For those of you interested in juried shows, you might want to check out the Washington Printmakers Gallery (www.washingtonprintmakers.com). They have a call for entries for the Washington Printmakers National Small Works 2004. The show will run July 27 to August 22, 2004.

If interested in entering or if planning a trip to DC, check out that website...

Thanks for the info Diane. I have decided to start showing some of my work. I entered 3 pieces, one drawing, one oil painting and a woodcut, in a juried competition in Rome. Entry deadline is June 1. Submissions are by email, no slides only digitally submitted images accepted. I costs about $30 for 3 images. If anyone is interested, I can post the website.

Thanks for the information Diane and Ari. Does the show in DC accept out of state work?

Yes.... The prospectus says "open to any artist of 18 years or over residing in the United States. All work must be original prints, completed within the last two years, no photography."

It also gives the size limitations etc. The hold up for most interested people is that, like most juried shows, you must submit slides.

For those of you who have never had slides taken, they really need to be really professional looking. Most important is that nothing but the image be visible in the slide... no chairs or grass or fingers, etc. When I do them myself I use a large piece of black mat board that I attach the work to. That way if there is any 'other' stuff showing, it's black and not a distraction to the juror.

I use a piece of heavy black cloth draped over a piece of plywood
here is what a photoghapher friend of mine told me to do
take your slide photos outside when the sun is directly overhead
use a tripod if available
make sure that your art is inline with the camera (squared up so that nothing is skewed left, right or up,down
it sounds fairly simple but the first time I tried I got maybe two good slides from a roll of film
if you can afford it ,its much better to let a proffessional do it and have all the art you are intrested in showing done at one time
oh and getat least two slides per piece because some shows will want to keep them for future reference (don't ask me why ) and you might want to show a piece more than once
its also a good idea to have a good digital file .I just spoke to a gallery last week that previews work to be considered thru online jpeg images or cds
hope this helps someone

Z...

There is a company that makes slides from digital files. I've never used it but it certainly seems worth a try.... www.iprintfromhome.com. There might be some others out there.

If I can get my act together, I'm going to try and see just how easy it is... It certainly seems easier than shooting a whole roll of slide film and waiting a week or so to process it.

Let me know, anyone out there, if there is another company that also does this...

I take some pretty darn good pics of my work. I wonder if slides can be made from a cd. Anyone know?

Very easily. Most good photo processing places will do slides from CDs or even digital files emailed in. My own local place I email my files to them and pick up the slides a couple days later. You just have to check first to find out what dimensions, resolution and file format they demand to produce them, to ensure you get the best result without cropping or excess borders.
