I know this is probably a silly question, but what exactly do you say in an artist statement. Can any one give me examples of what to include? Help!

There are some great threads on statements in the Art Business forums! Here's a couple of resources I gleaned a while ago:

Also,
ask others what they think about when they view your work, how it makes them feel, etc. Finding out how the audience perceives your work can be incorporated into your artist statement.

I often hear things like....I wish I could be there or That reminds me of a place I've been. I used that idea in my artist statement to say that my art creates an emotional response within the viewer.

Let someone ask you questions about your art and write out words and phrases for the answers....

How do you feel when you paint?
What subjects are you most drawn to?
Describe your paintings with emotional words....like, joyful, gloomy, etc.
What do you try to communicate with your work?

You will come up with more ideas....but keep your statement fairly short. It should tell the world why you paint what you paint....more than the how of your painting.
