Finally got to paint, it feels like ages! Its 8 x 10, knife, perm. red, ultramarine blue white and cad. yellow pale. I wanted to see how I could do with not much of anything. I squeezed some paint on the palette and went outside with the knife, paper towels and panel. I did have to go back in the house and get some more blue and red, I was surprised how much red I needed, I normally use very little. I had lots of white left. Here is me painting, the painting and the view. Its my husband's new brick path, we got a couple of loads of discarded bricks. Critiques? Lorijo

Hi Lorijo, Nice job. I have to try more knife work this year, you and Wayne make it look easy. It looks warm there, wish I was.

Nice work Lorijo...I admire any one who does the entire image with a knife. That puppy must weigh a pound!!! :D

I've mentioned to others that the one thing that I am not nuts about concerning the Permanent Red M is that it is weak in pigment strength, and it takes a lot of it to alter Ultramarine blue. I am considering either Napthol red or Winsor Red, both stronger, less paint used. On the other hand, Perm.Red M is sublte enough not to become too overpowering too soon. The other thing is that Rembrandt is the only manufacturer who has a perm. red med. at this point. Inevitably with art supplies, as soon as you find something that works, it's discontinued. So I'm thinking I might try to make a pigment work that I know can be found from several different sources so that Im not left out in the cold someday.

Thanks Tony and Marc. Tony its perfect at the moment, 78 degrees! Oh my, I should be out there right now instead of running between here and the kitchen, the light is beautiful!

Marc, I liked the perm. red, but you are right, you do need a lot. I want to try some different reds now, a couple of months ago it was oranges! My perm. red was an ancient tube of Brera, not sure if they even make that red any more. Lorijo

Lorijo - looks like you got alot out of it - including a green thumb! Love your brick path!

Uh oh server busy - this will either appear twice or not at all.

Lori, well it certainly doesn't look like you were lacking for color, even with that limited palette! I too found I used quite a bit of the Rembrandt Perm Red Med, which is actually a mix of two pyrrole reds. Last night I did some mixing experiments with Perylene, which is far more transparent and swings easily to alizarin with the addition of ultramarine. 'Think I'll give that one a go today to finish up the painting I started yesterday.

I love the path that your hubby put in.

Jamie I was just asking you about that red in the other post. I could use one that goes to alizarin. The little dark plants are wandering jew and moses in the boat, both nice purples and red-purples. I would have liked them less muted. Lorijo

gutsy and courageous I'd say with that wielding of the knife....bravo!

...and the limited palette wasn't so painful after all was it? hahaha....

The more I'm hearing about the red pigment issues, the more I wonder if I'm not just lucky right now to have found my Grumbacher Bright Red and if I shouldn't stick with it.

I picked it up last year doing some plein airs of a coastguard station lighthouse in upper Michigan. A man made painted structure with reds I was not able to imitate from my regular palette 'till I picked this one up. Its worked good for me so far...and I've not had to go thru a ton of it.

Only time will tell...but maybe the G.Bright Red will cut it for me....
I'll be watching what you fine folks discover...(there I go trying to save a few bucks again!)

Interesting about the reds I always have trouble with them. I will try the G-bright red.
I love that you got out in the garden isn't it wonderful hearing the birds sing as you paint.
I like your painting very much too.

I see Grumbacher Red on the Grumbacher spec sheet. It's napthol red, PR112. But I don't see a Grumbacher "Bright Red" on their pages.

Thanks Larry, Cap and Jamie, and the limited palette wasn't so painful after all was it? hahaha Not painful at all, I had fun! Now I got to add another red to my shopping list!

Thanks Cap, it is nice hearing the birds, we have a lot of cardinals right now.Lorijo

Interesting that you used the same limited palette colors that Larry and Jamie were experimenting with and yet still managed to maintain the Lorijo South Florida look which is totally different than their end of the winter in the North look. Good job.

I'm hostage in Green Bay for the moment, will be home sometime on Friday and will check. Hope I'm not steering anyone wrong. Perhaps its W&N Bright Red...but I could have sworn Grumbacher.

Hmmm....turn 50 this summer. Maybe its time to start stickin to one brand so I remember what I'm working with! hahaha...

what an ordeal today. Went to Green Bay to get a couple new BAJA widetrack tires for my 4whl take me anywhere to paint truck, and the caliper seized up. Both rotars warped in front tire end, and needing replacing...plus one caliper. So with the tires and all, it was a $600 day. Hhhmmm...now, just what all could I have got on my painter's wishlist with that! Ugh.....

...well, spose I should be thankful. I've got my take me anywhere to paint truck back into a state of assurance and compliance.
