I know the "rule" about twos in a composition, but I think this one works. I'll let this one go to seed (just no where near my flower beds) and plant them along the edge of the woods for next year.

I have never seen a flower painting I love more than this. No kidding.
Perfection
It is so beautiful I feel like crying when I look at it.
Edit to say...It has been an emotional day (in my defense of wanting to cry at a beautiful painting) my dad spent the morning in the ER. He is ok.

Now those are absolutely fantabulous. You really do amazing flowers. The twos work, the color works, everything is just right the way it is.

Excellent! You certainly can do flowers and do them exceedingly well.

Just having gotten done watching "Sister Wendy" analyzing paintings to death - she would say this was a male and female making love to each other - :D

lol Kat- so is it the female who's turned her back?? I dunno- she has awfully long tails- not that size matters.... lol

I did notice on my less-hybred columbines (they're more like nasty weeds up here- hard to get rid of once they get established in a garden) that not only do they lose varigation each year, they also get more tangled, more tenacious in their hold on each other. Those "tails" are kind of "hooked" on the very ends, and the blossoms will "hook" each other in a tangle- I imagine it's good for the non-flying pollination insects (bees and such don't like to go down into flowers' "throats"- beetles and such do that better. Bees like wider spread, flat flowers better). Dunno- just makes zoological sense.

I'll save seeds for you, Mary- just don't plant 'em too close to anything you really like.

Thank you Angie- and I understand about emotional days. Have some chocolate, and accept my wishes for a speedy recovery for your Dad.

Ok, but if I plant them in Virginia next to my ex, I'll never get to see them :p

I too, think these are your best to date....... Gorgeous SBJ ...... I have these growing in my garden, but mauves, lilacs and pinks

hahahahaha!! Very clever, Mary! Knew I liked you for some reason....

Yeah, Dawn, this particular one is hybrid to within an inch of its life- they are not so bi-coloured in the wild. Most of mine have gone back to a lavender/mauve, but I've one that is really dark still, and seems to almost be "doubled" in the inner petals- but I 'spect it'll revert in a year or so, too. Thank you, too- I'm very pleased with this piece.

Reminds me more of a lover's spat....she turns away....he hangs his head in sorrow.....she looks back....well, you know how that goes! :)

Perhaps do a single for a pair of paintings! Put the 'other woman' alone! This is beautiful and obviously you have a wonderful eye for florals!

When I saw the title of this post, I thought no way, no one could paint those delicate little flowers. Was I wrong! This is absolutely amazing and forget the rules, it's just superb. Eveything about it sings.

We have those same wild columbine as you and I was out hiking today and they are blooming along the roadside. I have one in my garden, but it hasn't taken over - too much else to compete with.

Congrats, SBJ.

Oh! Thank you all- Carly, Katherine, Tom- wow- I never expected this- they're just some flowers I liked. I actually worried someone would yowl about the greeny-yellow background but I wasn't gonna give an inch on it- they glowed too nicely against it.

Tell your son to remember these odd kinds of flowers, Lisa, they'll keep him outta trouble with his future wife more easily than the usual roses :D

lol- Thanks, Ed. Want some chocolate-covered macadamias? They're almost gone here.

Just goes to show that rules are made to be broken. This wouldn't be nearly so great with three, or one. It's a powerful composition, beautifully done. And I love the greeny yellow background, you're right, it just makes them pop.

What I can't figure out is how to pick them when they are on the computer screen. they are fine enough to just reach out and grab but i keep bumping into the glass on the monitor.

Julie - SUPERB!!!! I love the delicate touch you have and the colors you've incorporated in this wild beauty.

Magnificent work and I agree - the best we've seen from you. Barb

The rule against "twos" doesn't apply here since they are differing views and angles. Their shape would make more...and maybe even just one a lot more awkward since they're so complex, too. Lovely colors...we used to have yellow and lavendar-blue ones (Colorado state flower--the tiny wild ones), but the drought has killed them off. I'm lucky to have a few violets back this year. Ah, well, I have a black thumb anyway....not a gardener except through benign neglect.

This is gorgeous and I LOVE that green background!

SweetBabyJ,

This is just lovely. You should do a calendar of florals. I'd buy it.

Annette, my son and I are moving to D.C. in 2 weeks, so I've been watching the cicada reports at washingtonpost.com. We get them every year here in New Mexico. Their buzzy sound serenading me to sleep on hot summer nights is a long-standing memory. I hope you post your cicada painting here -- I'd love to see it.

*blush* Thank you all- I'm well-pleased with the piece myself. I almost started one of a single flower against the sky- and may still do that one- but the duality of these two struck me, so it got done first. *shrug* S'pose I should upload a bunch into the ref lib since I've taken so many pics of them- lol

Dawn, When I first moved here, the front flower bed was pretty much just ivy and columbine- I've whittled it down to ivy and THREE columbine- and whack away at that darned ivy every single year. I don't know which is harder to control !

Sometimes I think there are too many rules and this painting sure proves that the rules are not always right. I think the two work very well together because of the positioning. And the imagination can dream up storylines as Carly did. The coloration here is magnificent!

I used to see these, in yards in Colorado.. I think the shadows make this special in my eyes.

You've managed to capture not only the colors, the graceful form, but the addition of shadow to the petal and spurs, as well as those half hidden leaflets at the base...

The background was a perfect color counterpoint choice.

Even on my best day, when I could still draw, I could never have done this. I'm not even sure I could have photographed the flowers to equal this... not without one helluva lotta work.

Simply outstanding!

I know the "rule" about twos in a composition...
Well, then I say "to H#!! with the rule" because by breaking it, you have a very lovely painting. I admire artists who do not conform or will not be boxed in by the so-called rules... and even more so by those who by their own contrary actions create something truly fabulous. Your work is to be admired and enjoyed.

Paint 2 more!

Julie, I love the way you've brought the flowers into sharp focus. This is so delicate and pretty and has an appealing sense of warmth and even sexiness about it.

Julie, this painting is really striking, it just glows and jumps off the screen, I bet its even better in person. I'm one of those who don't usually follow the rules, actually I don't know them, and even if I know them I don't usually remember them when I paint, sometimes there is an instinctual (is this a word?) quality we have and use when we paint, and I think that is what we need to follow most often. This is beautiful.

Thank you Dirk- they're lovely flowers

ElG- you honor me far too much

Thank you Wendy- I'm working on more

Thanks Sandy- I kinda like it, too

Flowers are sexy in many ways, EJ- to me, the rose has nothing on these, or Irises, or callas for "romance" potential

It does glow, PJ- almost lurid- I was surprised at how well it pops off the green- I thought the yellow would meld it in more. I was wrong.

Thank you Eileen- I'm well-pleased

Thanks, Paddy- I'm glad you like it.

So I am late to hop on this boat, but OMG!!!! This is awesome! That green is so bold and expressive - very unusual and so great.
Really fantastic.

I have been trying to grow these frowers from seed for years now and they keep on dying on me. Just found out they grow as weeds in my mother-in-law's backgarden........it ain't fair ! :crying: ......maybe I'll just keep looking at your picture......maybe I should show my seedlings your picture and tell them that that's what they are supposed to look like!

This is a brilliant painting.
