LOL Vasil, I painted this with a brush then decided to add a very little ink to outline the leg segments. I started by painting the background wash for the timber, then the colour patches wet-in-wet then finally added the black paint for the body, legs and antennae. Just a smidge of ink outlining to sharpen up the edges. The grain in the wood was added at the end.

BTW I added a rear leg on the far side. Just thought, maybe he needs a shadow?

Doug,
That certainly is a fabulous photo and you've done it justice. I have a feeling this little fellow is going to be painted often in this project. You really captured the iridescence of his shell, even his legs shine which you don't see in the tiny image. Great job.

Judy I went to my doctor yesterday morning, and was expecting that he would suggest some operation cause I was feeling that my wrist wasn't healing... to my surprise after he examined it he said "the swell on the tendon has gone down and the pain should have already curred... but I see it is going well so let's give it a chance for another two weeks" :D... I was releived and after I was out of the hospital I felt at least %50 better than when I was getting in ;) now today I feel less pain but let's see what happens...

anyway, I had a question with no answers :

"why WC does not inform us of new uploads to the project final entries ?"

and here is a second one which could have helped for the first one :

"how can I sort entries in the project final entries page according to tehir entry date ?"

I mean how can I track to what entries I have commented or better what are those entries I haven't yet commented ?... well, it there is no way than you should be having also problems when plenty of entries are uploaded...

I am GLAD you are feeling a bit better.. (()) just because..

Now .........

If you click on notification type as you probably know and click instant email notification in your reply window, OR at the top of the page under thread tools and subscribe...

You will not get a notification if someone uploads their pic into the finished or progress works, One has to just keep checking..

Now you can see what entries you have commented on, but it is a little tricky.. Hang on... I will right back with instructions. Just have to check again..:D

I can't find it....... :crying: :crying:

There is a way, but I can't remember how to do it. Where is Gail??? She knows. You click somewhere to view all comments...

I will look again........

WOO-HOO........I FOUND IT......... now if I can just remember..:D

1. Got to page one here (http://www.wetcanvas.com/forums/showthread.php?t=205134&page=1&pp=40), and click on click here..

2. Click on Browse final entries..

3. click on persons name..

4. There entries will come up. and on the right you will see..

Click on view all comments, and you will see if you have commented or not.. Phew!!!!!!! A bit time consuming when there are a LOT of finished entries tho'.. ;) Best to try and keep up..

Many thanks Judy... I used some of the remaining paints in my palette and I mixed also some more paints in them so the colors are dull... and these are not artist's grade paints... I have to fetch my Lukas pans from my girlfriends house for the next one...

BTW I hadn't open my palette for 2-3 weeks and as I opened it yesterday I found there is some "mildew" (is that the correct word?) in the ivory black and burnt sienna wells... also the ivory black had disintegrated a bit... my palette is a plastic covered one (I found one eventually some 3 months ago) and before I close the lid I add a few drops of water to each well and also I have a wet sponge in it... I then put it in a nylon/plastic bag and leave it on my table... but the place I paint is in the attic and nowadays as we have around 35C degrees outside it stays in a quite hot place... yesterday I put it in the fridge dispite my mom's protests :D... I will see what happened to the paints next time I open it... any suggestions on how to store my palette ?... I found out that if I do not put some drops of water before I close it the paint dries and hardens like a stone... well, I know I have to find MGrahams ;)... also pans never get "mildewed" ;)...

Vasil if you are going to leave your palette for extended periods, try adding a drop of glycerine instead of water.

If your palette is mouldy, you need to throw out all the paints on it as they will ALL be contaminated. Then wash the palette with hot saopy water and a little bleach.. I usually put a bit of meths in mine and wipe over with a dry paper towel to make sure all the germs are dead.

No I have not ever had the problem of mould, and not with M.Grahams. BUT I don't leave my palette wet either. I opened my palette for the first time in around 6 weeks the other day and my paints were as good as the day I put them in there, but it is cool here as it is winter..

I know a lot of folk use water to spritz their palettes because someone told them too. But I have W&N Quin Gold on my palette and I added glycerine to that and it satyed softish and fresh..

Wonder what others have to say..??

Judy thanks for the hint... I guess it is normal glycerin you can find at a drugstore or pharmacy... but what do you do after with the glycerin in the wells ? I think it is like liquid wax... anyway I put very little paint to my palette wells because I don't paint so frequently...

Dough thanks for your comments...

Aunt Pearl, no it didn't bite me (yet) :D... well, next I have already drawn the grasshopper from the project references... but I have some others that are more colorful from the RIL...

Vasil..What's not to like? I love the bug! especially the way you captured the colors on his back! So, you used tube black? It turned out really well. Nice job.

Good advice from Judy about your palette. The mold or mildew may be caused by heat and humidity, but also by the student grade paint. I dont know. I also spritz my palette before covering it when I'm finished painting..The longest I've gone without painting was for three weeks in summer and we leave our AC off while we're gone..When I came back, the paints were dried, but a spritz of water brought them back to life..I have a Jones palette with a cover..I dont put it in a plastic bag or anything, just cover it.

Here is my first entry of the colourfull beetle !
About 25 x 18 cm, 300g watercolour paper, don't remember the brand.
I gessoed the beetle to see what effect it would have, inspired by Nicholas Simmons and NodakerDeb's amazing results in colour and texture.
Think I wasn't patient enough, should have waited till it dried before putting
more colours on ... ah well, maybe the next one (haven't decided yet)

Hi JoAnn thanks for your comments and the hint... yes I used that moulded ivory black... may be they got moulded (only the ivory black and the burnt sienna) because I cover my palette with a plastic bag and it doesn't get ventilation... I thought that if I keep them so it would be easier to keep the paints moist... now my palette is in the refrigerator... see what happen to these nasty jerms/bugs that mould my paints :D

I just had a wonderful tour of the Gallery of Bugs that have been posted so far.

There were a couple that were so large when I opened them, I couldn't see the whole painting and had to scroll across the screen to read the comments by the artists.

I'm not sure why that happened but hopefully people will make their images large enough to see easily, but not so large that they overflow the screen. I think it was Aquarius and Vasil's full-size images that did this.

Am I the only one having the problem?

Hi everyone... I've finally sketched out my painting, but there's lots going on at home in the next few days, so I may not get my brushes very wet...

JoAnn... your dragonflies are wonderful... I like the irridescent look of your first guy's body... I particularly like the transluscence of second guy on that leaf!!!

Auntie P... your little maggot fly is really well done!!! His transparent wings against your background are excellent. *kind of creepy* though... :D :D :D

Carola... your beetle has wonderful colour... your shadows are really well done, too!!!

Vasil... LOL... you great big guys being intimidated by these little wee bugs gave me a chuckle... your beetle is well done... he could use a deeper shadow though...

JJ... BEAUTIFUL butterfly!!! Your twiggy bit of branch is excellent... That bee photo, btw, is JT's... you could pm her to ask for a bigger file...

Barb... You have to love to hate ladybugs... We have imports here that are multiplying faster than rabbits... They don't have any natural enemies and are rapidly becoming a nuisance... Yours, however, is just a charming, chubby little gal... her purple shadow is perfect...

Your leaves look like maple leaves.. You should go out and photograph leaves. Close up leaves and paint them. Now there is a thought for another project ;) painting leaves. :D

Your ladybug looks terrific against the maple leaves. Nice clean colors and lines. Good job.

Try this with your leaves for practice some time. Take a piece of wax paper and place it wax side down on your drawing. Use a ball point pen to make your veins in the leaves. In essence you are creating a wax resist and when you paint over the leaf with body color, the veins will not take the color. It looks really neat.

Thank you Vasil, JJ and Sylvia! I appreciate your comments.

And thanks Sylvia for the tip on wax paper (I knew there was a reason I just bought some..) I usually score the leaves with my Terry Madden knife, but that makes them dark when you paint over them and sometimes I do want them lighter. Can you remove the wax if you make a mistake or want to change something?..I'm going to try that..

have you done them with wc pencils ?... that square background is very nice too...
No...just the initial drawing and the square box all in the same green. But most of it was done with my little WN box of half pans and the brush that came with it. Lots of fun and it's been ages since I properly sat down and drew.

Thanks Laudesan, it's a lovely project.

Carola too...thanks...

http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/Projects/lib/719/completed/9833/tn_cicada.jpeg

Meet the Magicicada, or 17-year cicada, which we had around us here in Ohio in June this year.

These little bugs live very interesting lives. They live underground for 17 years feeding on roots and things, then they emerge en masse (millions). They only live a brief time once they do and have only one mission—to breed. The males song can be deafening if you happen to live in an area that is infested. (We were lucky and only saw a few around my street, but a few blocks away there were lots.)

They look like outer space creatures with their brilliant red-orange eyes and large, dark bodies with orange veins in their wings. The ones I saw were several inches long and quite plump. They look odd because they have no mouth, they have no need for one because they only have one thing on their minds. LOL! They are quite harmless without a mouth or stinger, that is why they come in such large numbers, no matter how many get killed, more are there to continue the species.

I enjoyed painting this guy. It was fun and went together easily. I kind of like the abstract background of the leaves too.

One thing you might do in the future is comment on your own image after posting it to the Gallery. That way it also appears in the thread in case there are people who don't visit the Gallery.

LOL! Doug. You would have hated it around here in June. In some places (fortunately not where I live), they were so numerous people were using snow shovels to clear their driveways of them! Trees looked like they were moving so many were on the trunks.

I don't like bugs either but I thought these guys were kind of neat, like outer space creatures with their bright red eyes.

Thanks too JJ and Joann, Appreciate your nice words about my little cicada.

Vasil,

Thanks, glad you like my cicada. You and Doug don't have to be afraid of this bug though, they have no mouth or stinger and unless you look like a cicada they wouldn't be interested in you AT ALL.

Remy, These are not the same as the cicadas that are out right now leaving their exoskeltons all over the place (seem to like my veggie garden). These only come out every 17 years; there is another type that come out every 13 years; and the kind that come out every year (in fewer numbers though).

JoAnn ;)

Hi everyone... My first bug painting is just about half finished... I'll get it posted this week, I hope!

JoAnn... Your hoverfly on the daffodil is beautifully done... wonderful colour in this piece!!! Your yellows are nice and clear and provide a perfect home for your little guy...

First JoAnn... :D... Your moth is simply gorgeous... I love the wet colour in his wings and your inking is perfect for him!!! I really like that soft background... He's mythically magical!!!

Ron... is that blue butterfly a Morning Cloak? I've only seen one of these in real life, once. Beautiful blues! Your ladybug and bee (with rose leaves) are really well done... almost botanical... and I love your titling!!!

Sylvia... your cicada is much more interesting than those emerging from the ground here in SW Ontario... Ours are not nearly as colourful... He's a beauty... Those eyes are alien-like... I really like your leafy background treatment for him... Excellent title!

Vasil... LOL... your poor little grasshopper does need another leg... It's there in the photo, but you REALLY have to look for it... Doesn't matter, though... you've painted him beautifully... He was a very patient fellow when I snapped his pictures... calmly posing on our stoop while I took several shots... You did a wonderful job with him!!!

Here is my third entry for the "BUG IN" project...

"Flying Beauty"

I painted this from a photo of "cheryl" at wetcanvas RIL... thanks a lot "cheryl"...

started Tuesday evening and finished yesterday evening...

this is on Bockingford 300 gsm paper, size 7.5"x11" and Van Gogh pan paints...

used some masking fluid to reserve the whites on the wings... did I mess with the background ? I think the scanner was generous this time cause the resulting image is a little bit brighter then that on the paper... or may be its the light of the monitor...

C&Cs appreciated...

Beautiful job on your butterfly, Vasil. The markings on the wing are very nice and its delicate legs and antenna are well done.

I like how you softened the distant background while keeping the foreground flowers focused.

One thing to keep in mind when you use miskit, after you wipe it off, you will have to use a brush or something to soften the hard edges it leaves. The veins in your leaves seem a little prominent because the edges are hard.

I have finally finished my first entry!!! I don't normally paint in high key, so this was quite a challenge for me... The reference was sent to me, very kindly, by Seedy (Brian)...

This guy is a Harvestman arthropod... NOT a spider... otherwise known as a Daddy Long Legs... Since his body is not segmented, he has a place among the insect world all his own... Those fierce looking mandibles are perfectly harmless as he uses them for grooming his magnificent legs! Actually, only 6 of those appendages are legs, the other two are spares!!!

There is a species of Daddy Long Legs that IS a spider, called (oddly enough) the Daddy Long Legs Spider... It does have a segmented body and 8 legs...

Great job on this ugly little critter..I hate fleas..If there's one within 100 yards, it finds me, and gets its blood meal from me..We once had two dogs and a year of flea infestation that I will never forget..I think every flea in the country (okay the city) was in my yard and house lol. (it wasnt funny at the time though.)

I really like this. I hate spiders, but Daddy Long Legs don't bother me quite so much (maybe because they aren't really spiders) but I still wouldn't want one to crawl on me!! Did you do this from your imagination or did you have a photo? (Edit: never mind, I see you got if from Seedy)The flower is lovely.

Yikes, this looks like the Yellow Jackets that fly around here in September...they like to get in your pop, (or beer can) and hide there for a nasty surprise!
Good job!

Thanks for the interesting *flea facts*, Henry!!! I wonder if cockroaches share a similarly fascinating history? Your flea is full of graceful curves and lines... and I LOVE his colour! I really do despise the little beasties, but yours has lost some of his ferocious irratation by being so pretty... go figure that... :D

Your beautifully coloured little guy does look like a yellow jacket... nasty things they are...

When our Magoo was only toddling, we strapped him into his carseat and made off to visit some friends, one afternoon... He started yowling in the back when we were about half way there! Of course, being the good parents we are, we both told him to be quiet and be patient... we'd be there soon...

When we arrived at his *Aunt Suzie's*, he was still complaining... so... we pulled down his little trousers and there were 6 yellow jackets enjoying lunch at his expense!!! Needless to say, we had to take him to emergent care to be checked out...

I like your composition very much... you've painted the transparency in his wings really well... Excellent job!!!

Thank you so much for your narration about the flea. MOST interesting, didn't hink about them being around for that many years. I guess they AND the cockroaches would survive, no matter what.. :(

Your flea is.............a flea.......... no seriously very good painting Henry.. :) Thank you..

Henry,

You've made your little flea look like the ravenous little creature it is—mini-Draculas going around sucking blood.

Beautifully drawn and painted, but still ugly. ;)

Beautifully transparent wings on your yellow-jacket, Pat.

Very nicely painted with the soft background.
