Hey!
I said a while back I'd try to do this with the new panels I was getting ready to start. Neither are finished yet, but I figured I'd show you some of the steps along the way so far. Both are 18 x 24's. I started out with the plain gessoed board (using acrylic gesso on these), and then I worked onto that with charcoal.
This one is Tree:

Then I went back into the charcoal with more gesso. I used a painting knife and a 5 in 1. This is a 5 in 1:

This one is Slight DiscorDance, after the gesso:

Aurorapope this is fantastic  I love how it came out. You can really have some fun doing different shapes and images with this kind of technique.

Some more gesso and charcoal:

and

Going into them with the oils, still using the 5 in 1 and the knife:

Then I let that dry. I had gone over the heavy dark lines with oils also, but I decided I wanted the lines to be skinnier, and more deeply embedded in the textured paint. Only Slight DiscorDance was dry enough to work yesterday, so I went back into it with titanium white, still scratching and scribbling and scraping. And here's where we stand now, while we watch paint dry.

I figure maybe tomorrow Tree will be dry enough to work some more too, and I'll post again after I mess with it some more.

They sell them in the paint department of the hardware store. Incredibly useful gadgets. They're good for scraping, opening cans, screwdriving, and even opening beer bottles. :) If you ever paint with a paint roller, you can also use them to help squish the paint out of them when you clean them. No home should be without.

Okay. I got em.
I went into Slight Discordance again with color. I think maybe one more layer of stuff on this one, and then hopefully it will be done. It's getting close.

And then I went back into Tree with white. I went ahead and picked up some of the alziron crimson with the white too, but I thinned the lines out.

hey babe...
i love these tools...with hubby being a painting contractor we have a few around.

you would be a great faux painter...as in doing decorative finishes on walls...
i mean this as a compliment as it is really hard to move beyond the happy homeowner stage!!!

i am so glad that you are showing us a wipping or two...i have wanted to see this for quite awhile... :D  :D

I'm with Ordie4. You're gonna cause a riot if you don't show more (of course, Ordie would like that because he could paint it!)

Oh wait . . . even as I type . . . Slight Discordance is getting the 'fussy roses' back into its cheeks. Yea yea yea!

It's a real treat to see how you work Aurora. The technique isn't what I expected (how do you manage to keep your colours so clean with all that charcoal?), which only serves to demonstrate further how little of the paintings we get when looking at a screen. I feel I have more of an idea already about how your paintings must look in the flesh from watching the development here and am more impressed than ever by them. I'll be watching this one for sure.

Sorry! Had to wait for the paint to dry, and then it was the weekend. I hardly ever have time to do any real painting on the weekends. But I finished them up today. Here ya go:

Slight DiscorDance:

ha! whatta surprise, we get a bonus one
and those swings *are*
moving by way of your strokes and color
very cool
the tree turned out bold spoken
I like
slight discordance is gentle
I think that suits the grace of the arc
though the black of the lines seems a bit lonely (?)
maybe a bit more dark in the field?
BUT
I think it's fine as is and I like them all mucho

Hey Z! Thanks for the looking and the typing. I got to looking at them after reading your post, and decided to add some darks to Slight DiscorDance, and some lights to Tree. So I guess they weren't finished after all. :)
Here be updates:

always surprising to me how a few lines, some texture and some color can be so evocative, so memorable, so wonderful.

to see where these started, your technique... and where they ended up...

amazing. i'm stunned.
