Baquitania's Rossetti drawing got me thinking about an old piece that I did while I was at college and studying the Pre-Raphaelites, so I dug it out. This was one of my first ventures into oil painting and painted alla prima. I must have liked it though, 'cause it's the only painting I've kept that's more than four years old.

Proserpine, after Dante Gabriel Rossetti, 15ins x 6ins, oil on paper.

Gareth, thank you for sharing this with us. After viewing your profile, and checking out your more recent work, I can see that you have softened your palette quite a bit! :)

Why not try this one again, using all the knowledge and experience you have gained since your college days? I'd like to see how you would handle it now. I double-dog dare you! :D

aaaaaahhhhh...one of my favorites of Rosetti. You did a great job; I agree with Mom, give it (or another of Rosetti) a try again. The second time around is always better. Can I ask how long ago you painted this? Its held up well on paper; what kind of sizing did you use?

It is a bit on the bright side isn't it, hardly the last glimmer of light as the underworld envelops her, haha.

Maybe I should try another, but at the moment I'm just way too busy painting for a couple of exhibitions I've got coming up, the deadlines are closing in like walls, but I'm not rushing anything. I'd rather give them less work and be sure it's good.

This was done about five or six years ago Vince (when I was 26). I didn't even know what size was, in a painting context at least, when I did it, so the paper is unsized. There's no medium at all in the paint either, just gloop out of the tube.

Hi Gareth,

No wonder you kept this one. I like it. :D

I also looked at you website. You do very beautiful work.
I am very impressed.

Any chance of a WIP coming our way? Or have you done one & I missed it.?

I would love to see how you go about your process.
