I didn't add a background since I was afraid that I would mess it up entirely. Perhaps it doesn't need too much or it would all be tooooo busy.

I'm no expert on flowers but these look good to me. http://www.wetcanvas.com/ubb/smile.gif

It's very pretty as it is. A background could make it look too busy.

Its lovely as it is , a background would reduce the impact of the flowers,

I'd leave it as it is. The only way I'd know to put in a background at this point is to mask out the flower before you did any background. Then I'd only use tints of the colors you already have in a wet on wet or solid wash to keep it from being to busy. Janet Walsh works in this manner and has a book and videos.

Thanks all, for the nice comments. It is always hard to determine whether a painting is done or whether more should be added somewhere. It feels good in an oval also.

I am working on peonies right now - well as soon as I finish reading here. They are much harder to do for me at least.

I think the white background works beautifully with the flowers. I wouldn't add anything except a double or triple mat to pull out the flower colors and a frame.

Oh yes...and a signature!
