabution to the ATC gods of WC. I saw this project a while ago and have been waiting to find the time for doing it. Here is Zoe my cat who was yawning/posing for me on my bed. I converted the picture to this great looking black and white, shrunk it down and printed four out on postcard paper. Then I added the music notes with red gel pen making each one an original pice. Hope you like them. They are my first ever ATC's YYYEEAAAAA

Well, we get asian students more...coming over to homestay locally and attend and English Second Language school.
But I do remember when I was in my first full time job post school...seeing these classic / stereotypical tourists walk in.
I was working in retail pharmacy and they had the matching tracksuits in pastel and purple colours, and were fair skinned with florid faces, a little - okay a lot overweight and weighted down with flash cameras suspended from their necks...they thought MY accent was funny. I just wanted them to quiet down.
Since then my work has led me to make many friends cross culturally, and I have some dear friends who are american. We can also understand each other's accents now :)

 Greetings everyone.
I have just posted up about 12 WIP's (works in progress) in the 'studio'.
They are my latest series ; mixed media thumbnail paintings based on the works of some of my favourite classic artists.
They still need to be formated onto an ATC sized base, and I would love your feed back as to how I should do this.
Do you think a mock 'gilt' frame around them would swamp them? Would a plain background on acidfree card stock be better? C&C (comments and criticism) welcomed.
Cheers,

Black Pearl :p

Black Pearl,
I received your ATC cards this morning...and I love them all...they certainly are lovely in person. I was very happy.

I see you sent me lots, and I haven't got around to making any new ones yet that you could choose from (especially since you can't seem to get the feathery ones thru the post).

Wait til you hear my excuse for not making new ATCs.... :D

I have been offered a job in Hamilton, Waikato, North Island, NZ!!

So I am busy trying to arrange passports, flights and so forth.

Its a government (local council) job and so they may pay for my furniture to be taken to NZ....My furniture would be fumigated on arrival...so I may yet get those feathery cards to you if they allow it in my furniture transportation.

Otherwise, I will give you first pick of any new ones (ATC) I make before I travel.

I hope to arrive back in NZ end of November 04. I'm just having a few hiccups with my passport situation...I'm not sure if my passport is suitable for the new electronic systems. Oh boy. Such is life.

Love from,

 Greetings everyone.
I have just posted up about 12 WIP's (works in progress) in the 'studio'.
They are my latest series ; mixed media thumbnail paintings based on the works of some of my favourite classic artists.
They still need to be formated onto an ATC sized base, and I would love your feed back as to how I should do this.
Do you think a mock 'gilt' frame around them would swamp them? Would a plain background on acidfree card stock be better? C&C (comments and criticism) welcomed.
Cheers,

Black Pearl :p

Too late. Thank you if you were pondering this anyway. I've finished them, as hate leaving stuff half done.

Hello atc members. .... I've injured my back and can hardly walk, and to add to that I'm on my own, as my husband is in Colorado for another week. This is the first time in a week I've been able to sit in a chair to be able to log onto wc. I have atc on the table to send out, but can't get to the post office. I'm so sorry. :( :o ....: DeBee

Thinking and praying for your recovery. Take it easy and don't break a leg trying to get to that studio! :D Just relax and heal. I wish I was there to help you out :crying:

Thanks for your comments Amanda and STM.
STM I have a couple of ideas rolling around, but sometimes it takes me months to even touch a bigger canvas.
That is why I am so enjoying these ATC sized works...
Makes me a lot more prolific.
My average larger canvas seems to occur every three months plus and when I do one it's usually an all nighter.

I especially like doing portraiture, usually based on self, since that is all who is around when I get an itch.
But at present I am just wanting to do some larger surreal landscape pieces for my home, to tie in some of the wacky bright colours I painted the walls.
Got hold of some fantastic curtain scraps and getting them joined up to make a large drop. They are giant multi coloured squares of silk. Going for a mexican adobe kind of feel and colour...
(which is ironic when you consider I have never been south of the border, or even in a desert scape)

Hi Avie
This thread does move fast! I tend to write down what number page I last read. I leave it for 2 days and the thread explodes into 6 additional pages! takes me about an hour to read it all. And I love reading it!

 Glad that the powers that be are looking at making ATC's a forum - Great news!

They have been traded but I have done some cards with embroidery and so has Black Pearl. All very different styles of course. Love to see some of yours!

I have traded outside WC on MSN ATC EXCHANGE and MSN ATC ADDICTS. They have different rules but I trade like we do here. It is much easier and I like this style of trading better. They trade "blind" sometimes. EG: They send you cards and you send them cards (same number) and you both get a surprise! I'm doing my first swap like that soon. Scarey Stuff!

No. I am just a closet painter with my work stuck on my walls, or close friends and families walls.
Godzoned is a good friend of mine and got me into ATC's three weeks ago. These are my first submissions anywhere. I have looked on other ATC sites recently, but they don't hold much appeal for me.

Fractals have its roots in the theory about chaos..which is difficult to explain...the roots are also mathematical ones. It's quiet interesting to read that all, but also difficult to understand, even for me and I'm a mathematician from my education. The theory says, that a lot of things in the world are self-similar (may be that's a new englich word, I created that from the german one :) ...That means in simple words:
Look at a cauliflower or a broccoli, they consist of little cauliflower-roses, if you look only at one of this pieces , it looks also like a whole couliflower consisting of littel pieces looking ALSO like cauliflowers....Thats the thing...Mandelbrodt tried to explain, also Julia, both are mathematicians , they created the theory about fractals. If you go deeper into this fractal stuff you will find this names often. Of course you can create formulas to calculate all that points in such a self-similar set, and that's the point coming to this wonderful fractals, you give your computer such a formula and it calculates with a programm, you can change parameters , all the points in calculation get a color, a place onto the screen....a distance from center..the result after the PC is ready is such a fractal....It calculates AND paints the results
So Mathematics and Art is here strongly connected and I can tell you, it's really fun to do that, sometimes the PC is calculating hours...In the past a lot of programmer did programms for this calculation, and today you can download some terrific programms from somewhere or buy it and its not that difficult to use the programm, change paramer and so on....
If you go to this link:

http://www.menschkunst.de/index_artist.php?artist_id=751

that is a gallery with fractals I did years ago....it's german but you see the pictures...

Oh well, that is a difficult field and its difficult to explain in english for me. Hope that helped...

Well I have finally come out of "lurk" mode :-) Absolutely Wonderful work by everyone  I love seeing all the different styles of cards, my own fault I took so long in getting my self sorted that I have missed out on so many beautiful entries so far! :crying: I'm sure there will be many more to come though! :D well done everyone!!
and a huge "thankyou" to Morganna for starting this fantastic project! long may it continue!!
bye for now & happy creating
~June~

:) Hey June! Nice to see you coming around. Take your time, im sure you'll be busting out some cards somtimes. Don't feel bad, im the slowest card creator there is I think. Don't worry about missing out on great cards, the do after all come from the heads of these fine people, So there are more great cards busting out every day it seems. :p Not only that the projects so big that there are great cards that get over looked around here, I've gotten good at rooting them out. LOL, Now if only I was a faster card maker Id snap em up before anyone notices them. LOL

Nice to see you coming out of lurking  The whole project would not be posible without all you fine folk

Black Pear, this was a clever idea! I love that metalic paint. Great card!

Have yall ever figured out why they don't make metailic paint for oils? The way oil paint takes in the light one would think it would look out of this world. I'v had many metalic ideas, but had figured on it that I would be restricted to using the metaics as acryilic. Why is that?

Morgie, how do you find the time to comment on everyones cards like you do? Only reason I'm on now is I'm home "sick" from the office. I'm still doing work stuff on the puter, just doing it at home. Have yall ever figured out why they don't make metailic paint for oils? Did you know that they DO make metallic oil pastels? I saw them at Jerry's the other day. They would probably work fine in conjunction with oil paint because I think you can use paint thinner with them like you can use water with watercolor colored pencils. Even if you chose to use them plain they should be compatible with your oils.
I know what you mean about the wonderful new cards that everyone is posting. It seems like we have a second generation of participants and WOW do they have beautiful stuff. I want, I want, I want, but I don't have anything to trade except one or two sad birds and a number :D Guess I'd better get downstairs tonight and whip up a batch. (Yeah, right. One of those fold out women takes me hours to do.) Anyway:   to all of you who have posted cards and just know that this old slow-poke is champing at the bit to trade for some of them.

Hi Erica,
Yes that kitty comes across as loud, I think we have one in our neighborhood as well. I can hear her when the darn dogs stop barking!!!! :D

Morgie,
Yes this project is starting to occupy more of my subconcious mind. I have some good ideas and look forward to starting some more original handmade cards.

Black Pearl,
Welcome to WC, this place is GREAT!! Where I live is pretty rural and having acess to so many talented artists has kept me inspired for the past couple of years. I have even meet some of them in person!

Debbie,
I got them up in the gallery okay, I got good at that when I did the christmas card project last year! Whew, that one was challenging. I looked at that MSN Exchange and was a little uncomfortabe with not knowing what I was going to get. PLEASE share with us when you recieve your ATC's so we can get an better idea what it is all about.

If I miss anyone who responded to my post I am truly sorry, I am having some time trying to keep up with the speed of this thread... I generally can only check in once a day and I don't want to miss anything!!!!!

ABOUT THIS EVENT

This event, the first of many, is to raise awareness to our expectations in the art world that world peace and plenty for all should be a top, global priority. We are conducting a demonstration by proxy through our dolls being sent in our stead representing our desire for a world at peace and all that this implies and our support to those who are working toward it.

For this first project we are calling on all artists to raise the first non-governmental transnational army for global peace: an army of dolls who shall be sent to hot spots world wide with the message:
"World Peace is Imminent."
It is important to remember that this is not a protest. It is a positive demonstration of good will from the creative community to the rest the world.

Those who create the world are the first to rule it. Let us, The Arts Community worldwide create a world where peace and plenty is the first rule.

P

My way of knowing if people have uploaded new "finished Project" pieces is: I save the Browsing final entries (http://www.wetcanvas.com//Community/Projects/index.php?cmd=browse_final&proj_id=728) page as a single file and compare the windows the next day. :D Pm me if you don't know how to do this and I'll explain step by step. :D

Okay, I am a total newbie---see, I can't figure out how to go back in and edit one of my cards as "TRADED". I'm sure there is a way, but someone with knowledge must rescue me. :D

I'm sure it gets frustrating to request a card when it is already soaring across continents to another ATC addict. ha ha So, be patient as I learn the little nuances here---my learning curve is steep. :D

Debbie--

Thanks for the advice on how to watch for new entries from the master list... jeeeepers, you're right, just keeping track of the forum remarks is making my head spin. :wink2:

I am going off to bed to catch my breath---and, ummmm, make ATC's of course.

(thanks too, for such lovely compliments--you are all so kind---as soon as I get more agile around these boards, I'm going to be able to catch up with the new ones that I've missed commenting on---argggggh)

I can't figure out how to go back in and edit one of my cards as "TRADED".
I had the same problem until someone kindly explained it to me. When the WC page comes up look along the top blue ribbon for "content areas" in white. Click on that and you will see "art project system". Click there. When that page comes up go to the left side and scan down the list of choices to one that says "MY Projects". When you click on that it will bring up a list of projects you have signed up for. Under the ATC project look for "final entries" and the button under that which says "browse/edit". Click there and your list of final entries will pop up on a page that allows editing.
Please remember to put the word "traded" in the title of the entry. This saves those who are browsing a lot of trouble searching, as it is easier to see.
I am so loving all these new cards. Can't do more than just read the posts and drool over the latest entries right now. But soon I will post and trade....

thanks Kathleen. these are my first chefs to do and quiet fun. I also do conductors. I love conductors. they always have one really weird crooked hand that is all twisted and bent out of shape. This is what gives them character. I am going to try and put a conductor on a little card. I have never done a conductor on a tiny one. If I post it then I was able to accomplish it. hmmm. maybe tomorrow. they are a bit more tedious than the chefs.

Thank you for your comment, comments from others make one realise how differently we interpret the same thing. Glad you liked the colours...I have never thought of koru as edible, but rather as based on the tiny fern fronds or seedlings one sees when walking through NZ bush.
Common as , but very beautiful and dainty looking despite their sturdiness..

This is a really nicely executed little painting.
And I don't even get into cats usually. Bet it gets traded really fast by a cat loving ATC artist.
(If I had pets, I would probably choose something useful like chickens for fresh free range eggs, or a goat to eat gorse, or...
Growing up my family always had a bit of a local zoo with at one time a lamb, goat, pig, 6 chickens, one fat dog, two cats, a great grandmother,a cousin and an uncle..plus my three siblings. Canary type / caged birds didn't survive long in this zoo environment unfortunately.)

Okay, serious problem here! Why oh why are so many people doing such good cards?
Are you wanting me to tear my hair out? I try to trade with everyone at least once...if I don't run out of cards to trade with, then some people put such good cards on that I want to trade with them again and again! But I don't want to because I want to give them a chance of trading with different people.
So to save my sanity and hair, stop putting such good cards on!

What handsome, healthy happy little boys you have. It is so lovley to see young ones who still have that innocent, happy look.
If it only had a sound track.

 I'm not in an ATC mood these days... going big, plenty of unfinished!
But when I see the last entries, I wish I had ATCs ready to trade...

Anne

Hi Anne! I know what you mean about having to be in the mood. I love the ones you have got finished. Glad to see you in this project (still have my christmas card!) :wink2:

Kathleen,
Yes I believe the playoffs are uppon us already! Sigh..... I prefer to go to the games than watching on TV.

Amanda,
I do everything in pen and ink or pencil. I have considered trying wood block printing but have discovered I hate to carve wood. Oh well. This piece I did in photoshop (2 days of it!!!) and that is why it has great details. It will be a while before I do that again! Other than that I plan on doing some embriodery type cards which will be one a kind.

I really like the colours and composition of this piece, Kathleen.
Can't remember if I have asked you if you want to trade it...if it hasn't gone already?
(I did a big clean out of my PM storage, and got a bit carried away)

I find it helpful when people post to say they have added to their gallery so I am letting you all know that I added 4 new cards to mine. Three are from peices I did about a year ago and one (the Bulldawg) I did this morning for this project. PM me about any trades.

Hope you like them...

Thank you to Weckster and all you very encouraging people who have given me feed back on these.
I have a confession to make however. I did these when I was seventeen...which is longer ago than I care to admit.
Shows you what a art piece hoarder I am doesn't it :)

Hi Avie--

Have you tried carving in rubber medium? I'm not sure if one can get the finer details like that of wood carvings, but I found it easier on the hand. I have a box full of sliced up eraser blocks that I was using for background textures when I was doing block-printed ATC's a while back. I think with an experienced hand, one could get much finer work than what I've accomplished. I left mine quite rough.

I may be able to find an original ATC leftover that I will upload. They come out very primitive---but it gave me a good enough excuse to use those sharp, lino cutting tools!!!!

Here it is--
