Project Leader: debbi_carr
Relative Difficulty: Irrelevant
Type Restrictions: Painting
Medium: Watercolor paints
Subject: Figure
Days open for signups: Always
Maximum participants allowed: Unlimited

Description:

This project is for anyone who would like to have fun creating abstract or contemporary representations of the nude figure.
Any water-based medium is allowed such as watercolours, acrylics, ink, you name it...use any technique that employs these mediums.
The point is to have fun maximizing creativity in representing the nude figure.
There will be no restrictions on images (photo references, life models or tasteful imaginary images) providing you stay within the guidelines of the WetCanvas! Users Agreement.
Let's get started!

Remember, in order to help keep the discussions on projects organized, you should post your questions, suggestions, and comments on submitted work here in this thread. By doing this, we allow other non-project efforts to not get "pushed down" by a swarm of project-related threads.

Well it actually turned out much harsher than I intended. I wanted softer rounder curves but I guess that's for next time.... I've tried to fix the shoulder but not with much success so far :(

I'm going to dedicate my evening to working on it!!! I'm out of my medium here!!! So I'm just feeling my way around with acrylics and stuff... :( ugh...well it's good to be pushed out of the nest sometimes...yes?

is your medium usually oil Tam? i can't remember...

Tamana
08-18-2004, 07:12 PM
Mostly Oil Pastels, Debbi -- but it's okay!! I'm up for the challenge! Really (yeah...that's what I'll say...sure....) ;) Imma jes sit here quietly and fiddle with a new one (# 4 LOL) tonight....switching to try something different.

I tell you, painting with acrylics after oil/pastels has me admiring painters like you and Pi a million times more!!! I JUST CAN'T DO IT!!! :( :p

Well if it's any consolation to you I'm totally unable to do anything with pastels...

debbi_carr
08-19-2004, 12:34 PM
i feel the same way too anne. everytime i try to do something with pastels it just ends up so-- i can't even find a word for it! all the colours that i don't want mixing end up mixing together...i never get the effect i set out to get, often times things look muddy. with acrylics i definitely had a challenge getting used to how the colours never looked the way i expected them to look or i worked too slowly and my palette would dry...now i have this retarding medium and i also work faster...and i think i am used to the fact that the colours appear lighter before they dry and get darker as they polymerise.

Hope I'm not too late to add mine. It was my first try on Yupo paper 10 X 12 inches using FUB and perm rose W&N artists watercolor. The bg was done by spreding saran wrap on it while wet. I tried to do the same on the figure but it just kept smearing. It is mostly just an experiment. I am not sure how to attach a link to my entry so I will attach a copy here.

I like this final version. I'm impressed with you technique that gives an almost carved look to the image, as though it were carved from wood.
The pose, the pendulant breasts are real, the contrast is good. The lighting is very effective!

Debbi,

Thanks for the great compliments!

Indeed the objects are quite thick, something like 1-2 cm. Also the background is heavily textured. I use a mixture of acryllic modelling paste and sand. The mixture is applied to the background (canvas) with a paint roller, creating the background texture. For the objects, I fill a syringe with the mixture and squirt it in the desired form. For large forms, I use a sizable syringe, for details a small one. Once dried, I cover first background and later the objects with a larger number of layers of very diluted acryllic paint to obtain also an "optical" depth.
