Ok, folks......I need some feedback on this. In my first ever art class we were assigned to drawing on the subject of "openings". It was left wide open...no guidelines or anything. So this is what I came up with. So any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!!! Thanks to all of you......

I will be the first one to admit that I'm not good with abstract (compared to landscapes, still life, etc.) images, can you explain more to me what you were trying to accomplish and what the different effects were supposed to be i.e. what is the piece supposed to be an opening of? I apologize for my lack of understanding...

Ivyleaf & TeAnne.....Thanks for responding to this.....I've had to think about your questions. This assignment was wide-opened so I just started drawing a huge boulder, then put a hole in it and it just took on a life of itself. A "feeling" drawing......like stepping thru a rough time and coming out on top.....survival....not giving up.....etc. etc. Does this make any sense????

I think it's very effective as an 'opening'! I do like the treatment of the boulder. Great shading! If you crop of the bottom portion (say just to the very bottom tip of the 'opening') it looks like a female head with the opening for the face!

I thought at first too of a woman's head, her face opening to a hopeful, but blank soul.

If you want it to be a boulder, a boulder it should be! I think it didn't appear to me that way, as a boulder to me is made up of lots of blues and grays, and I think of a boulder as being very round.

That's the best I can do, hope it helps!
