The catalog is out and posted online (http://www.artmethods.com) and it looks wonderful! October 15 through 17. There's a plein air landscape painting event at the Huntington Gardens, there are workshops and demonstrations on collage, mixed media, watercolor, oil, acrylic, silk painting, color theory, photography, airbrush, and more. There are lectures on promoting your art, how to find a gallery, supplementing your income with art-related business activities, and way more! There are creativity boosters, and vendors of all kinds of art supplies, usually with fun goodies and good prices, and, more important, there will probably be a decent showing of WetCanvasers and what could possibly be more fun than that?

Anyway, take a look and post here if you might be interested in coming to Pasadena for the long weekend and getting together to break bread or just chew the artistic fat!

Just recieved our catalog today. We're mulling it over. It was great last year to meet so many WCer's there. :D

Great, Li! I know the hotel costs are a stumbling block for some, but although I don't have a guest room, I can get one of those inflatable mattresses for the living room floor and if anybody wants to rough it on the floor in the computer room, I'm game! So, no excuses now!

Got my schedule yesterday. I attend this every year. Was there EVERY day last year. :D And I will definitely go this year. I'd love to meet some of you, break bread, chew artistic fat, etc. :D

    Thank You, Thank You, Thank you for posting this message. I've signed up for classes (plan to change one for another), but I haven't made my travel arrangements yet. I've found a couple good sounding deals online for combo flight, hotel, and car, but didn't have the knowledge or courage to book yet. I'm not a very well traveled person and I've not made online flight reservations before. However the biggest concern is the drive from LAX to Pasadena. I have never ever been to California and the TV makes driving out there sound worst than anything I could imagine around Dallas. However on the other hand the fact that I have made the drive from Dallas to Nashville alone a few times gives me confidence I could manage a 35 mile drive (despite the fact the online hotel facts indicate it takes an hour to make that short drive) to Pasadena.

I need more input on the hotel setup. The deals I've found one was for the Sheraton and the other was another major hotel that I guessed from the location was also fairly close to the convention area. A posting here or a PM with help in this area would be greatly appreciated.

I knew WetCanvas was the best place to come. I was going to post my own "California Dreaming--but a coward" thread but was perusing first. :D

I'm so tickled to hear you're coming! First, see if you can get a flight into Burbank instead of LAX. It's a lot closer (heck, Pasadena is a joint owner!) and a lot less crazy. If you can't do that, consider taking SuperShuttle or PrimeTime shuttles to the Pasadena hotel you pick and then rent your car in Pasadena (I know Enterprise will bring the car to you). If that doesn't work for you, don't worry too much. You can get right on the 105 freeway at LAX and take it over to the Pasadena Freeway to get here. Depending on the time of day you're driving it, the Pasadena's kind of a pain, but that's more 'cause it's slow than that there are high-speed car chases!

The Sheraton is right in the Conference Center, so it's the most convenient and they do have special rates for the show. There's nothing else quite as convenient, honestly, and our public transportation is not the best, shall I say? However, the Westin (formerly the Doubletree) is only a couple of blocks walk from the Conference Center, in case you can get a good deal there. If you're willing to drive a bit, you can probably get better deals.

So, ask your questions and I'll do my best to answer 'em!

My flight from Dallas is suppose to land in Burbank around 1:37 Thursday. Am assuming the hotel has a shuttle. Do you know? If not who do you recommend? Didn't schedule any Thursday classes. Free Friday between noon and 4:30 P.M. Guess I should have scheduled more classes, oh yeah had to budget for flight and hotel :D . See that am free all Saturday morning until 12:30 and after 4 P.M. Have to leave Sunday morning.

I have no clue about the location so will leave it up to you locals to suggest a meeting spot.

How much should I budget for transportation and meals in the area? I've never been to Cally-forn-e-a before.

What about dinner on Saturday night?

Rose Queen
08-29-2004, 04:38 PM
I have a workshop all day Thursday and all day Sunday, a Friday afternoon class and a Saturday evening class starting at 5 p.m., so dinner would be tough for me Saturday night. I could do it Friday night or Friday lunch so long as I can be at the class at 1 p.m. Or maybe Sunday breakfast somewhere? One way or another, I do hope we can all meet up!

Msue, I don't know if the Sheraton has a shuttle, but there are private shuttles and SuperShuttle and PrimeTime shuttles at the airport that come to Pasadena for $20 - 25. I'd pick you up myself except I'm in a workshop all day Thursday. Just walk out of the terminal and you'll see the bus loading area right across the street for all of the shuttle companies, taxis, etc. I would budget between $8 -15 per meal in the area.

Public transportation isn't great in the metropolitan L.A. area, but there's a great City-run shuttle which is 50-cents a ride that you can get all around Pasadena on; here's a link to their maps: http://www.ci.pasadena.ca.us/trans/transit/trans_arts.asp The Conference Center/Sheraton is right on the number 10 route, shown in red on these maps, right about where the "R" is in "Green Street."

You're within leisurely walking distance of the local light-rail system, so you could get down to South Pasadena, Chinatown, or downtown L.A. to connect to other parts of L.A. It's about $2 one way to downtown.

I would LOVE to be able to go to the Art Methods and Material Show. Pasadena is an awsome place and it is a great time of year. I am going to Paris the first week in October, so unless I win the lottery I just won't be able to swing it. Please let me know how it is. Is this only a CA thing? Are there any shows like this in Texas? ohhhh! how I miss California. Thanks for the info and the invitation. If I don't win... have a great time and tell me all about it. Gin

I expect the Sheraton runs to a cocktail lounge, or there's a nice wine bar at the Paseo Colorado, a shopping area across from the Conference Center.

I just wanted to add my 10 cents of encouragement to those who are pondering and wondering if they can afford to attend. I mean with regard to hotel costs. When I attend shows like these I rarely go with the official hotels where the venue is, especially if I do have a rental car. Hotel parking can easily be $10/day at big hotels. So I say to myself if I already have a car anyway, then why not use it to drive 5 to 10 miles away from the venue and find a cheap motel like motel6.com or rodeway inns, really should be possible in that area to find accomodation for about $40 a night if you have AAA membership or web specials. Hotel cost should not be the factor preventing you from attending.

I'm in San Diego and considering going as an exhibitor (Project Dogwaffle), but I haven't attended this show before and I hear it draws about 3500 - 4000 artists, is that about right? And I have a feeling most attendees are into traditional painting, not on the PC. Now in our case we find traditional artists who paint on canvas with oil and tempera and acrylics or watercolors etc do like DW2 as a fine introduction to dabble on the PC, experiment with colors and shapes without the fumes and or occasional spills, but still I wonder what the crowd here thinks, is there a market for computer painters at ArtMethods?

I agree with you about driving a few miles to save a lot on hotels. The only thing to be cognizant of if you do that is that you'll pay upwards of $10 a day to park close to the Conference Center, since it's in the heart of a commercial district and parking's at a bit of a premium.

I first went to AMMS last year, so I'm by no means enough of a student of the show-goers to know the answer to your last question, but I think if your presentation is interesting enough, there's a market for you there because so many artists already use computers and are at least somewhat aware of what potential the computer has for making art, doing preliminary compositions, changing to grey-scale for values, etc., but may just need a nudge to get them to jump in. There's nothing like hands-on, see-it-for-yourself demonstrations to do that, I think, so that's my 2-cents' worth.

The wine bar sounds good to me.

This is my first show for art supplies. The closest thing I've ever attended to compare is an educational conference and they had vendors that covered just about every aspect of classroom and home study. They even had entertainers you could book to present programs at your school or meeting. I would think anything that related to helping artists would find a niche at the Methods and Materials Show.

This may seem trivial and silly, but what kind of clothes should I bring? Just summery light weight or will the evenings be cool and I'll need a jacket of some sort? Here in North Texas at that time of year we could still be having warm evening or we could be in the 40's.

Days should still be warm and sunny, but a sweater for evenings isn't a bad idea. Rarely is there rain that time of year, so I don't think you need prepare for that.

Hi Rose Queen & gang,

My daughter is coming with me. I'm trying to co-ordinate her classes (acrylic) with mine (watercolor). We're staying at the Sheraton. Count me in for the get together.

I was thinking that instead of taking a class on Thursday, maybe I could help with transportation to the Huntington Plein air event. My van holds 7. Then my daughter and I could just wander around the gardens and watch the artists do their thing. Can we take photo's there?

Do you know who is going to the Huntington? How we could co-ordinate. I called today, and so far, it's the only class that is almost booked up,

I guess we could co-ordinate through this link. If anyone has a better idea, let me know.

Hi! Glad to hear you're going to join us!

I don't know who'se doing the plein air session, but hopefully, they're keeping an eye on this thread and will report in. Yes, you can take pictures at the Huntington, except in the galleries themselves. There's a new children's garden there that I haven't been to, but that I understand is fabulous. There's plenty else to see, the rose garden, the Japanese garden, the cactus gardens, etc., plus a cool bookstore.

Hi there,
As a newbie WC'er I hesitate to sound too knowledgeable, but I did go the the Art Methods show last year and stayed at the Sheraton. It was right there, almost the same building as the show. You cannot fault the convenience factor. The deal was as good as you're going to get in So. Ca. too.

Goa ahead and jumpp in. You will not regret it.

Ah! Dogwaffle! Read it as wonderful!
Its a great little program, unassuming in cost and a GIANT in ability to mimic paint on the PC. It is also an animations program without the BIG pricetag. I sound like a commercial, but I heartily recommend the program. I bought it, and the biggest problem I have is finding more time to learn it properly. I make my living as a visual digital artist, and seldom do you ever find a program that combines all the fun and powerful capabilities of some of the major programs at a price that anyone can afford. This is one of those programs.

And to answer your question, a dogwaffle is the first attempt at something and it usually goes to the dog. I say "woof, woof".

Thanks everyone who's interested in discovering Dogwaffle. Dan Ritchie is the author of Project Dogwaffle. His website is indeed squirreldome.com - he also wrote a lovely novel, Silver Squirrel. And he's a 3D fx animtor, has developed Dogwaffle over 7 years as his paint tool to do post work, matte painting, special fx and just plain illustration and paintings for his book too. There are others. Some are listed in the Dogwaffler of the Moment page at thebest3d:

http://www.thebest3d.com/dogwaffle/dotm

Some of them have painted for years with oil on canvas or aquarelles and others have plain never painted.

I haven't decided yet to get a booth there as a vendor, but I would be interested in running a seminar if there's enough takers interested and we could figure out when and where. I'm in San Diego, 2 hours South of Pasadena. This coming weekend I'll be in Pomona at the LA computer fair, if anyone is in the area and interested in seeing Project Dogwaffle in booth 246

For details about why Dogwaffle, check this:
http://www.thebest3d.com/dogwaffle/dan/dogwaffle-readme.html

And just to make sure this doesn't sound too much as a sales pitch, I do want to stretch that in addition to the save-disabled Demo version of Dogwaffle 2 there's also a fairly recently updated free version 1.2 based on v2 code with save-ability and no registration needed or timeout. It's a 4.4 MB download.

The demo version: http://www.thebest3d.com/dogwaffle/demozone

the free version 1.2 : http://www.thebest3d.com/dogwaffle/free

What's possible? http://www.thebest3d.com/dogwaffle/art

I hope this helps. Don't hesitate to ask me if you have questions on Dogwaffle.

WOW! thanks for the info. I usually go and pay the Sheraton rates. Not that I can afford it. It limits the classes I can go to if I exceed my budget. Or it limits what I can buy, once there.

What is this Friday nite "meet"? I hope to be there on Friday and into Saturday. Is anyone meeting for dinner? I hate eating alone.

Has anyone ever taken a class with Ms. L. Winner, the portrait lady?? I'm wondering about putting that one on my list of "to dos". Any input is vastly appreciated.

As to the Dogwaffle question, its a great little program. Its built by Dan Ritchie, a California programmer who used to do stuff for Lightwave (read BIG software company that does 3D stuff). Anyway he is trying to get his product on the market, talked about and used. Once people figure out what a deal it is, they will be amazed. It's a program that amasses the capabilities of several major programs out there and puts them in one. Drawing, painting, animating and more. You can try the demo as a shareware, but all the kinks are ironed out in version 2 and its almost too cheap to believe. As I used to say to my kids. "Try it, you'll like it"

On to Pasedena!!!

Can't believe the event is just two weeks away. I've taken on new job duties and time is getting away from me. May have to just throw a pair of jeans in a bag and hope for the best :p My schedule is open after 4 P.M. Saturday. I had to settle for just three classes, but the trip is a big adventure for me too. I rarely travel and haven't flown in 10 years.

I went ahead and booked at the Sheraton. Decided it would just be easier. Then I don't have to worry about renting and parking a car. It will be great to be around so many artists and get the creative juices flowing. I've not had much opportunity to work on my art with my new job assignment.

Ordered and received a WetCanvas Polo shirt which I will be wearing at the show. Thought it might be a conversation starter and identifier.

OK, let's get this meet-up stuff scheduled! I can't do dinner Saturday night, but if enough of you can get together, I think it would be a blast!

For Friday night, I'm suggesting we meet at the Bodega Wine Bar, which is in the Paseo Colorado shopping center, directly across the street (north) of the Convention Center. It's on the second level. Here's their website: http://www.bodegawinebar.com/ It's a little on the young hipster side, but we'll just overwhelm 'em with maturity (yeah, right... )! I think someone said her class was out by 8 p.m. on Friday, so why don't we get together about 8:30 p.m.? Now, how shall we recognize each other, other than by the fact that we have 20 years on most of the Bodega's customers and msue will have on her WC! t-shirt? Do we all have WetCanvas lapel pins? If not, what do y'all suggest?

Wow - trendy spot! Well, I have a WC tee, but I don't think its dressy enough - or is it? Guess it doesn't matter if it has a spot or two of oil paint, right. I think it gives the shirt character.

Anyone needing a ride, just let me know.....

I say 'wear whatever you damn well please, Michele!' We just need a way of finding each other and I'm sure we can figure something out...

Well, I will be there wearing my Harley shirt. I don't dress for anybody, including work. As my sister says, "Life is short, so wear your party pants!"
Don't quite know what anyone's party pants would look like, but I'm open to (reasonable) suggestions. For me they're jeans. Come to think of it dress clothes are jeans too. Nothing fancy comes from my house unless I've got a daughter getting married. I'd rather spend money on paint and software.

8:30 Friday night, Bodega Bay it is.

Can't wait to meet you all. I've been lurking for some time now on this site and have a great chance to put faces to names. Lovely.

Did anyone ever take a class with the Winner lady?

See y'all in Pasadena.

This will be fun!!! Jeans for me, with my WC shirt. Unless I change my mind at the last minute, which I've been known to do :D If anyone needs a lift from their hotels, etc, give a holler.

I'm quite sure they have fringe... ;)

How 'bout the Bodega Wine Bar in Pasadena instead? Bodega Bay is about 600 miles too far north... :cat:

OK, it looks like jeans will be the key element of garb for the meet-up! We'll recognize msue and michele by their WC t-shirts and Weezy by her Harley shirt -- I'll just find the rest of you and introduce myself!

I'll see you there along with my daughter Cherie. Guess I'll wear my wc tshirt too, and of course jeans. My work outfit also, except on graveyard, my uniform is sweats.

Here's the third and we're counting down!

I sincerely hope that this is a good year for the attendees, teachers and the participant dealers. It's nice when so much effort goes into something and everybody feels that they received gratification on some of their expectations.

It would be interesting if anyone on this site had been to the North Carolina event and could compare. I know that they get Daniel Greene to instruct at that one. I would give my eyeteeth to listen to and observe him. ( Pretty picture just came to mind. Harley shirt and no eyeteeth. Now wouldn't my daughters be just too proud of their mother!) :wink2:

on to Pasadena!!!

Only four days until I board the plane west. You'll recognize me as the exhausted woman with the tired eyes. Worked 102 hours last two weeks will put in at least 36 before heading out. I'm so looking forward to some fun and art.

Sounds like you need it, msue! BTW, did you ever find a calligraphy group in your area?

I got some leads. One of the instructors I had already signed up for something else volunteered she could teach calligraphy so she has been doing the class.

It sure was great to finally put names to faces in this site!

MSue, Hope you made it home safely and without too much trouble. Maybe you got some rest on the plane back home.

Itsmichele, I hope the baby is doing much better. I'll tell your sister Dorothy that I saw you! I hope you get to join in on the classes next year.

Rose Queen, it was really nice to meet you and the others as well..... And thanks again for the ride to my hotel...I was beat that night.

Sure was great to feel as though I knew people around Pasadena. It seemed as thought the whole place was friendlier this year somehow. I think y'all were the ones responsible for that.

Not only that, I felt that this was the strongest year for instructors and classes that I have seen in the three years I have gone. I went home with a contact to pursue some serious art drawing classes here in the San Diego area at the Watts atelier in Encinitas. The demos by Jeffery Watts were unbelievably good. His life/portrait work is phenomenal. For me the event in Pasadena was pivotal this year.

I thank you all that I met for making this a truly memorable years visit.

Weezy, it was great putting faces and names together. I had several very good nights sleep. I could have done a better job of time managment in scheduling classes and allowing time to see some sights, but if I ever get to do this again or anything like it I will know better.

I did try to call you for breakfast Saturday morning, but I either missed you or you were in the shower. I enjoyed a nice early morning walk to Shakers and around a few blocks. Found a mailing center a few doors down from the Post Office (which I intended to take my goodies to the post office to mail), but ended up the guy at the mailing center stuck everything in a FedEx box and promised to drop it at the FedEx center Saturday evening. Hopefully I'll have all my goodies by Tuesday afternoon.

My third class was a disappointment and I don't think I would recommend it to anyone.

imagenie it was nice meeting you and your daughter too. Hope you had a safe drive home.

Rose Queen, The name fits you very well. You certainly are a great asset to Pasadena.

IZMichele, I too hope your baby is well on her way to being healthy and you get to take advantage of the show next year.

It was great seeing you again, Rose Queen, and meeting the "new gang". Cherie "lunablue" and I had a great time painting, eating and doing the mother/daughter "bonding thing". We had some great classes. Burridge was Cherie's favorite, he's really fun. I enjoyed Cathy Quiels class and Strouds. What happened to you, Li? Hope it wasn't a lodging problem. I had a Junior suite, only because the regular rooms were all booked up. Had a vacant sleeper couch just waiting for a homeless artist. Kinda expensive but wouldn't be a bad way to go to split 3 or 4 ways. There's always next year. We had a wonderful time, can't wait to do it again !!!

Wow, you guys are "johnny-on-the-spot" with your replies! It really was great.

And to those of you lurking and not part of the Pasadena festivities, try and make it next year. It was really a good experience. You get to meet people with the same concerns that you have and you're not the "odd-guy in the family that everbody tries to explain, cause well, ya know she/he's the artist". You get to try new things and see new ways of approaching your work. Not only that, but somebody else will see something in your stuff that you can't cause you're too close to it. You are surrounded by like individuals. You will get encouragement from others taking the same classes for the first time and you will give yourself permission to not have to be perfect in execution. Hey, its only a half-day class for gosh sakes.... not your life requirement.

Teachers were really good too. At least on my sched they were. Luanna Luconi Winner lived up to her last name too. What a together lady. Knowledgable, talented, well-spoken, businesslike, sharing and funny as can be. She had a very homey way of putting her thoughts together and letting you see her art processes in an easy to understand way. There were many people in her class taking oils for the first time and she was very good in her instruction to them and more critical with those who were up to it. And hey, portraits are not easy whether you've been painting a while or not. She was, altogether a really good teacher.

As for pictures,,,,I didn't take any. I was schlepping so much stuff, that I elected to leave the camera in the car. Sorry.

Did any of you take any? There were some lovely exhibit pieces. I didn't get those shot either. Just call me pre-occupied.

Sorry, Weezy, I never think to take a camera anywhere with me, except on vacation! Msue, I'm sorry your last class wasn't a winner; it's a shame to come so far and not have everything just be spectacular. My last class was today, all day with Ann Baldwin, my favorite collage and mixed media artist -- it was just a dream! Still, meeting y'all was a highlight of the weekend and next year, I hope we can all do it again and drag a few more WCers with us!
