My daughter is interested in art and graphic design. She, however, does not want to go to a stand alone art school. She wants to associate with some non artsy types too.

We know that Syracuse University, Carnegie Melon and Virgina Commonwealth University all have good, highly ranked art and graphic design programs. Can anyone suggest some other universities that have a very strong design program? I did check out Wash U. St Louis, but it seems to have a more spartan offerings of design courses compared to those that I mentioned above.

As far as SATs, she has 1200+ and has mostly "Bs." She is, however, in a humanities magnet program and has taken almost all honors or AP courses. Thus, her weighted GPA is probably around a 3.8 or 3.9.

She also has some interesting ECs. She was given "honorable mention" in a national poetry contest and has published some poetry. She is first flute an marching band and first flute in various pit orchestra etc.

Why is she veering away from an 'arts only' school? Does she have a preferred career path in mind? Has she spoken to any of her high school teachers (the magnet's teachers ought to be quite helpful, I would think) about what schools they might recommend for her, or at least, help her select some schools worth looking into?

If she does have a career in mind (whether its art, or art-related, or not) has she spoken to anyone in your area in that/those fields about where they went to school?

Just some thoughts...

She is only a Junior in school , but at least as of now, she isn't interested in a purely art school. She is interested only in an art related major such as graphic design or advertising design, which makes this attitude puzzling to me. However, she just wants to meet people and associate with people that are not just artsy types. Who knows what's in the mind of a teenager? I will certainly try to encourage her to visit various good art schools as well.
