In an effort to get "fast and loose"- two words I'd never have considered using to describe myself- I've been practicing, lately. Did these sunflowers a few weeks ago and snuck them into the weekly sketch thread at the tail end of the week- kinda a night raiding mission. Preston is insisting I bring them to their own thread, so, here they are.
This is about 7x9" on a gesso/marble coated piece of burgandy matboard, mix of lotsa different softies., and took about 2 hours. (Like I said, I've never been fast- I'm not that kind of girl....)

C&C as necessary- I'll keep it in mind for next time.

Everything you've been striving for and more (and I'm not referring to the loose and fast part). Well - ok I guess I am, but just in regards to your painting style.
Preston - good job - this one definitely deserved it's own thread.
Julie - this is magnificent and I love every bit of the rich colors and the painterly type approach. Perhaps you need to work fast a bit more often - this really has got umpff!!
Barb
what a difference from the painting of the house when you were talking about how stiff your work was - this is tremendous!!!!

Now this is one that could go for a bigger format! (see other thread about large sizes) Lovely and it still looks like you, just more relaxed!

Just goes to show, DONT THINK!!!! ... Just Paint!!! :D
.... the loose will come the faster you paint, as you wont have time to worry over nitty gritty details ...... lol try a similiar project of size and cut the time down by half and see how loose you get lol... just hang on to the elastic :D
.. good one SBJ

SBJ :p :p I told you so!!!!!! Looks like you've taken a few giant steps forward in your artistic growth!! this is no average flower painting.....Frame it and put a big price on it....
ps...I agree with sooz....man, I can see this in at least an 18 x 24....( same size as a full sheet of Wallis, coincidentally!)

ummmm.... wow! I mean- wow! I really like this one, but I like it because of the colour combination- I like the clean blue against the bright yellows and oranges- and I like the composition- in your face and popping. The loose part came 'cause I didn't want to get lost in all those petals- bad enough I hadda draw them in. So THANK YOU very, very much- I'll have to call my Mom and tell her she was wrong.
But, yanno, if I start leaving little euphemisitic, double and triple entendre remarks in the threads, it'll be all you Guys' fault... I'm NOT that kind of girl !
I nearly lost my halo there for a few....

Now how much fun was that?! This has got to be my favorite of yours that I've seen - good job! Go for broke and do something larger - this would be awesome on a wall in a larger size.
Julie, glad you posted these separately - how did I not see them in the weekly sketch thread?
This is a fun piece which has a sort of bold chunkiness to it quite unlike your usual work. If your aim was to break out of your usual style of painting then you definitely succeeded!
My small crit would be that I'm finding it hard to 'read' the shape of the copper container.
Love that blue!
Hey, almost missed this....I'll let the fast and loose joke slide on by....cuz this is really awesome! I've seen LOTS of sunflowers and this has a fresh new look to it that I really like! Agreed...you should do fast and loose more often!
How brilliant! This really shines, I like the new loosey goosey style, it suits and is very striking. More importantly, you like it, and have attained a sense of achievement and growth for yourself. Good work.
This is beautiful. Didn't read though everyone's posts but this is absoultely gorgeous The neighbors planted sunflowers in their yard. These look much better *S* LOL Beautiful work

SBJ - this is lovely. I really like the painterly feel to this one. Isn't it great to change your approach every once in a while. Keeps the paintings fresh. Great job!
