I haven't been over here in this forum for some time. Still hanging out in the colored pencil forum :) But I finished this one today...it's soft pastels (mostly Ludwigs) on black Arches Coverstock. 12.5 x 17" It's from a photo in the ref lib taken by Larry Seiler. He takes wonderful photos not to mention his landscape paintings.
Comments and critique welcome....felt good to get my hands chalky!!

The evening sun and deep shadows are lovely here. I'm not sure about the water on the right.. the texture is a touch unsettling... not a big deal: all in all I like it very much.

Oh, this is lovely. I enjoy Larry's photos, too, as well as his paintings. I love the texture.
I suspect the water on the viewer's right side might need a stronger line along the bank so we can tell water from land. Of course, it may be the scan--or the resolution on WC.
The colors are delightful and the composition pleases me a lot. Good one--keep getting those hands a little more chalky, I say!

It's good to play with the chalky sticks!! :) The color & the light in your painting is excellent!!...I just find the texture of the paper to be a bit distracting...

Really like you painting....it has a tranquil quality about it.
I was reading about the Arches Cover yesterday! Was wondering if you are using the smooth or textured side. It sounded interesting and I was thinking of ordering some. Does it hold several layers? and how heavyweight is it...compared to Canson or another pastel surface. Thanks for the info!

This is lovely! I like the black paper underneath, keeps the colors from being too TOO soft and pale, add impact somehow or other! Very VERY nicely done...come play with us more often! ALL dust ain't bad, ya know! :D

Cindy...
Really like your painting! Great colors! I too used Black Arches Cover paper on my last painting that I did of "Lemons Three" and loved how it worked for me. I used the smooth side. Which side did you use?
Nice work...

Thanks all for your helpful comments! I really appreciate them. The texture is not quite as noticeable in real life as you see on the screen.
Carly, I used the textured side of the coverstock just to see what would happen. It's the 2nd time I have used it...1st was in a workshop with Tony Ortega who is a wonderful Colorado artist. He uses it quite a bit for his colorful paintings. Watching him work he does use lots of layers. I probably have about 5-6 layers in alot of areas on this piece. I used Rembrandts for my first layer and then all Ludwigs which are very soft. The paper is quite sturdy.
Thanks again!

I took this to a critique last Friday and made some suggestions from this forum and from that group. Mostly worked on smoothing out the water, and making the contrast on the lighthouse stronger.
Posting to see if the water looks any better to those of you who were not so hot on the texture in the water??
Thanks so much for your input, I listen to everyone and then try to find some common threads in what I hear. If several people are bothered by something I try to resolve it. So you were most helpful in critiqueing my first version.
:D :D
Comments and critique always welcome.....see anything else that needs touching up?

The water has a lot more depth now. Seeing the black thru the water in your first post gave it too much of a broken effect. I love the reflections!
I've ordered some of the Arches Black Cover! Can't wait to see how I like it :)

LOVE the texture of the paper that peeks through - the water is gorgeous! It is so easy to picture this, the time of day - the "golden hour"(last hour of sunlight)....
Dust is good for you - come visit us more often - its not nice to tease us with these beauties and then leave! :p (i'm kidding....)
just gorgeous! what else is there to say???
