A new project has been announced in the WetCanvas! project system!

Title: Let's Get Moody!!! -
Project Leader: AkaMorgie
Relative Difficulty: Medium
Type Restrictions: Painting
Medium: Pastels
Subject: Not Applicable
Days open for signups: Always
Maximum participants allowed: Unlimited

Description:

JUNE PASTEL PROJECT - USE SOFT OR OIL PASTELS

Capture the fundamental nature or spirit of a mood. It could be anything, that feeling of love, laughter happiness, tiredness, sadness, anger, frustration, somberness, grief, realization, the list is endless and entirely up to you. It can be a mood you currently are experiencing or one that has been dredged up from the past. Don't think that you need to include a figure to convey mood, color, subject matter and composition can also convey moods. Think about texture, too, a cross hatched piece gives off a different feeling than one blended together smoothly. If your subject includes a bright sunny day, it will give off a very different mood than if it is dreary, dull and dank in your painting. If you want to convey envy, try using monochromatic colors, such as greens or use reds if portraying anger.

Here are some examples, the bright warmth of a summer's day to convey happiness, the smile on your loved one's face as they look at you, looking out from a warm place at the quietness of a winter's eve to convey a sense of coziness or safeness from the world. Desperation and/or helplessness in a homeless person, digging through trash or begging for change. A still life of a table full of food to reflect hunger, or an almost empty plate to show fullness. As I said, the list is endless. So letís get moody ;)

Thanks Mary for taking on the Project for this Month! I will get the word out that this is for both soft pastels and oil pastels and do the Announcement in the WC Events board.

Have fun with the Project - it looks to be a good one!

Very sensual Sweet baby, I like the mood that this brings. Great hand! I personally think hands are about the hardest thing to draw, maybe that is why the masters did so many of them. Never quite perfected the hand. Great one here. --vanity

Deborah, this is really wonderful and expressive. Awesome even. You asked for feedback so I thought I'd mention that the white seems a touch too, well, white. I think the creamy pale yellow you have on the palm would still give the same bright light effect and not draw so much attention to the right hand's upper thumb and nail. But like I said, it's really a beautiful and I don't mean to take away from the power this piece has. :)

Oh, Sue, you're right. It looks a bit glaringly white here to me, too! I think in real life the white is more cream and the cream is more yellow, if you know what I mean. The shape of the palm on the left hand is odd and I don't quite know how to change it, and don't want to fiddle with it too much. I may just tweak the edge a little, if anything, but when I mess with these gestural paintings too much they lose their charm. I guess it's expressive enough even though I'm not 100% happy with it. Instead of messing too much I think I'll just paint more of these and then pick the best ones, you know?

Thanks for your comments! Glad you like it.

This brings beseeching, pleading to mind, laying onself open to refusal but hoping for acceptance? Very beautifully done, the hands aren't weak at all, but strong and that much more poignant somehow.

Lovely satin there! And the bottle! Zowee! Very nice and mysterious, too. Is that a love potion in the bottle or poison, perhaps? And who's it intended for? Is it an aphrodesiac for some reluctant lover? A drug to induce forgetfulness? Geez, could be ANYthing!

Hi, I just signed up for the pastel project I got some new pastels th other day and I'm dying to try them out. Is there a certain time our pieces have to be in by and how do we place them on the web. This is all very new to me.

Hi Tegan! Welcome to the Pastel Forum! On the blue bar above, just under the Wet Canvas logo there is a pull-down menu - look in there for the "Art Project System" - click on that and it will take you to the appropriate place to sign up for this Project. This takes you to the whole Project system that shows you all the Projects (these are really fun to scan through). If you want to skip right to Mary's Project, at the bottom of her description in this thread, there is a "Click Here for more info" which will take you right into her Project directly to sign up. You actually have a month, but can always post later than that - these Projects do stay open indefinitely.

Hope you have fun!

I like how the sun is reflected in the water, just peeking up over the tree tops. Blue really does set the tone for lots of different moods. This one looks like a quiet morning sunrise and I can almost hear the birds just starting to greet the new day.

First, these are very well rendered...hands can have so many endless poses and these are from a difficult perspective as well. I like all the colors that go together here to create skin tones. I'm still trying to figure out that trick.

Now for the mood, I see reaching out with passion which I guess is another way of saying prayer but there is also a giving quality here.

OOOOOO! Mary, look at those beautiful green tones. They look just like what I saw in the early morning over in Port Angeles. You have definitely presented that early morning mystique where the day ahead could hold all posibilities (but probably rain where you live, tee hee!). Is this done with an underpainting?
