View Full Version : Agate Beach Sunset-Haida Gwai

This is a 24" X 30" oil on canvas. I have been working on it a for while now and have had enough. LOL. Haida Gwai has a powerful beauty that I have tried to capture and although this is my second attempt at this same painting, I am not satisfied that I have captured it yet. I will not stop until I get it...however it is time to move on to other things for now. C & C welcomed.

Maybe you aren't satisfied but you have produced a lovely work here - we are our worst critics most times (except for my wife who is merciless :D and is probably responsible for any good work I do). This has wonderful atmosphere and lighting, the sky is great. Where is Haida Gwai?
Very well done.

You may not have captured exactly what you were looking for, Marion but as Marty says - you have produced a beautiful painting. It looks so calm and serene - the sunset is superb and I'd love to be the one putting footprints in that pristine sand.
Very nice painting. Colors and composition are great. Yax

Thanks Marty, Alan, Velda and Yax for you kind comments. Although I decided I was "done" with this painting I am still working on it after all. I changed the stump in front...it looked like a cannon...lol...and the tree was irritating me badly so I took it out. Haven't redone that yet but I will. I guess this is one of those paintings that I will fight with until I feel okay inside...I can't seem to let this painting win. We may be fighting for a very long time. I will repost when I feel that what I have on the canvas reflects more of what I feel inside. Marty...Haida Gwai is a group of islands north of Vancouver Island off the British Columbia coast. Haida Gwai is the name the Haida people gave the islands....it is called The Queen Charlotte Islands on the map. It is 30 miles from the Alaskan panhandle and on a clear day you can see Alaska in the distance. It is very beautiful.

Looks great I can't see what you have in your head but this is looking very good to me....the sky is wonderful....the only flat spot I can see is the sand but not much you can do with that...

Marion, I think you have a lovely painting here. I'm glad you're going to keep working with it to bring it closer to what you want. I think your water is especially well done. I wasn't there to see this sunset nor have I ever been to HI. So, it's hard for me to judge the color of what you saw; but the sunset colors look a bit washed out to me. Sunsets seem to glow pink, orange, and yellow. I think there is just a bit too much white, which is bleaching out and cooling your warm colors. Also, sky colors are generally lighter than land colors; so the general rule is that the darks in the sky should be lighter than the darks on the land. I hope this helps. Please post your update too. I think this is a very interesting and beautiful painting. 'Looking forward to seeing what you do with it.

The original was good but the revised painting looks even better. I get a very relaxed calm feeling from this painting. I want to be there. Good work
