A new project has been announced in the WetCanvas! project system!

Title: Watercolor Haiku
Project Leader: Marquisina
Relative Difficulty: Irrelevant
Type Restrictions: Painting
Medium: Watercolor paints
Subject: Other
Days open for signups: Always
Maximum participants allowed: Unlimited

Description:

Paint a watercolor inspired by any of the following haiku poems. Your interpretation, not necessarily in any particular style. Just let the feelings flow!

Haiku poetry by Isaa (1763-1827)

1.Come over with me
and together let\'s play
Oh, motherless sparrow.

2.My native village
on approach and to the touch
a bramble rose.

3.The radish puller
pointing with a radish root
teaches me the way.

4.The New Year comes
and instead of plum blossoms
a great storm of snow.

5.From the lake
springing up into the sky
the clouded peaks.

6.Smokes the waterfall
and even seen close at hand
the cherry flowers are clouds.

Good luck and have fun!! I\'m looking forward to seeing your paintings!

:D An image popped into my head when reading this Haiku

2.My native village
on approach and to the touch
a bramble rose.

Could see an aiplane window with a view of the ground below, and on the little table a rose...

I actually started to sketch it yesterday (without a reference image  ) - I think it might work, so I signed up and will try to give it a go... :)

Here's my WIP - It's only a rough first version, done without any reference - I'm aware there are a few mistakes , but I just wanted to test if I could sketch and capture the scene I had in mind... :)

Cotman pans
Langton paper 8x12 inches

I'm not much of a watercolourist. But I'm going to force myself to do a watercolour by participating in theis project. I've chosen to illutrate this haiku:
Smokes the waterfall
and even seen close at hand
the cherry flowers are clouds.

Nice work on the entries so far, looking forward to seeing the rest.

Whatever happened to this project? What a lovely idea for a project, and what a shame that of 10 people who signed up, only 2 were able to submit any work.

I've recently become interested in (read "obsessed" with) egg tempera painting and have done a few (5) pieces. I decided to check out your water media projects to give my motivation a boost (being pretty much all alone in here with egg tempera---what?...egg tempura?, no--altho' many could relate more to that (yum!) but, alas, it's egg tempera.) I've begun grinding my own pigments and am utterly enthralled with the process. Why? I dunno. Guess I like things complicated.....:D

Anyway, this was the first project that I looked at in the Index and I've signed up. I will endeavor to complete my interpretations of some of the haiku examples. Anyone else care to give it another go?

Great!! It didn't seem to generate much interest so I thought the idea was maybe a dumb one! LOL!! Glad you're in, I'll finish mine now too!!!

So far everybody has taken the obvious one - figured I'd break the mold.

This is doubtless the quickest painting I've ever done - about five minutes not counting waiting for the masking fluid and wash to dry.

All right - who is going to do the radish one?

Wow Fagan you have done really nicely!

Love the hint of reflection in the water of the trees and buildings. And the cloud/fog. All done wonderfully.

Doing a sparrow painting now. Be up, hopefully within the week.

Wow! what an incredable feeling from this painting!
Loneliness and wanting. Your reflections are great. And those clouds! How do you do the fog?

Well here's my entry so far.
Come over with me and together lets's play oh, motherless sparrow.

Gouache with caligraphy felt and pen.

Found an illuminated manuscript book I was working on. Only one other page done and the front/back covers. I thought I'd use this project to get me motivated in doing it again. I'm going to hand bind it in the japanese binding style with gold DMC embroidery thread once finished.

I have the detail photo of the sparrow too in the project gallery if you wish to see it. :D

it is a great idea and very inspiring project Marqui!
I start with:
5. From the lake
springing up into the sky
the clouded peaks.

I tried to do it in just a few brush strokes
like haiku
