Alan Cross

A new project has been announced in the WetCanvas! project system!

Title: Stormy Skies Over the Ocean
Project Leader: Alan Cross
Relative Difficulty: Irrelevant
Type Restrictions: Painting
Medium: Any Medium
Subject: Seascape
Days open for signups: Always
Maximum participants allowed: Unlimited

Description:

Lets see your stormy skys! Add boats, waves, beach, rocks, and of course clouds....Lets see some real fury. Everyone has problems with clouds, so this is a good chance to work on that. Try to make us hear the wind and waves hitting the rocks.

Sorry no digital manipulations/photographic for this project. You may use any other medium in which you work or try a new one.

To keep this project fresh and get new ideas, please submit only new work. There is no time limit on this one, so post when you are finshed with your new work, showing us your progress pics along the way.

Also if you have any good stormy photos, send them to me and I will upload them for everyone to paint; uploading them into the RIL would be even better...Any questions just ask! Looking forward to seeing your storms.....
Alan

Thanks to h20color, writes4me, ladybug lane, pawlee and redwood for the RIL reference photos

Additional Information:

For more information on the project: Click here! (http://www.wetcanvas.com//Community/Projects/browse_details.php?proj_id=668)

Remember, in order to help keep the discussions on projects organized, you should post your questions, suggestions, and comments on submitted work here in this thread. By doing this, we allow other non-project efforts to not get \"pushed down\" by a swarm of project-related threads.

Ohh, I'm definitely gonna have to sign up for this one! I found some awesome ocean storm photos on webshots.com that I'm using for my lighthouse series so will use a few of them for this project. Also have some lovely photos from the Volvo Ocean Race back in 2001-2002.

My list of "Paintings to Do" just keeps getting longer! Woo-hoo!

Hi Alan,

If they were my photos I would but don't think I should upload them because of copyright issues. There is a really good website though that is great for reference photos (besides the WC!IL of course). It's http://www.webshots.com. They have galleries there that you can download and use as wallpaper and then also community galleries. This is really great because if you have the photo as wallpaper you can hide your shortcuts and then do a screen capture and print it out. Gives you a good resolution to work from. Works great!

I think prints are fine as long as you are still carving the material....can you do a stormy print?? I don't see that as being a problem....I was really just trying to stay away from to much digi work...so go for it!!

Ok, So I take any challenge seriously- CAN I do a stormy sky in a print? I hope so, but we'll see- I have the preliminary drawing done, and will probably be working WAY too late on the block tonight... Oh well... Coming up with a way to portray the movement and emotion of a stormy ocean within the limits of a single color releif print has been interesting, but I think I might have it!

Fantastic project. Love stormy skies, but they're so difficult to portray. I'm lucky enough to live on the ocean too, so as long as those ole clouds start rolling in (*far gaze at the horizon, not a cloud in sight*)

Great movement! And I love the colour of the sky/water - those purple-grey skies and grey green waves are so common and hard to depict.

Over here the clouds have rolled in and it is grey grey grey! Very flat. Think I might just go get my paint box :D

Interesting! I see that you have some of the same challenges I do when making a print- Making it look stormy with limited color- Except you have even less that I do! I like how this looks... Different!

This is my first project, so I'm sure I've screwed it up. What did I do wrong, that it doesn't show up in this thread like the others do?

Yes, you're right, Alan.
(sorry for the delayed reply. At first, I didn't respond, as your suggestion that I try this took me by surprise....(i had sold myself on the excuse that this was for painting only). i'm very much a beginner, and am a little intimidated by the company here. but pondered it a couple of days, and decided to take it as a challenge.

(Then of course work dominated the rest of the all week). But here is the weekend (tra la la) ..so yes, am going to take you up on the "challenge" I think, um maybe...(ha.) If I'm brave enough to post.

I haven't looked at the gallery yet, was sort of debating on whether I want to look before I finish or not....can't wait to see though....

clouds. can't imagine how y'all do it with paint. tough. Believe I may have an advantage with drawing, graphite must be the perfect medium clouds...all shades of grey. (But the disadvantage of my lack of experience will probably more than make up for my advantage. hee).

Thank you for the invitation Alan & Rhi.

Do you paint in any other medium? I haven't tried oils (bit scary!)

Hi Erica,

Thanks! I paint in oils only; they are quite glorious to use - buttery, slickery. Yum. And forgiving - if you don't like it, it's easy to change an area, a whole painting. A newbie needs a lot of forgiveness! :D

10th project in two months. Wow! Good on ya.

Hi Mary-Ann,

I think this is done in watercolour, it very good.
The foam on the waves are fantastic, is this the white of the paper or is it from the pan/tube.
i wanna know why is there a pink glow on (is that from the scan?)

Well done, i wanna see more.!!!!! :)

Hi this is in regard to comments on ON PASSAGE.Thank you Allen foryour comments. Thispainting isenitrely ACRYLIC. I used the sky like a watercolor but used Acrylic paints. I wetted thesky area with water sprayed then dropped red, blueand white on thepaper and rolled the paint by tiltingthe paperuntil the desired effect wasachieved. I added morered and blue until I was satisfied. The bottom was pure acrylic paint. Worked thewaves until I was again satisfied. The Horizon is bluish I was tryingto create a squallline coming. Thanks alot Leo, it came out better than I thought it would, surprised me too. If you want to try one: I gessoed the matt board, lightly drew the composition, smeared on watercolor washes, let that dry, went in with more washes and pushed the stuff around to make the light areas.

Thanks Alan. I haven't been painting long and that is my first post. I have a great fondness for Canada having spent a year there in Toronto and working on the tobacco plantations in the (deep) south of Ontario. I am also very fond of Mike Svob's work and the Group of Seven, fellow countrymen of yours.
I was born on the Clydeside from generations of shipbuilders, some of whom helped build the great sailing ships and my father was a seaman.

I'm really looking forward to going to the West coast of Scotland at the end of this month. I'm booked on a course with Alvaro Castagnet at Culdorran and hoping to do some great paintings while I'm there :D

I don't know Culdorran but the west coast is beautiful and atmospheric. I hope you enjoy yourself!

I did it from imagination, no references. But I've lived on the coast of North Scotland (near Durness) for 20 years, and it's infiltrated my imagination pretty thoroughly by now. Mind you, someone else it was like Australia!

Thanks Nina and Alan for looking
The original series was painted in this order:
first painted: Thunbnail #4
Second: Th # 2
Third: Th # 3
Forth: Th # 1
Last: Th # 5

Sorry for not posting them in the correct order.
Now that you mentioned I also feel intersted in the order and why it was that way, made all at consecutive days, one day each one.
... still guessin why I painted them in that absurd order... LOL the posted order seems more congruent...

Hi All,
OK Alan, here is my attempt at a stormy night at sea with the moon overhead just beginning to peek through the break in the clouds....or at least that was what I attempted to paint here. This is my first attempt at foam patterns in the sea too so I'm still learning those. And yes, that is also wind blown spray at the top of the big wave...first time there too. Water is hard.....so is mood. After being frustrated with this piece while working on it between other art projects, I have gained a real appreciation for people who do this well. http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/24-Aug-2005/1949-Roughwater1.jpg Although you can't see it very good if at all, I added some Alizarin Crimson into my clouds this time from a suggestion on an earlier painting. It looks really good in that sky in person ( three dark areas in center) but didn't show up here to well. All C/C is gladly welcome no matter how brutal....haha! ( it is a relief to be done with this one....that probably means I'm not done at all huh? )

Hi Mary Ann,
Thanks for your thoughts here. I'm not crazy about this one and have to admit it looks much worse here than it does in person...more Neon I think. hahaha. I like the waves but I think it is too much white. I was trying to do water foam patterns for the first time but need much more work on that. Thanks again Mary Ann.

Having only just discovered your project I 've just tried to upload a recent plein air painting to it - but the image won't appear despite being the correct size.

This is the image

http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/10-Sep-2005/48045-WC_venicevista2.jpg

and this is what my entry says

I did this recently (May) - and I'll hope you'll excuse me not having generated it specifically for the project by the fact that I did actually do it as a "plein air" painting - sat by the side of the water in Venice. The day was grey and skies were spectacular! This is coloured pencil on Canson Mi Teintes paper and it's 8.25" v 23.5" and was done as two separate drawings which I've stitched together - as it was an intentional diptych (lots of very careful meauring to get the matched lines!)

Actually I've just remembered it got even more interesting as I endeavoured to get matched clouds!
