There are things in the wind and a trickle of cash in my bank!
I think I am going to be featured on a number of breed quarterly magazines, purely publicity for the first round, but they will feature me in an article and I will get my name out there.
The publisher asked if I had a Chow Chow.
I went to the rescue sites and found this little guy.
10x8" on suede board.
First suede disaster. Well, not really, but I snapped this before I fixed it. I usually use a fine mist of krylon workable and go in to brighten up my lights with terry ludwigs to keep it crisp.
The local pastel society had a demo and he RAVED about a new Daler Rowney fixative, which did NOT sink, kept things light and happy and was going to change my life.
Needless to say, it smelled better, but sank this nearly back to blue!!!
I redid it and have put it under plastic for the time being.
Lucky for me I did a high res photo first, so they can use it on the magazine.

Lots of great news! And a wonderful painting to boot - I love the expression and, of course, the blue tongue - that really makes him a chow!

He's great! How did you get the magazine thing - did you write them or did they contact you first? Sounds like a great boost to your career!

I just KNEW that you would "make it", could not understand why it hadn't happened earlier. Maybe you just had to find the right kind of subject matter, a lesson for everyone. Lovely image, this.

This is my dog's doppelganger!!!!! I swear, it's his long lost brother..how sad it's a rescue dog and sure hope someone rescued him! You did a fabulous job...just perfect from fur color to eye shape to the nose and tongue...I know purebreds look similar, but Boot's has his own face and this is it! So I'm a touch more tickled with this that probably most lol!

I'm not a chow fan (had a neighbor once with a demonic chow so they now scare me), but this is a beautiful rendering. The fur is so alive and soft and fluffy looking and this animal looks so sweet and loving. The color is wonderful. Kudos and congratulations! I am sure you are estatic about the exposure and opportunity.

I missed this the first time-- it's terrific! Awesome colors.

Thank you all so much!
This came out of the blue and things are a bit down for me so it was a great pick me up!!

Trying to get into more demos. MORE COMMISSIONS would be better, but in lieu... I miss my doggie park!

dj, this is BEAUTIFUL! What a wonderful portrait! The looseness and colors are lovely!
Thanks to Artie, he's been finding a few beauties from way back. Love to see the stuff in the past resurface.

Chows are not easy to capture well and you have pulled it off magnificently. This one is a darling little fellow and your rendering has captured every bit of the wonderful chow spirit. I've owned chows or part chows for most of the last 50 years and my heart strings always get tugged when I see one. So glad you were asked to do this one, I so seldom see the breed represented anymore. A HUGE congratulations on the magazine exposure and the potential there for you. Great going girl. And well deserved.

02-17-2006, 10:37 AM
the rescue groups ought to have you do portraits of their dogs and i thinks they would find homes faster!
its a great portrait, full of vitality - i could almost feel/smell its doggie breath!

02-17-2006, 10:45 AM
Very, very beautiful. You definitely deserve the recognition.

Great painting!!

Somewhere in a bit of my recent confusion, I missed all the action in this post!!!

I can only laugh!

When I sent this to the magazine, she said that the breed fanciers tend to like smaller eyes, and this was not a "perfect" specimen. It is what sort of threw me off AKC.

I thank you all for the flurry of recognition. I have been sort of flatlined lately. Lots of personal stuff and my therapy has always been art, so I am double down. I have started back into my groove and hope to come back with a few more soon.

You guys always bouy me up.

You have no idea how grateful I am for you all
