A new project has been announced in the WetCanvas! project system!

Title: Breaking waves
Project Leader: Alan Cross
Relative Difficulty: Irrelevant
Type Restrictions: Any Type
Medium: Any Medium
Subject: Seascape
Days open for signups: Always
Maximum participants allowed: Unlimited

Description:

Let's show the power of the ocean....what I would like to see is just waves coming into the land. Make the rocks and waves the main part of the painting . Skies and boats are also ok but concentrate on the waves and rocks....Please stick to new works. Any size or medium is fine.

Additional Information:

For more information on the project: Click here! (http://www.wetcanvas.com//Community/Projects/index.php?cmd=view_details&proj_id=696)

Remember, in order to help keep the discussions on projects organized, you should post your questions, suggestions, and comments on submitted work here in this thread. By doing this, we allow other non-project efforts to not get "pushed down" by a swarm of project-related threads.

Alan--thanks for starting this project just when I had a painting that fits so well! ;) This is a collage that I had fun with. I was inspired by a photo from the Image Library (I cannot remember the photographer at this time) but went another direction that is semi-abstract using the image of the great wave from the famous Japanese wood cut breaking not on the small boat of fishermen but on the rocky shore.
Sorry for the funny little white cresent in the upper left corner. My photo editor is doing funny things when I crop and resize.
I also hope that since this is semi-abstract that it will fit in the marine forum and this project.

Alan, Marty: thanks for the comments - I like the last one 'wave6' most too (followed closely by the black and white one 'wave2').

Interesting comment. The following is about waves in general, not particularly about my picture. I guess you have in mind the kind of waves that surfers like: steep, curling over at the top, and becoming thin before they break. Viewed from low down, you'll see the sky shining through the top of the wave (more like my 'wave6'). But most waves that I see break before they get very steep or thin, and the view in my picture is from about level with the wave top, and that usually makes waves darker near the top. See attachments.

Hi Graham,
You make a very good point. Waves are endlessly fascinating because they are always moving and changing and to freeze them in place whilst still acknowledging their fluidity is always a challenge.
The dark/light areas are quite interesting. In the trough or flat of the wave the incident light reflects to the viewer in such a way that often what the viewer sees is the reflected colour of the sky with the values changed. As the wave steepens the angle of incidence changes, and more internal refraction also occurs. In the deeper water swells you refer to this results in a darker colour as it is generally not the sky being reflected but internal parts of the wave or reflections of sky reflections - the net result in this case is dark areas of the wave. In shallow water this internal refraction often makes it possible to see areas of the bottom (reef, sand, seaweed etc) through the wave as the light bounces off the bottom and then refracts out the wave face. In deep water you just get the light bouncing off particles in the water, so you effectively get water colour, which is dark. Then we can get in to steep waves, front lighting, backlighting, side etc etc, lots of fun and many opportunites for lots of work to come.
What I am saying is you are quite right!
I think it was the close up nature off your work which threw me. In any event, your work is marvelously fluid and a pleasure to see.

http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/Projects/lib/696/completed/15484/tn_Ocean666.jpg

Hi Jan,
Despite your misgivings this has turned out very well, the splash is actually quite good. I'll give you my tip on how I do foam and spray and maybe that will help with any trouble for next time. I work in acrylic,so this may not apply to all mediums. As with most work, I go from dark to light values. For foam I usually use UM blue and titanium white. I apply a little blue, more white and mix on the canvas in a swirling motion. The blend results in light and dark areas. Over this I dab Titanium white with a piece of foam, suggesting lines of splash. A little practice and it comes out quite well. For the spray, I lightly wash over white, then when dry, I dry scumble white over the spray area, in a circular brush motion - don't go too heavy with the white, you want a transparent effect. This usually gives a good spray effect. Hope this helps.

Jet, I resized and reposted Rocky Shore, but it's still small in the final results. I overwrote the previous version, and don't even have the small version on my computer anymore. I don't know why this won't work, but have included it as an attachment here. It doesn't show up in the Preview Post, but maybe it will still work.
I'm still confused about the different size limitations for attachments, uploads and projects. Is the 500 pixel limitation always for the width?

Hi Regina,
This is very, very good, one of those works where the background really reinforces and amplifies the focal point and makes it a really special piece.

I think I finally have it posted properly. I've been looking at the other pieces, commented on some and then decided I would never get any painting done if I commented on everything. I have a very old, very slow computer! I don't mean to slight anyone... all of the paintings are so exciting; I love to watch the sea.

Regina , Hi!..
It looks much better, i still believe it looks better in real life !!

About width and heigth ...the max are 500x600 pixels and file size is 150 kbytes...
