Don't despair here is the one I did of Monet only added more length and flowing action too the leaves. You may recognize this piece. It was such layering and using linseed oil to get a glow , you can't tell it in person but it was a good experience to do them. This was like 5 yrs ago, I think  time moves on when your having fun.

Oh these are nice Pilan... I like the ivory background. I'd love to see it in person to appreciate the work with all the layers!!!

Oh Meika!! I am waiting to see your watercolors. I am sure they will be worth looking at for sure! I love to see other painter's work.

Glad you are enjoying a new medium... that's the fun part about art, no?

I'm still workingon paint-a-thon atcs but I don't even have ten yet. I'm doing them while watching football. It takes me forver just to decide what to paint. Add in the drying time and it's really slow. I'm doing watercolor and it takes tons of layers since they arent the really expensive good ones. Still I'm really enjoying it. I think watercolor might be my new favorite ting. At least for a little while. :wink2: Guess what I plan to buy next time I take a trip for supplies?
I'll upload the few that I have finished sometime this evening.

I love the colour in this one.

Question: does your purple come straight out of the tube or do you have to mix and match before you get it? Reason I asked is because I have a problem trying to get the right shade or purple. Still haven't found the right combination of blue and red.

It comes right off the hard crusty little disc of cheap paint! lol I bought those round stackable hard watercolors at Michaels one day awhile back. :D I only have a couple of tiny tubes that came with a how to watercolor kit I bought the other day. They gave me yellow, blue, and red only. I'm messing around with trying to mix them but I'm still pretty clueless. I definitely like the tubes a lot better so far. It doesnt take ten layers to get good color. I'm going to see if I can scrounge up enough pennies to get more small tubes of some different colors to start with.

Actually that's a pretty good idea, I mean, the round stacks of watercolour. LOL what am I saying? :D I mean, maybe I should go and get one of those as well. Otherwise I waste a lot of paint trying to mix colours.

Good morning from Germany
After I lost the contact to WC a little because not getting notifications about forum updates anymore (still not solved) and being out 3 days for a gosple workshop (with 1400 people...greaaaat) I have no idea about the certain ATC projects anymore. Can anybody explain (in very very short words) what is the difference betweeen, ATC, ATC november (seems monthly) and ATC animal(Seems special). Is there now a monthly project each month, will there be more special projects and what do I upload in former ATC project (because normaly I can put all things in the monthly project)
Thank you so much
Gudrun

Gudrun there was some hoopla while you were gone. This is still the main project. The November project just sort of is. I dont know how else to describe it without being longwinded. It may or may not evolve into a monthly thing. The animal ATCs are a themed project. At this point, cross trading is totally welcome, anyone who wants to start a theme project can, and everyone is participating in whatever they want to. This thread is the main one like always. Hope that helps. :)

This mixed media series is entitled, 'tangata whenua' which translated from the maori language means 'people of the land'.
These are abstract reflections based on elements of my father's NZ maori heritage.
It is a darker series -both in symbolism and actual imagery, than I have protrayed before, because I do not like or feel comfortable with this heritage.
It is a rich, beautiful heritage but gave my father a harsh, cruel childhood, and the spiritual aspect of maoridom is diametrically opposed to my own personal religious beliefs.
But it is also a part of my makeup and I cannot hide or deny that it exists.

PS. Like you Avie, the uploaded images are all over the gallery and not in sequential order.

WOW!! These are very nice cards. How do you get the fancy cut on the cards?
Hi, Pilan, and thanks for the compliment. I used a special cutter I picked up at an office supply store, of all things. It has three different designs on the one device. I had in mind using it to make my personal Christmas cards this year but I played around with it on some ATC's I already had cut. I liked the effect but couldn't think of a thing to do with them. This past week I got a notion to play around with my small collection of rubberstamps and I spied this fruit one. The two just seemed to call to one another and these ATC's are the result. The hand coloring, in my mind was the piece de resistance.

It does have a nice texture to it, but I am not sure if I did a very realistic job on the wrought iron look. Maygoblin is very forgiving thankfully.
Got an idea for a few more atc's for this series though, so never fear.
Going to call one 'tintinnabulation' (the ringing or tinklin of bells)..bit friendlier soudning than 'for whom the bell tolls' ey ;)

Thanks for your feedback Pilan and Sara.

I found it quite cathartic producing these..and was naughty, stayed up till two am.

Forgot to mention they incorporate bits and pieces like shaped copper wire, silk samples, painted canvas, old new zealand coins, copper and gold acid free pens, paua shell fragment and woven coloured raffia...mounted on black card stock.

Because of the specifity to maori culture, which won't be common over there, unless you have seen glimpses through movies like, "Once Were Warriors" and "Whale Rider" and "Burning Earth" I will be surprised if anyone wants them.
They aren't your usual touristy momento postcards . :)

BTW, totally unrelated to anything arty, I have to confess to being surprised how popular the nz actor Temuera Morrison is.
He just looks so like many of the maori men here. He is good at his craft however. But it just cracks me up when I see him portraying a baddie bounty hunter for example, in Star Wars. It is like seeing a cousin pretending to be french or something, when they are so obviously just a kiwi (NZ'er) :D

I take the following atc projects like this:

ATC November - I post here now for my cards are getting lost in my large original gallery - but it is a monthly one.

ATC Animals - for all animal orientated ATC's

ATC - our original project - most people still hang here - I use the discussions for telling of the lastest cards I've done with links.

Everyone is most welcome to start up their own themed ATC projects: (for eg:)
ATC recepies
ATC flowers/plants
etc

No double postings is nessasary if you post a note in the original ATC project with links to say there are new cards available. :D

Hope this helps.

Great portrait!
I hear that if the rings are removed their head will be too heavy to hold up and they will fall over.

I just saw a show about that recently. From what I think they said that it was an optical illusion about the neck being longer, that what it eventually does is change the shoulder bones over the years, creating the effect that the neck is longer. They also can hold thier necks up fine, but many won't be caught dead without it because they don't feel pretty without it on. I saw on that show a little girl that was getting an extra ring put on from out growning the other. LOL She was very uncomfortable without it and could not wait to get the new on one. Pretty amazing what us women will do for beauty isn't it? :p I supose it is no more radical then breast inlargements.

Cool A card man! I Love, LOVE IT!  I love that Idea!

Im all Entered dude! all you got to do is aprove me, and I will be happy to help look after the lil in's. My co-worker niece is 14 but she is gonna look over this one and make her own judgement call as to which one she is going to allow her neice to join up on. I've also told my friend Ham-Bone about the kiddie since she runs a moms group for our area. She is quite excited about spreading the word. :)

I started the MSN ATC forum for the kidlets. :) It's here:
Wee Folks Trading Post (http://groups.msn.com/WeeFolksTradingPost)

I've set it up to where you need Moderator approval to join and it isnt publicly listed on MSN Groups. Hopefully thatwill help to deter any wierdos. Once a few people join I will be adding some co-moderators since I won't have a ton of time to dedicate to it. When you apply please be patient. I will check daily and approve you guys as you show up. Each child will be able to have his/her own photo album to upload their cards so that should make it easy for them to make trades. I may be preaching to the choir, but please remember to supervise the kids you guide to the site. Make sure they know not to give their address out without adult approval. Thanks. :)

Thank you so much
Gudrun

Its a little hard to exsplain, Gudrun, but ditto on what Deb said. You do what is most comfortable and easy to follow for you. Especily since we are going to cross trade in other galleries too. The origanal is the catch all. Meaning there is no specific genre or type of card what so ever, then there is the animal of the themed card projects so far and the monthly. Where you put them is up to you. Of course the animal themed project they would have to be animal cards :D In short one, two or all three, its all the same.

Hey Deb, If you don't have any animal cards at the moment are we cross trading in the animal project too, or is that just for animal members, or is it just gonna be animal cards for animal cards? LOL I was confused about that :cat:

blind swap, I did not know you swap blindly here on wetcanvas. So will we ever find out who gets your card?

This is my first experience on wet canvas to ever trade, whats a blind swap? What if you get a card you don't like or is less than quality or a print you didn't want? I don't understand this blind swap thingy.

P

Im sure this was answered by now, LOL Im still catching up. Anyhow here is my take on your answer. :D

A blind swap is where you see an example of that persons work (this is how it is done on most ATC hubs, On here it is actually done like most inperson meetings are, but most mail based swaps i've seen are blind) You see an example of thier work, and they either take a look at an example of yours (or not) And the two parties agree on the number of cards to be traded and mail them out. Your just as suprised as they are when the cards come in.

In blind swaping, it is even more important then before to keep track of all the folks you traded with, althought thats always important, but here is why.

IF you get somthing you just simply cannot live with, you can second generation trade it. The thing is here is that the next person you trade with has to know that it is a second generation trade. You don't mark on the back of the card that it is tho, since it is somone eles card. YOu simply say that its a 2nd gen. Any card you get can be 2nd gen card traded. IT is a normal practice. However, the reason for keeping track is especily if you do allot of blind trades and do allot of 2nd generation trades to not trade that card back to the person that created it. I've heard of it happening on MSN. LOL that would be akward! Knowing that you can 2nd gen trade, actually makes blind swaping more fun. If you get a mass of cards you don't like, instead of being bummed out about it, instead your back in bussiness! :D

Most folks are not upset by this because its like money in circulation, and most prefer it be in a home where the owner treasures it. :) And you end up getting the card you treasure, its win win. :) I hope this helps dude.

I really must say this card will be treasured forever. I know you said you weren't happy with the colors, but I absolutely adore this card. :D

I will be on the lookout for more of this style from you. I think you have a unique way of capturing the figure with the linework, and I DO love the soft grey tones of watercolor you chose for this work. Great job!!!

Hi joel  I am almost finished with the chef. I think the oil paint is taking longer to dry because I did not use any medium to accelerate it... Anyway, just wanted to let you know.

Is my ;) volcano watercolor and acrylic or just watercolor :) ?

Hi Paula,

I'm eagerly awaiting for those Chefs. I'm glad they're almost done.

Sorry for responding only now (we had a long weekend), the volcano is mostly watercolor. I think I used a tad of white acrylic at the tip of the volcano to blend the smoke coming out of the crater. It's impossible to do that with just Watercolor.

Cheers!

NB. I have hung on to that tissue paper for nearly ten years, as love it. Paua shell 'sails' on deep navy background...glitter detail.

These images affect me deeply for some reason...I guess it strikes a chord as the polynesian peoples were essentially a transitory people, migrating and canoeing incredible distances.

They appear quite simply made, but took ages to assemble just the right mix that I like.

For all you sailors out there...

Thanks Gudrun! I'm happy that you liked it and at the same time humbled by all the beautiful remarks everybody has been making upon receipt of my cards. From my end, at least for the cards that successfully crossed the oceans and arrived safely, I am extremely satisfied with all the beautiful artworks that are now on display here at my work station. Beckon and 'Wa wa Wanita" are part of the same story, but are meant to be separate.

Hi all, I have been busy and will continue to get busier. I just want to propose a quick project here.

For all the ATC'ser...since we paint on little cards maybe this would go quickly.

How about someone i.e.. Morgie. create a project or lead (sorry I am trying to volunteer you, but need a neutral person ) that is called self portrait. or maybe not create a project we just do it on this thread.

We paint ourselves onto a little card and trade. But, here is the fun part or at least I think. We have to have one neutral person to upload all of the portraits and we all get a chance to guess who's portrait belongs to. Maybe somewhere in the portrait we can give one little hint of who we are for fun. Only if you want to give someone a hint. Then we trade. This could be a holiday project.

Do you think ya'll would be up too it? It would be fun, I think  .

Let me know. Morganna, pm me if you want to tell me to shut my trap about volunteering you..... of course you could do one of yourself and you can send it too one of us and upload your and you could be in the fun too.

Let me know. Morganna, pm me if you want to tell me to shut my trap about volunteering you..... of course you could do one of yourself and you can send it too one of us and upload your and you could be in the fun too.

This piece looks almost surreal Uncert. Esp. in light of the story behind it. Like the combination of your latest atc's with their simple strong linear drawings combined with vibrant splashes of colour. Really interesting. Keep it up

Anyway, I gave the first 2 of these cards to my lunch partner---every Friday we eat sushi together... I'm also married to him. :D :D

I will be designing two more sushi cards for trade sometime this week. Love that raw fish. YUM

Okay, Lets go ahead and start the portrait if you want too. But, please have it at least started and possibly finished and uploaded by Nov. 15. Lets see who we can get for a neutral party..... hmmmmm, maybe someone like Mariana aka mleiver, if she is willing too or someone like this. This way Morganna can participate. This way it will give us a few days to mess around and trade each other. Then we can send it off to the ones we traded with.

We can send our portrait to Marianna or whomever is chosen and then they can upload it..

I will send Mariana this link. :)

I will have mine done before Nov. 15. You can look in a mirror and paint your picture. This is how I have done this before.

Good luck and hopefully Mariana is willing to do this and we can have Morganna to participate :).

Joel, you had me laughing in your recent PM when you mentioned how you usually end up portraying asiatic (I think that was it) featured people, than caucasian..I have the same problem except mine always turn out slightly polynesian or european (eg. italian, spanish, blah blah) even when I am aiming for caucasian.

I wouldn't worry Joel. My cards never seem to arrive in sequential order from date posted either.
It was probably just despatched a different, slower flight route.
Different planes, different destinations enroute etc.

Isn't it funny how I just told you last night your new stuff would probably arrive soon ?! And voila, three come in. :)
Just glad the glass element of your new piece survived. IF they are ever damaged, please let me know everyone.
I will repair it when you send it back with your next trade, or send a replacement element for you to adhere yourself. Whatever suits best.
That is the peril of me making such bulky cards...your peril is trying to fit the darn things into your gallery display case /folders.

I am soooo confused!
Is this forum up and running still, as it appears.
Does this mean the November ATCs are out?
Are we going back to the way things were?
Any changes I should know about?
Now that I've asked all this, maybe I'll go back and read some of the posts!

Hey, Do we need to have some kind of ritual for Black Pearl since she was the first to break the 100 mark? 100 lashes with a wet paint brush...

one, two....

Heh heh, I celebrated reaching that goal by making the three 'Fiesta' cards...seemed fitting somehow. Maybe I should emphasize the goal and see if my husband will let me get some more collage adhesive (that gel medium is NOT cheap) as I have totally glued myself silly with all the paua shells...

New cards in ATC Nov - ummm you really have to blame Black Pearl for taking them all - oh wait not all of them - sunfilly took the other. (See the Nov ATC link below)

There are other cards left.

Don't forget the nose card, lady bird cards and ATC guide here in this project.
Ohhh and the ones in the ATC animal project. (see link below)

Thanks guys you all are the greatest! :D

I sent you a Pm as to where I've been :( Computers are so mean to me) :( I think I own a coupld of lemons because i've been wracked with computer probs all damn month I think.

I am soooo confused!
Is this forum up and running still, as it appears.
Does this mean the November ATCs are out?
Are we going back to the way things were?
Any changes I should know about?
Now that I've asked all this, maybe I'll go back and read some of the posts!
Better late than never!

Hey spoon! This one is still up and running. ATC cards have just got a whole lot bigger. Ive been away from the key board for a few days, so I got to finishe checking all of the messages (I do this in order from my last posts) But as far as i know they are all up and running.

:) I hope I sheds some light on it. All are open and cross trading from galleries is accepted

BP, did you make this pattern and the kite series yourself? The colours are really cultural. When I look at them I know that they'll mean something. Problem is I don't know what. :D

I didn't weave the coloured raffia, that is gourmet florist wrap I think, but I have liked to look at it and have had it for over ten years in my 'inspiration' junk collection that I pile onto the table when I am trying to create something.

The miniature basket or kit that I cut up for the four kite' examples is a painfully woven one by moi (or I should say mostly by my patient older maori friend and teacher). It isn't flax, I did do a bigger (hand bag sized) flax one but you have to give the first thing you make away, which my sister got.
I was using it to store another girlfriends homemade olive oil based soaps in the smaller one..but figured this way I could have four people enjoy it.

I also had a go at making flax roses for a girlfriends wedding. That was fun and they looked really cool with real flowers mixed in. But take ages to make.
As well I had a go (years ago now) at bone carving, and only did one pendant- which of course I had to give away again, and my brother wears that.

RE actual meaning to this piece...bit vague myself as not really happy with it. I want to expand it further.
Coloured weave was supposed to allude to the work of women - they did all the weaving and preparation of the flax ...but also to the beauty and complexity of the woman herself...
Really interested in imitating a feathered ceremonial cloak in an ATC format, but have to think it through. They are very special, amazing to look at and touch, and hold a lot of mana, so don't want to be disrespectful.

I found myself using my glass topped wrought iron framed towel rack holder the other day (like a light table, you can put a torch under it) ... I sat in the bathroom and made those four kite' cards...thinking how serious my addiction had become.

Regarding knowing who has done one and placing it in the gallery...
once they are collected at one place, they could be numbered and uploaded temparily into one ATC'ers gallery.

The names of those participating could be randomly listed, people could guess and request...
Then once the guessing is finished, we could each upload our own (saved into own computers before sending off original) actual image under our own name.

That would mean needing to include a self addressed pre stamped envelope when you mail off your original to the central collector.
If Weckster and you are happy to do something like this, maybe Weckster would consider having Morganna's since that has already been posted ???

ehh weckster, so see if you can figure it out anyway.... :D like I said I kind of stink doing portraits.

BP our dear Morganna wrote me yesterday and said she was too busy. So, maybe we can enlist another atc nut to do the job.

Here is what we need. BP fill in the blanks if I miss any, and I do forget.

Sometimes I feel like rigormortis has already started.

Anyway we need a person here that is not involved in the mystery portrait atc. This person will need to allow those who are making portraits to send their portrait to your email address ready too upload into your id.

After you have gotten these uploaded then you shall let us know.
We then will go have a look and try to find and name the person who belongs to that portrait.

Can someone volunteer who is not involved? Please :)

Please post if you are willing to do this.

Thank you,

:D :D :D :D I am like seeing you all nice and healthy sitting in your bathroom with an evil grin on your face. The light turned out and the torch under the top burning illuminating the bathroom. I hear banging on the door and a voice calls out. Black Pearl come out with your hands high above your head and leave those deadly atcs your making on the table. Lay them down nice and slow, no quick moves or the atc's get it!

I think your plan is great. Now, we need someone to volunteer unless Morgie can do this afterall. I know she has been having trouble with her pc, so maybe we should try and find someone who's pc is working well.

Ok we need one message by Pilan (she seems to know what is going on) about the self portraits. Who to send them to. Whos collecting them, what do they do etc

I'll collect them if no-one else wants to. I really cannot paint myself. I've been sending off a card about myself (ATC profile card) to everyone I have traded with so you all know what I look like. :wink2:

Regarding the postage paid envelopes - instead of a stamp on the self addressed envelope ask your local post shop for a stamp coupon for the country you are sending the mail to. I did this for an Australian swap as NZ stamps don't work in other countries. Put the stamp coupon in the self addressed envelope. Hi folks, I'm back! I'm sorry I've been away for almost a couple of months, and I disappeared from the online world out of the blue (thank my boss for that :( ). I've posted a couple of ATCs today and I hope I'll be able to get back on track on whatever's happening in the group right now.

It's great to see ya all again!

Mar

Welcome back Mar
Golly, I'm glad you are ok. Work is a killer of these type of things for a while aye. Looking forward to seeing your new work.

I'm glad that no one feels they're "good" at portraits - I sure as hell am not! Makes it even better! Though I think Maygoblin and I have an advantage as we already know what Beep and Pilan look like.

Heh heh...you may think you do, but I am different when preggers...and I also may have used a really old photo for the portrait...

Truly amazing! You do very nice watercolours jlloren. :)

Thanks Maygoblin! We have to trade one of these days. Of all people, you are probably closest geographically. BSB is less than 2 hours by plane from Manila. I spent one summer there a loooong time ago (1985) and I thought the Kampung Ayers (water villages) were really cool. Did you know that the Istana (with a golden dome) was built by Filipino contractors (Ayala Corporation)? My Mom spent 4 years teaching grade school in Brunei. And I almost got employed as a front desk clerk at the Holiday Inn but I decided to pursue my law studies here.

Cheers!

Heh heh, interesting facts. Ayala sounds familiar but I don't remmeber where I heard it. I've never visited the Philippines before but my parents have. The thing they remember most is the traffic congestion though.
Good thing on your law studies. Anyways Brunei isn't much of a place to live in forever. If your memory serves you well, there wasn't much of anything here back then. Hey I just realized that you were here the year I was born!!! :D Yup, that was a pretty long tim ago.

What can I say, I'm old enough to be your Dad! Well, that should make me feel young because we're enjoying the same thing, right!

You should come to the Philippines. Traffic jams are just in Manila. The nice places to see are out of Manila and there are no traffice jams there.

For somebody used to the western orientation of Metro Manila (and I was 20 years old then!), there wasn't much to do in Brunei. But I made most out of it by trying to see the beautiful places. I even went to one of the areas where the minority population lived in what they called "Long Houses". Are they still there? The forest reserves were also awesome.

What really struck me was the fact that there was no poverty in Brunei. People who lived in the water villages had their Volvos and Mercedes Benzes parked on the banks of the lake. Even the parking attendant had her own car!

Cheers!

I've never used rubber cement.

But I take off the masking fluid with a hard eraser or a finger. It does ball up. Masking fluid is liquid laytext. (as far as I know) very good for sticking on those ready made rubber cuts and bullet holes for costumeing or first aid demos :D

okay, all. I have sent off all cards except for the chef I am finishing up for debee.

Joel, I wrapped your chef in wax paper. When I went to write on the back I accidently smudged white oil paint. However, it was so little I was able to put it back to original image. Please set it out and make sure it dries well, say about another week then put it in your atc book or wherever you keep them. Sorry, It is not that much and did not realize it was not completely dried. It is just a tiny bit.

Pilan, what is this about "just paint"ing ?!!! I cherish your works, and so many others whose styles would leave me flummoxed if I tried to imitate them.
I look at my compiled gallery every day...peering sideways to see the textures , holding them up to the light to catch the colours... I look quite mad actually.
Have you considered that my multi use of mixed media is an attempt to draw attention away from my simplistic painting skills, or just to merely drive you all mad trying to squash the cards into your folders ???
You don't have to cover up your painting skills, believe me. Keep right on swishing with those ole paintbrushes, bent over your bargain table and cursing under your breath at your gypy back. :p
