Hi Cov,
Gel Medium or flow medium is used instead of water to thin acrylics so they flow or blend easier. It also gives a longer open time before drying. When you thin with water it thins the pigments out but more importantly it thins the binders. These are the chemicals that hold the paint to the surface. When you use water it weakens the staying power of paint.
I use Jo Sonya or Jansen's traditions mediums with my acrylics , but I'm sure Winsor & Newton or Chroma produxta would be good as well.
Hope this helps

.........Appreciate the quick response, hopefully il get a hold of some tomorrow-and then be able to experiment.
By chance, do you know any artists that use the medium?

Lots do.. So it's hard to say. I recently took a class with a
Lina Hoffman. www.creativeartist.com/lina
She uses it all the time. Since she was an oil painter first. When she teaches in oil it is very similar. That's why I use it, too. I started in oils.
