Vanessa, this is really nice and oozing with creativity. I bet baby Leila Pearl will be holding a brush, some metallic dust, glue, and pre-cut trading cards when she comes out.

Cheers!

I have received so many fabulous cards lately, and have not made the time to comment on them publically. But this one I just have to, especially as my husband and also Avie's, really like it.
It has metallic embroidery thread for the web, which looks and feels like chain...Avie your poor fingers, and the attention to detail such as the use of a clear thread to add the tiny shiny glass beads...beautiful.
Couple with the choice of back drop fabric, which suggests so well dew and soft light. LOVE it.

Leilani may not come pre armed for atc'ing, but she'll probably be gulping like a fish :p I seem to be fixated on sea / fishy themes at present. Even had sushi tonight. Yum.

Mmm. . . sounds plausible. Actually, the file names don't have "#" it's just the Title that has #.

Thanks Chris!

Hi Erica--and thank you for your comment!

I used regular Nu-Pastels (the chalky kind) and rubbed them in good with my fingers--then I sprayed a matte fixative so it wouldn't smudge all over.

Seems to work fine. Pastels can blend so effortlessly into other shades, and some days I just want to get my hands messy!

He is a much better painter than I am! I buy him primary colors, black and white paints so he learns to mix his own colors. Right now we are busy doing christmas cards for U.S. military service persons overseas who can't come home for the holidays. Then we will be back at our ATC's!

Debee, I see that this is not traded yet. I'll PM you about a possible trade. I just posted 3 new cards for trade (plus 1 that my wife got for herself). I tried using oil pastel on felt paper. I don't know if that is same as the "suede" paper which you use with your colored pencils. I think they're similar. It was very hard to control the oil pastels when it came to the small details. I'll try colored pencils - it might turn out to be easier.

I'm eating lots of salads these days so I can use the recipe and the beautiful painting.

Cheers!
Joel

Thanks Debbie,
I just finished two more chairs, one to go!
I did them in Red and White too, must be in one of those moods! The Tub was hard, if I had to do it over I would applique it differently. The feet came out messy and they were the whole point of doing the design.

I am just putting matching works together eg. subject or palette or style...
so that it is visually pleasing to me.

I know Godzoned has put hers on clear pages that have the flag of that country at the top. That looks good also, especially because she saves all the stamps.

I was doing it by country.
One country per page but now I have so many pages from the US that I decided to put the US pages by artist. :D

- oh wait I have heaps done by each artist. So that will be several pages by an artist. lol oh now I am confusing myself! I really have to sort them out anyway. :D

Hi Avie....I'm just putting them in as they come along - Some pages are solely one artist, others are mixed. Just depends. I'm just enjoying flipping through the album when new ones come. There are some beautiful little paintings in my lot. I love them all.

One thing I do do is notch down the artists info, and what picture of mine it was swapped for. Gives a nice continuity to the whole process.

Hi all, I have been busy getting ready for a show the first week in december. I am doing miniatures and framing them. I found a bunch of wooden frames at our local super market for $1 a piece. It was amazing because I was looking for frames. They are very nice and very well made.

Anyway, I am hoping to get a few very nice ones done and framed by Dec 4.

I have a larger abstract I am currently doing as well. Anyways, I have tons of atc's started and just a couple good ones that may fit for the show.

Hope all has been well.

For Debee if she is still wanting this one. The white paint is thick and will be a while before I can send it. For some reason, it is not drying that fast. Maybe because it is damp in the air I dont really know why.

Let me know Debee.

I am saving my stamps too! I love the hobbit stamps from NZ! My family has been Tolkin fans since I can remember, I believe the series was the frist books my mom read to me as a child. I am happy to know that there are others keeping stamps too because I just ordered some pretty ones to put on my ATC envelopes. I could only get special olympics ones for air mail though, nice but not as pretty. BP, you can give yours to Godzoned if you want to :wink2:

I was wondering... I am getting a pretty good sized collection now, how are you all catgorizing your albums? By artist, or by medium, subjects or not at all...

Just curious....

Avie :D

I put them in my album in the order I recieved them. I also keep all envelopes, Note cards and other neat stuff tucked away in the albums pages. I love my cards :D

This is my first painting of an actual infant. I was engrossed in painting the (nearly dry) 'caravan interior', when I heard heavy breathing and looked up...this was the sight I saw, my son (not a very good rendition) peering curiously over the wooden bed head, with a big curious smile on his face.
'Dad' was busy getting his bath ready.

I have a new hidey hole painting space - that doesn't take over the dining room table ; the window alcove, behind my bed. Great natural light source.

Might hold on to this one a while, as my husband likes it.

I think you did a very nice job. I have taken several pictures of my stove early in the morning for this reason. But, I have never painted it. I need to just stand right there in the am and paint it as a still life.

Great piece and watercolor tooo boot!

Now, if you just do that - go paint it in the morning - I'd happily swap with you (again)

gypsy series. original painting. fiddled with this one for ages, trying to get the right mix of colours..as in decorative but not tacky. Didn't get the chiffon netting texture right, but never mind.

I have seen a few caravans as there are travelling people here in New Zealand. Their transient homes are also their workshops, and they sell a range of crafts from hand forged metal works, to woven crystal holders, to candles.
I love seeing their colourfully dressed children running around outside, and the often highly decorated yet daintily painted house buses, and caravans they live in.
All motorised of course. But a horse would blend in very well!

This mexican 'day of the dead' series is really interesting. I especially like your use of scratchboard for this piece. It works well.
Have you seen the 'Freda Kahlo' film which Salma Hayek had such a huge involvement with?
It is full of luscious visual and sound imagery and has this really neat part which incorporates wooden puppets and grotesque cartoonism, that your work reminds me of.
I recommend you see it if you can. I was so inspired - by the works of Freda herself, and the film that I watched it four times in a week.

See!!! I told you to paint more and more and more. Everyone loves your paintings. And no, this is not a conspiracy. :wink2: Just you don't worry about that big hair/head of yours and keep the tubes of paint freshly squeezed on the palette my friend--the only problem with a big head of course, is when you can't fit through the door, or you can't find a hat that fits, or perhaps your eyes start migrating towards the sides of your face as your skull morphs into the size of Neptune. But other than these minor inconveniences, we love to pump you up full of self-confidence and see no harm in doing so! :D :D

Let me know if I can call in my IOU's, or are there more beauties coming, ready to be uploaded--don't hold out on me!!! Ha---and yes, keep the lovely infant masterpiece--it is precious and should be yours forever!

Welcome back Eileenclaire.
This is the Main ATC project - Most atc people hang here.
The Nov ATC project is where I post my cards I made in november - I usually put my link in here if there are new cards only because I have a large amount of cards in the main project.
ATC animals - is a project for Animal orientated ATC's, it is suppose to help sort out the large gallery here - and an attempt at orgainisation of ATC's.

No need to double post things at all just put a link on the main ATC discussion that you have new cards available.

You are allowed to cross trade in any of the ATC projects. :D

Hope this helps.

This one I especially like Kathleen  It reminds me of when my siblings and I tried using chopsticks for the first time...unpainted splintery wood ones.
We fought and had great fun for about an hour, not getting very much of thr meal in enroute. A great way to diet I reckon. We ended up using them like shovels, with the bowl held on an angle, asian takeaway style.
My great grandmother spent many years in China, so she was a great teacher. I still remember how to hold them 'correctly' although it is probablly old fashioned now :)

Thanks Godz. It is the only style that has come to me naturally, since I was a teen. I didn't think it was a style, since it wasn't taught to me, until I went in with a bunch of errant art students to see a modern gallery...
We went up the top of the cable car in Wellington, after catching a bus and a train to get there, - I must have been sixteen, and there was this little gallery.
Flicking through the unframed works held in plastic poster sheet folders, I saw one by an artist named Nigel Brown...it was simply entitled, 'Muldoon from a newspaper' (Muldoon used to be our prime minister in New Zealand)
His style so reminded me of mine that I realised I DID have my own style and it was fine. So there you are.

Hello there everybody! I was out for the weekend and when i looked at the new works posted since i last visited I just realized what an incredible bunch of artistic people you all are. i specially like this gypsy series from Vanessa. Hey I see no "HELD" mark yet on this one. Can I have this beauty? The new ones i posted are not taken yet - but thanks a lot guys for the sweet comments!

I'm going back to the galleries and enjoy the beuatiful works some more.

Cheers!
Joel

p.s. We went to a resort for the weekend (swimming and stuff). On the way back, we passed by Taal Lake/volcano (remember one of my watercolors subjects?) in time for dinner at one of the many restaurants at the ridge. It was foggy we could hardly see the lake/volcano but we loved the cool breeze and the food.

Thanks for the info, Debbie. That was very helpful, I think I've got it figured out now.

Hey Joel! I see you haven't had a good look at Cezanne's masterpieces lately...his fruit bowls were nice and appeared off center and really suited it...as does your cup and saucer.
Loving your latest oil pastel works, which you are quietly slipping into the gallery, without BP's loud fanfare.
Well, let me blow your trumpet for you ...

Has this one been traded yet? It is marvellous. Luminous, like a pre waxed supermarket apple should be.,, Upon closer inspection, I think I detect gallery318's finger prints and tooth marks upon it.. I know she was salivating over it..

Yup. She did say she was going to fall in line for it (there was no line at all!). I didn't get a PM but I'm holding it for her just in case she still wants it.

This 'nature sketch' one is nice. Like the verdigr. background.
I agree it is hard to convey the metallic element when using glisteny paint.
It always comes out duller and darker, or makes the other non metallised elements come out weird colours.

I so identify with this Mayg.
I have even had my hair end up looking like I was joining the army, after one jsut didn't know how to even up my ringlety hair.
It has flattened into demure big waves now, but I used to have shirley temple curls / dread locks naturally....

Have PM'd you. Really like the swirly pattern and palette of the backdrop also.

I think the linear and painted style simplicity of the figure works really well with the whirlwind activity over the cooking element...hands in particular are a  :envy:   to paint I find. So I am trying to include those in my ATC's to figure them out. This is a nice piece Mayg.

Thank you Maygoblon, I added a touch of acrylic florescent paint to the flowers. It sure made them nice and glowy. This was from a little card I got at the flower shop. It had pictures of real potted plants and I liked them so I got a few to paint ;) .

Actually, I feel slightly oogish to have posted this painting. Maybe you see something different, that I am glad of :p .
I am going to try and get a nice plein air in today. Like take my time a bit longer. These little ones can take just as long as a larger one, so I have to learn to work more accurate and faster. The only thing is, I get into putting down the paint, I loose track of time :o .

You are analyzing your stuff to hard. I think this is a very good one. I love the posture of the body and can see the figure is playing the piano.

Just to go a bit further here with my thoughts. When painters paint people, some are all different on what they want to show about them. Myself, I love the action, the personality, the essence of that situation or person to come through loud and clear. I do not always accomplish it because I paint like a photographer shoots. For every 48 exposures I may or maynot get one good shot. So, when I paint every 10 paintings I may get one I really like.

To get better you have to NOT like what you are painting. This makes it drive you and pushes you to explore further into the medium. Painting is like pushing and pulling sludge around on canvas or paper. You sculpt it and mold it into the shapes you want or are looking for. Sometimes I don't get the right sludge mixture and then sometimes I like the brush strokes to really show. So, it is always something very new too me.

I am not experienced by a long stretch. I think experienced is an misused in the world of painting. Each painting I set out to paint is always a new experience so if I have never painted it before how can I have experienced. The lighting, atmosphere, colors ,mood and elements in the painting are always different. So, to me each painting I do is just an exploration into that specific time and subject I am doing right then.

If you can think in terms of relating the movement in your painting as you have done here, then you have accomplished the idea of conveying movement.

I would love to see more like this.

Sorry if I went over the top with the subject. Can I have this one?? :D

Whoops! I meant to say, I think in these terms. There are no lines in painting. Only shapes of colors that make a subject up. All things are abstract in shape to begin with. Just study your face in the light. See the different shapes of light. Look at the little triangles of light on the cheeks. These little shapes are what you want to paint to give form. If you can see this on everything you paint, well you be a great painter indeed. Too bad I can't do this all the time :o

MARY (mlelevier) - the sunflower arrived yesterday y es muy bonita! The brush stroke and the texture are simply amazing.

LISA (lisavollrath) - got the vinatage nude. It's incredible! The stamp and the markings are all antique looking and the way you did it just blows me away.

P

Wow Pilan, you are so passionate that I feel quite ashamed of myself. I think I know what you mean though. When I do bigger paintings I slosh around because I don't like them looking too neat and I actually experiment more and learn more that way. But somehow when it comes to smaller ones I have a tendency to regress and I feel a need to make every thing perfect. I think my mindset is that, the smaller it is, the less room there is to make mistakes. :(

I shall take your words to heart though. :) And one of your cards as well. :D

Dear Maygoblin, I did not mean to make you feel anything less than doing good work. I did get carried away in my post and yes, I am passionate and it shows more from time to time. Please do not feel ashamed, you should not at all. That is not what I was saying too you. I was saying you did great with the piano man.

I realize just how much I DO NOT know. I get down, then I get up. Oh, it is the emotional roller coaster of artists. It is so common and this is the one thing I really do not like at all. But, then I think it maybe my friend at the same time. This is when I start a new phase and try to go a little bit higher and start pushing myself. I hardly know a drop of knowledge and shall never know much more if anymore than this. Because when I think I start to know something, I just get shot down on the next turn showing how little I do know.
I was reading something about movement last night, late. When I go back to it, I will post it later. I think it was really good to read this. I went to bed at 1:15am after reading a few art books. My mind is ready for more information now. :p

There is never an end to this roller coaster ride. This is the greatest thing ever, I will always learn something new  ( now I like the ride ;) )

When you crest on those high loops Maygoblin, raise your hands and scream loud and long. :D until the next loop....

Thank you for the TRADE :D

It's great to know that you got both of them. I'm relieved that you sent it only a few days ago because if you had sent them earlier and I still haven't received them , they're probably in the mailing balck hole.

I completely agree with you about the mailing cost. Vanessa and I had a long and intense discussion about it (comparing the cost of sending one card vis a vis the minimum wage, etc.). I will wait patiently then.

I love looking at antique-y stuff, whether they're books or jewellery or pictures. This one is just beautiful. The mood conveyed to me is one of loneliness and wisdom and lots of years. Your cards are beautiful. I have a friend that just started back doing block printing. She performed a demonstration the other night at our local city artists meeting. I told her about your prints and how detailed they are. Did you do this on linoleum or that easer type you buy at Michaels by the stamping ink. I want to try this now. I have complete steps now to go by after taking lots of pictures. I had no idea what a reduction print was or even linoleum print. I must admit, I shied away because I did not understand it. But now it is no longer a mystery and will look forward to hopefully trading with you some day.

Just a quick note-

I am headed off to my 'real' job as a Merchant Marine officer, and will be at sea for the next month, severly limiting my ability to be online... I will still be lurking, PM me if you need me!

Thanks to everyone who traded with me this past month- It was a lot of fun- And my stock of cards is down to pretty much nothing! I am bringing some supplies with me on the ship, and will have some new designs posted soon... Keep an eye out for them!

BTW- If you are awaiting my cards already, DONT WORRY- I sent all of them out, they just haven't made it to you yet... I take care of my loose ends before leaving!

Ohhh a Merchant Marine Officer....... sounds important! Take care and we will all look forward to your lovely ATC's of Whales, dolphins, sea scapes, sunsets, the boat, your cabin........ you get the idea :wink2: :D

Here are the guidelines for the self portrait challenge.

1. Everyone emails me their scanned image of the portraits. By Dec 1st 2004 (mainly because BP's baby is due on the 21st) Avie PMed me hers. My email: [email protected]

2. I up load them into my gallery in groups of 4.

3. Wait till people PM me with guesses of who is who.

4. I then write down in order they came in and match the the people with who they guess right. If no-one guesses right then I'll do random matching. If they guess everyone right then I will do random matching.

5. I PM the people who to send their cards to on the 6th of December and the final answers will be revieled. :D

No bribes/blackmail will be accepted

Updated list of participants:
People "registered" via PM to me are:
Weckster
Avie - rec
Pilan - rec
Black Pearl - rec
Jlloren -rec
Morganna - Not sure if she is participating I may have made a mistake.
Maygoblin - rec

Due date is 1 Dec
If there is an odd number I'll do one. If no odd number then I won't
Join in don't be shy. More is better.

Thanks Kathleen!

I just realized that you guys have seen my entire family but I haven't seen any of yours. We see Debbie's cute babby thru her avatar and we have photos of members as their avatars (Kathleen, Pilan, Mary, June, etc.) but it will be nice if you would also post your photos. Who knows, we might bump into each other while walking downtown (he-he) at least we'll be able to say HI!

Cheers!
Joel

p.s. this is how my wife looked like on our wedding day. Isn't she just lovely? Sorry, this is all Vanessa's fault. Next thing you know, I'll upload our entire wedding album :D

You are too hard on yourself. This is a simple yet great looking sunflower. I love how you have tried Felt paper. I didn't know it exsisted. I also didn't know that suede art board was out there until Debee did her art. I am learning so much here!

I may even try some alternate materials myself. Now where was that material.....

Oh my, she is beautiful---it's no wonder you married her Joel!!!!

O yeah kathleen, she is. That's also why some people say our kids are good looking - - - as if I had nothing to do with it at all!. He-he-he.

Thanks for the spirit boost Debbie. You should try felt paper as a medium. It handles oil pastels well adn I'm sure you'll find it easy. Hey that's a cool idea, next time I send you your cards (I just finished your doll and I'm sending the Poplars 2 with it), I will insert a couple of ATC sized felt paper. You can then work on it and see for yourself how it is. After painting, I usually spray it with fixative and then paste it on to a regular card stock (used file folders) for better handling.

And then I will wait for you to post (hint).

Cheers!
Joel

Eight new cards available. These are just 2. They are all from a sketch book I found of mine that I did in the 1990's. Scarey. All cut straight from the book. All originals - not prints.

Debbie,

Your new posts are simply marvelous! Like I said in the Nov ATC thread, I wish I could have them all.

Hint to those who love real works of art (made in 1992 and 1993!) go and take a look. I really wish I could have at least one of those acrylics.

Joel
