Well...finally he's here...hahaha...
ok tim...here is the dog WIP...
it's easyer than it looks...
Pic 1: this is the cover i made to transport my paintings to the demo's
pic 2: as you can see inside i can transport 9 paintings in here without damaging them.
pic 3: i took a piece of paper and torn a cirkel out of it...and yes ive got a lot of empty beer bottle's to keep everything in place.. :D
pic 4: I spray the basecoat with the colani....not all white but just enough...
pic 5: first i spray the yellow brown parts...after drawing everything with the pencil..

pic 6: after this i highlight everything with white..
pic 7: with the black i paint all the dark places...
pic 8:....ok...now the strange part starts...i use the white on the black to highlight the dark places...normaly almost nobody is doing this....even tim isn't doing this because you get a blue glow on the white...but thats just the color i need for the cattle dog...and it works great..
pic 9: i have given the background already the light green color for the grass..

well i hope it's clear...but any questions ?...

tim...you know what the problem is.....no offence...but you guy's are to perfect most of the time...
you make great art...no doubt about it...but you never let yourself go...
just like tim...it must be all perfect..and the portrets are perfect...but you see how easy it is....it's just like my aussie mate said...clear your mind and let the airbrush flow...hahaha...just relax..take a beer and paint...

Oh..... uhhhg....... can't ...... loosen....... up.....

feeling..... so ..... perfect....... argggggggggggggg!

Henk, ma, bro, your wip is giving me the heebie jeebies! It's so loose! heheheh

Yes, the blue effect can look cool SOMETIMES if you want a bluish haze or if you are painting on blue. On a human face as highlights it usually stinks, though. You have to TIGHTEN UP and use a more yellow/orange highlight to avoid that effect.

But I agree it works on those dogs that have some blue anyway.

Well, I'll loosen up someday. Looking good but your progress confused me. When did you sketch? Before the white base coat?? or after???

Actually un-corrected white works best for animal portraits.

I see that you are not brand loyal to your beer. You realize you are a marketing nightmare. :)

You live to create chaos don't you Henk.

You made the case for transporting your artwork? I wouldn't mind seeing a wip on that!

Thanks for the wip Henk, as always I enjoy your work.

well tim...this is the result of two hours painting....
today ive been to belgium for another cattle dog so im gonna paint tomorrow again....
and penny..the cover is very easy...i made this box 60x73x30cm...
the opening is on the top and on the inside i made these little wooden pins 3cm apart...i can put 9 paintings in there of the size 50x70cm..
i give a lot of demo's at dog events here in holland and i take these paintings with me to show as example and maybe if someone is interested i can sell them...

henk..

oh..here a picture of the puppy we bought in belgium...

Puppies are so cute. I wonder if I got another dog ... what would mine think? heehehehhe He's getting old (8.5 yrs) but if I could stay with him and pupster at first they'd be okay. Man... not another potty training!!! heheheh my dog took so long to learn. But he finally figured it out.

Say, how many dogs do you have?

Are you going to paint this one?

hey tim the 8th of may we can get him..and then we have 3 cattle dogs and 2 dachshunds...
a few years ago we got 8 dogs...so this isn't that much then...hahaha..
and yes i will surely paint this one as well...this is our first red Heeler...he's only missing one ear after a little accident...so i m gonna try to paint him with two ears....just to see how he would look...

well...time to sleep over here, it's almost 12 o'clock......tomorrow i will paint again and place some more pics...
i think it will be finished in 5 or 6 hours...

Not just Tim's problem I have a big problem of ' just letting it flow' and going, the one horse I did I was watching my daughter and this kid (boy) I didn't like the way he was behaving so I wasn't really paying attention to my painting, and a shark I was mad about something and was more just working it out in my head while I shot paint both where just black and white. But when I go to 'paint' I do get into that perfection thing and not knowing what steps and what if I make a mistake etc etc... No undo on that canvas! Knowing about it and doing something about it seems to be two different things LOL

hey milo,
thanks...and painting and kids...hmmmm...well thats something i won't do..
it's just like you said...you got your mind on the kids instead of the painting...
offcourse at demo's there are always people who would ask you something...but i always stop painting and after the talk i just need to fix myself again on the painting again.......
at home, i will be alone in my studio...just me...my cigarets...and a beer and good music....and just relax and paint...
and making a mistake that's something i never worry about...if it turns out bad...so what?...it's just a painting...paint it all white and start over again...

i paint for fun....and this painting has allready given me two hours of fun...
when your'e tyred after painting your doing something wrong...
most of the painters are all stressed up doing everything right....and when they have painted two or three hours they are tyred....
Painting helps me to relax and the only thing thats getting tyred are my eyes....or is this from the beer?...hahahaha....

Just some rambling thoughts by me.......

Well, I do not fall into the "stressed" category. When I paint, I do take it very seriously but the creation process is the same as any and that it why I like it. I do not sit and worry and stress out over it. It isn't anywhere close to that and if it was I'd be a miserable painter. But I do concern myself with tiny details and spend a lot of time on one painting.

But in the earlier stages of learning there is naturally more stress because you aren't very good and you are worried about mistakes because you assume it will ruin the painting(I still get that feeling sometimes), etc. As you get better your confidence and enjoyment increase and for me I have my stressful moments but overall it is a peaceful place in which I paint - maybe not as peaceful as yours!

As I learn more and mature at this art thing I will feel good about loosening up a tad. hehehehe But let me defend myself for now in this way (not that anyone is attacking me, but I feel a long rambling dissertation coming on! DOH).

I am TRYING to see how realistic I can make a portrait so that I can do the less realistic ones very easily. Analogy: if I practice lifting 500 pounds until I can do it, lifting 400 will seem easy.

I am seeing how real I can make my portraits now so I can say I've been to the mountaintop. Painting with a lot of control, forethought, planning, patience, etc. is harder than winging it. That isn't to say the results are always better though! But I feel in general, if you are wanting results that are a copy of a photo, you have to work hard at it and "tighten up" henk! hahahahahhaha

So, if you ever come to Memphis, TN, you can come by my house and you can drink beer, I can drink wine, we'll crank up some old rock music and we'll collaborate on a dog portrait! hahahahahahha WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Now that's loosening up! But look, I get to paint the nose. hehehehhehehehehe

Oh, and go outside to smoke. LOL!

Henk, you do good work, man, so don't get tricked into a false belief that all people doing what you think is better work are stressed or too tight or too serious. Look at me? hahhahahha If I was TOO serious I couldn't type "heehehhehehhehehehheh". See? Plus, I don't consider myself better than you. I have a lot to learn and you have done way more than I have. You have painted more, done it way faster, it looks great and you used...... COLOR! hehehheheeh

So, keep painting, henk and let us see the results! I really liked most of them: Cliff (prob my fav, he was so intent on getting there!), the cow and blue heeler, etc.

Goedendag!

hey tim...i will surely take that beer when i get there....hahaha...
it's hard to trust people on the internet...but you guy's here are allright...hahaha...

i know what you mean tim....and i didn't mean that you would be stressed up...but your worry to much about the details..but i can understand this...
it just don't work for me...i want to relax and paint this works best for me...and if i use a beer or a sigaret it doesn't matter...
there was a time that i send my painting to Gaz and JW to see how they would like it....but they are two wise man...and soon i learned that it doesn't matter what other people think about your art...it's just what you think about it...

well tim..here is the next episode...
pic 10: ive done the grass...i don't say to much about it...just with grass and using some green colors , yellow , white and brown...
pic 11: i painted the eye...first brown...fill it up with black for the pupil and shade...and give it that glassy effect with white...
pic 12: lighten up the real white places with white ( read more detail )
pic 13: using the yellow brown to give those places more detail...
pic 14: at last the black again to detail everything more and fill in the real black places...

HF AIRBRUSH
04-25-2004, 04:04 PM
pic 15: just a close up...
tomorrow the clear coat and it's finished..
today i spend just 1,5 hour on it....so the time i used is in total 3,5 hour...

as you can see the painting isn't foto realistic, but im happy with it...this is just my style...and leaving out a lot of detail makes the watcher using his own imagination....hahaha...

ok....at last the picture i used as example....

Henk,

I think you have a good attitude about it and yes, you are right about leaving out details as it regards the viewer's imagination. It happens a lot in novels but less in pics and videos. The tendancy is to spell it all out and for some that ruins it because they can't imagine as much nor can they fill in the blanks how they want.

That ref pic was a tough one to paint. The body of the dog was in an unusual shape. I think you did a great job no matter what Gaz says about you. hehehehheheheheheheh

Yes, I need to experiment more. That is no lie.

Well, catch ya later and thanks for posting the wip!!!!!

hey sam thanks...i will look for a photo and i will send it to you....
i love to see someone else painting dogs...this way i can learn from others they technice...

and tim, thank you to..this one was painted very quick, with the clearcoat it isn't more than four hours, but when i paint with more detail it will take me longer...hahaha...
I know you paint with only black and white till now...just use some cheap paper and try some colors...im sure your gonna love it...

oh...sam...what kind of dachshund do you want to paint?...longhaired or wirehaired?...

Henk, your doing a wonderful job on this. What is the actual size of the dog?

Sam, of course I'm ignoring you, it appears everyone is ignoring you lately and as for myself, lately, I am ignoring everyone as well :) It's not intentional, honest.

Henk, I love all the photos you sent, but I'm partial to the one of the Dachshund that's on the fence rail! I will email you with a few questions.
Yes, I want to start painting more dogs!

hey penny,
the cover is 60x70cm...so the circle would be something like 55cm i think...

sam...that would the red one i think...that was the dog of my wife...

ok..here is the final pic...after the clearcoat...i used carpaint to clear it...
now i can start on the other side...im thinking about making a pillow on top of it so i can use it to sit on when i paint at a demo...

Henk, the cover turned out awesome! It's amazing to me how clear coat just makes a painting pop!

Yes, it's the red Dachshund sitting on the fence rail or gate! Do you think your wife would like a painting of her?

Sam

HF AIRBRUSH
04-26-2004, 05:29 PM
Hey sam, yes the clearcoat is the finishing touch...makes the colors deeper and the painting is a lot differend....im really happy with the result...i use it on demo's so it is my business card...

and yes i think my wife would love it...it's only a he...and not a she...the dog that is..hahaha...
and im sure it would get a place here on the wall...next to the paintings of my aussie mate...
