Hello Everyone! I read this board often, you can find a wealth of information on it.! Especially look at the Cherry Quartz posts...seems like there is a LOT of glass being pased off as quartz! I personally think some of it is pretty, but wouldnt pay that price bcz it looks like glass. anyhoo...

Hi Mary!

I have been following this subject with great interest. Lapidary Journal has been covering it, and all these new popular "fruit quartzes" (cherry, blueberry, etc.) are indeed glass and not quartz!

Mary, are you really exhibiting at Bead and Button? What is you booth number, I am so excited! Can't wait to drop by YOUR booth!!!

when i was in tucson last year, there was lots of glass being passed off as some sort of quartz or other stone. this year, i noticed that the tags on the bead strands read something like "SIM BLUE QUARTZ", or "SIM STRAWBERRY QUARTZ". i'm not sure if someone cracked down on these vendors, but at least there was some sort of indication (rather minor, in my book, but it's a start, i guess...) that the beads being sold were simulated and not real stone.

i haven't read the info out on the ganoksin site - i just haven't had enough time lately to peruse another board - but i recommended this site in the sticky thread that lists online jewelry resources. one of these days, i'll have some time to get back out there.

That's good to hear. At least they only got away with it one season, it sounds like. ("They" = the first vendors who brought this over from wherever, who first started this inaccuracy).

yep, and i've seen lots of jewelry being sold, on the internet and in catalogs and stores, that contains "such-and-such quartz" (where it's really glass) - very misleading. i have a coldwater creek catalog that includes a "cherry quartz" and peridot necklace - a buyer who isn't aware of this situation would think that the necklace is all stone. :(

Very true Shirley, i saw that too. :( It just makes me mad that they do this to us, but the best way to fight back is not to buy it! Or if you do to make sure they know you know it's glass. If it's a bead shop you frequent, print out the page on the quartz/glass to show them. many people are being taken and passing it on. Of course it isn't fair/ -mary

Does anyone know how to tell the diffrence between glass and the real thing? I sure don'tand I don't want to sell the glass AS the real thing!

Besides other tests, you can see small bubbles in the glass with or without a loop. Look on the site above and read how they tested it. -Mary

So I have to go to the archives? When I clicked on what I *thought* was the forum link, I just got this page about joining, and even after I joined, couldn't find it.

I used to be smarter than this.

That is a good question, I cant remember if I joined or not, obviously if you cant read them then maybe you might need to join?
